Have you read his Quatermain adventures ? How does this one stack against those ? I have not read any of those, I have only read this one book so far but I am on another Haggard book, his 1st one titled 'Dawn' and it is good so far.
After Dawn I will get to King Solomons Mine.
Excellent choices. If I may recommend, check out "Allan's Wife" after you get through "King Solomons Mine". It is, in my humble opinion, the best Allan Quatermain adventure. Beautiful stuff !

Feeling in the mood for something different, so.. Does anyone know if "A Stranger in A Strange Land" is any good? My god I read the Heinlein books so long ago (38 years ) and enjoyed all of them that I read but all I have left in terms of memories is that I enjoyed all of them and that they engendered my love of Sci-Fi. Sorry can't be more specific than that.

My understanding is Stranger in a Strange land is like the exact opposite of Starship Troopers thematically.

Absolutely second "The Forever War" it is great and is rated by some as the number 1 Sci-Fi book, I think I have posted about it in this thread before.

It's a good novel. However, I would interject that it came in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and that is the lens through which it was written and the lens through which it has been praised by the media elite.

Rereading: What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry. Once the dust settles, these four find themselves faced with an impossible choice: pretend to be adventurers undertaking a task of near-certain death or see their town and loved ones destroyed. Armed only with salvaged equipment, second-hand knowledge, and a secret that could get them killed, it will take all manner of miracles if they hope to pull off their charade. And even if they succeed, the deadliest part of their journey may well be what awaits them at its end.

I just finished this book: It was the authors first book and was pretty good overall, sort of standard Victorian novel, love, betrayal, villains. Good story, a lot of good characters, very good heroine. Only one character I really did not care for that was the male lead, more or less an entitled selfish dick who had virtually every thing go his way through the book and he still was a big whiner. That aside good book and worth the read. Not sure what I should read next, another book by Haggard or a sci fi novel. Will have to think about it.

URK! You sure pay the price for new releases. I wanted to read the last book of a series by John Scalzi and the last book was released just in April. Well I bought the kindle version at what seems like a fat price of about $15.

So true!
I've mostly switched to reading through Kindle Unlimited. For less than the price of a new ebook, you can read up to ten books at a time. There's a lot of trash but I read a lot so it's well worth swifting through the rubbish.
Besides, I'm getting older and these new authors aren't anything like the authors of days gone by. Back then books were real books and authors were real authors. They had thesauri and knew how to use 'em. Unlike the writers of today. When our books fell on our foot back in the day, we felt real pain! And the paper cuts were deeper and hurt more because the paper was soaked in lemon juice. But that's the we liked it!
Bah!

Well I bought the kindle version at what seems like a fat price of about $15. Yeah I changed to the Kindle because books in Australia are obscenely priced, a normal paperback even a year after release can set you back $25-00 and on Kindle I can get most stuff for free due to Kindle unlimited or buy a whole series for $2-99. Was horrified when i wanted the latest in a series I was reading and it was $12-99!!!!! But still better than a new release paperback here, it'd anywhere from $35 and upwards.

I shouldn't complain too much, as to offset the high price of the sci fi books i buy I get the complete works of 19th century authors i read for like 3 bucks so it evens out i suppose.
'Back in the day' I do remember paperbacks being like $3.50 for new ones. but then again I'm old.

So I am going to have a break and have started a series I downloaded for free a while ago called: Aliens, Robots and The Apocalypse by Jasper T Scott. I couldn't stop reading it even though it is not the greatest writing I have read AND some of the characters are REALLY stupid (in terms of their actions) but the story is pretty engaging. I am really interested to see where it goes. So just finished the above 5 books, I thought they were a series but the were 5 separate stories and they were a conundrum as I found them frustrating yet enjoyable and hard to stop reading. Essentially all them are very different stories and situations that are based on the main characters making stupid decisions but somehow still achieving a said goal. Some of the characters are like able and some aren't but forging the path of sheer stupidity seems to be the one common thread. Anyway they cost me nothing and as I said they were enjoyable and each I wanted to see how it ended. If you are after a shallow narrative that is easy and enjoyable to read then this may see you through.

Finished this one: What a fucking brilliant book. This thing should be mandatory reading not just for people in the US but all over the world. Truly outstanding. I'll do my best to get Call of the Wild if I can and obviously read more from Jack London. Now I'm starting: I have no idea what a "Connecticut Yankee" is like but Mark Twain did write Tom Sawyer's Adventures... which is probably my favorite novel of all time. Thus I will give this cooky weird thing a try and see how it goes. Wish me luck.

I believe I read White Fang as a kid in German. Had no idea it was so famous a novel at the time. I have only vague memories of the story but I know I really liked it. I think I also watched one of the movie adaptations.
I'm working my way through the long ass Kushiel novels... Very much a girl power fantasy to a ridiculous degree. A tale about how a glorified whore saves an entire country and becoming famous. A male friend recommended it, saying the third book is when it gets really good. I was told the first two were kind of a slog and the frequent sex scenes silly but the characters are great and it'll be worth it. Considering that the first novel is 900+ pages and the second 700+ and I'm a slow reader, it took me months, lol.
SM sex fetish? Check. Ridiculously charming main character? Check. Cheesy but sweