Reading HOmer's Iliad and The Hero With A Thousand by Joseph Campbell......or more like, trying to finish them both. Love Campbell's works, wish I could find his others. I read Iliad and The Odyssey back to back, I consider it one of my greatest reading achievements in terms of perseverance. I was thinking about reading the Aeneid after I finished the Iliad....because I studied The Odyssey in College during a class on Greek Mythology, so I am familiar with the adventures. I am more intrigued at this point about learning of Aeneas and his voyage to found Rome by way of a love affair in Carthage....tragic as that may be, I know.

Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Bloodlines - Karen Traviss This is mostly a soap opera of the family members of the Solos and Skywalkers navigating the blooming Galactic Alliance vs Corellia civil war, that intertwines with an unexpectedly touching drama of Boba Bett, all while the Jedi Knight Jacen Solo continues his tragic fall to the dark side. After a terrorist attack on Coruscant, Jacen allies with Coruscant Security to "do what must be done," so to speak, to bring order back to the galaxy. That, apparently, is to intern or expatriate all Correllian residents living on Coruscant. When I first read this I thought it was a ridiculously heavy-handed and implausible move for the a republic with Jedi advising the leaders; even if the Galactic Alliance wanted to do this, wouldn't they pass a law or send an announcement letting Correllians leave first? Then I remembered what happened after 9/11, and of course the internment of ethnic Japanese in the US during WWII, and realized, "Well... shit." At least this book finally acknowledges the uncomfortable truth that 13 year old Ben Skywalker has been turned into a child soldier. The Boba Fett I'm familiar with is largely a blank foil, barely fleshed out in the movies and comics. Here we meet the bounty hunter late in life as Mandalor, leader of the Mandalorian diaspora, extremely wealthy from his life as a bounty hunter, and recently diagnosed with some sort of clone degeneration that gives him a year to live. He is on a mission to find a cure, and maybe reconnect with his long lost family that has been trying to kill him. His blunt and ruthless outlook is a welcome contrast to all the angsty second-guessed decisions of the rest of the characters. Whereas they have immense misgivings and deep thoughts about... stuff... Boba moves through the story like a freight train. The book utilizes Boba Fett's blunt nature really well at the climax. For 350 pages the Skywalkers and Solos are in denial about Jacen's behavior. They rationalize his actions in terms of the law and the exigent circumstances, while asking themselves if he has gone too close to the dark side, and if he has stepped over the line? Even Jacen starts Force-looking into the past to see if he will make the same mistakes as Vader, because he most definitely DOES NOT want to become Vader. They all tap-dance around this, and then Fett in one communication talks to some security contacts on Coruscant, and they're like, "Yeah man, Jacen's walking around like the new Vader - it's crazy!" Boba's response, "Huh, I miss the Empire." So that was fun.

Iakus have you read THE MISTBORN® SAGA – THE WAX & WAYNE SERIES do you recommend them if you have? I'm not Iakus (obviously) but I read Mistborn a couple of years ago and I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Well of Ascension. Admittedly I stalled on the 2nd book after leaving it with a friend and I haven't been able to pick it back up again - but I do intend to get back to it. I did like the first book quite a bit. I'd describe it as easy & fun. The basics of the plot aren't groundbreaking, but I did like the take on how magic works in the universe. I'm pretty sure the Wax and Wayne ones build off of the first trilogy.

I am just about to finish the Trilogy and will read The Secret History which apparently gives extra info on the trilogy next but wa wanting to see if there were further novels after that based on the trilogy. The Wax & Wayne ones are from what I read 200+ years in the future so I am kind of interested in reading them but the 2nd and 3rd books of the mistborn trilogy have left me a bit unsure as they just weren't in my opinion as good as the first book. So not sure about W&W books. Have you read any of his other books you'd recommend regack ?

I have not, other than the continuation of the Wheel of Time books, but I was mostly reading those because I'd gotten so far in the series by that point that I felt I needed to actually finish. I was leaning towards the 2nd mistborn book not grabbing me as much as the first did, but I didn't want to pass any kind of judgement on it until I'd read it through.

I know that feeling. After he finished The Wheel of Time, I tried The Way of Kings. It was interesting, especially the ghost armour, but I just couldn’t get into it.

Iakus have you read THE MISTBORN® SAGA – THE WAX & WAYNE SERIES do you recommend them if you have? I have. They're good too, but different from the first trilogy. It's set several hundred years later and the characters of the trilogy have passed into legend. Tech is more late 19th/early 20th century as well. And it turns out you can do some interesting things when you combine guns and allomancy. Plus true mistborn are and feruchamists are unheard of anymore. Mistings and Ferrings are more common, as well as the rare-but-not-unheard of Twinborn: those born with an allomancy AND a feruchamy power. Apparently the ultimate plan was three trilogies: one set in a medieval era, one in a more modern setting, and one in a "sci fi" setting. The Wax and Wayne books are a "bonus" series which started out as a fun little aside that kinda mushroomed into a series all of its own. There's supposed to be four books in this series, but only three have been released so far.

Also, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that the Stormlight Archive was inspired at least in part by anime.

Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Tempest - Troy Denning Part of three of a nine part story, and they are still introducing characters *groan*. This is worse than comic books - bad guys from previous stories (which I haven't read) keep showing up to try to kill the good guys, they get defeated, and somehow escape to, I guess *shrug*, reappear in some other future story. The story revolves around a sequence of misdirections and misunderstandings, which I might refer to as a comedy of errors if so many people weren't getting killed. So maybe... a tragedy of errors? Han and Leia, firmly on the side of Correllia, are sent on a diplomatic mission to Hapan Consortium to negotiate an alliance, which would result in the Hapans leaving the Galactic Alliance. Palace intrigue quickly turns violent, and the turmoil sucks in the members of the Solo and Skywalker families to further strain their relationship. I'm getting a little tired of all these Jedi characters, with their supposedly special Force powers, messing with galactic civilization, so as the novel shifted perspectives to different characters I looked forward to continuing Han's story. But the novel plays him as constantly in over his head and playing catch-up to almost everyone else around him. I really miss the character who took charge of the evacuation and escape in Empire Strikes Back. Hope he shows up at some point. Jacen Solo continues his willing slide to the dark side, dragging his apprentice Ben Skywalker with him with tragic results. Jacen's judgment has become severely compromised; it's a little head snapping reading him first voice inward caution for some obviously ridiculous position, then throw that caution to the wind a few pages later to take that exact position due to completely incorrect deductions, which causes him to start jumping at shadows. It makes for a somewhat goofy story with such idioticy as it's plot twist that it is difficult to take seriously. It beggars the question as to why anyone would follow him, and this is only book 3.

Re-reading: There's a reason why this book won just about every fantasy book award. The plot is nice and twisty but the characters are simply amazing! This is a book for adults. There isn't any YA in sight. Some have commented that the pacing is a little slow, but for me that just means more time getting to know the characters.

So finished the Mistborn Trilogy, I definitely liked it but the middle book had some flat bits in it. I liked the story but the whole burning of metals as a super power thing always just felt a bit hard to imagine. I liked the majority of characters and thought Vin and Sazed were particularly well done and for some reason I loved OreSeur/TenSoon maybe because of Ten/Soon's "dogmatic" character . I am currently reading the Secret History ( Iakus) it's not what I expected so far and it has parts that have intrigued me and others that are just boring. Not sure whether to read the 200 years later novels (can't remember their names)or read the Hyperion books. Or maybe the Stormlight Archive books.

Half way through the Secret History at the moment, I'll reserve judgment till the end.

So finished The Secret History of The Mistborn Trilogy and was a bit disappointed. It highlighted an issue I had with the books that things are often just too simple for characters. Kelsier's theft of the orb was a perfect example.
I think I would have enjoyed it far more if it had been incorporated into the original trilogy.
Still wasn't bad just felt a bit shallow in terms of the story.

Pirate Latitudes - Michael Crichton A wildly improbable tale of cutthroat English privateer anti-heroes, along with some weirdly sexually liberated women, of Port Royal in Jamaica engaging in daring raids, ridiculous ship battles, encountering sea monsters, and native savage cannibals... did I mention casual witches? It is a quick read that reads less like a novel and more like a movie script with one dimensional cutout characters intended to be later fleshed out by a director. What about slaves? Reduced to basically a bunch of giggling servants in the background. I feel like Michael amassed a list of the most outlandish stories from the 1660s Caribbean, like rodent guts filled with explosive powder for a slow burning fuse, felon women shipped to the Caribbean to be wives of colonists, or 8 different ways to assassinate people, and just sort of crafted an insane yarn around them. I suspect this novel is going to affect my brain the way Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom did (loved that novelization by the way), and one day I'll assert some tidbit from the book (like "chilled monkey brains" from that movie) to someone knowledgeable about pirates and their response will be, "What? Where the hell did you get that idea from!!!???" Good fun though.

So late last night, I finished Book #4 of The Lightbringer series "The Bloor Mirror".....Now I have to wait until August 11th for the last book "The Burning White" to come out in Trade paperback (BOOOOO!!!)....So, to tide me over till then I am going back to The Night Angel Trilogy....I know, I know. I said I would finish The Iliad and Hero With A Thousand Faces...But I can't do academic reading right now. It's too heavy. Besides, The Night Angel are books that I enjoy no matter how many times I read them, and this will be my fifth time through. I know how it ends, the last scene of the last book....and I still bawl every time. But there's so much I enjoy discovering about these books and really enjoy the characters; For those who have read it, the character of Momma K is my favourite. I like Momma K because she plays the dual role so well; owner of a brothel by day, underworld mafia leader by night. And her past is quite tragic yet it has helped inform how she sees the world around her and the people in it.
What about you? Who is/are your favourite character(s) in The Night Angel trilogy and why?
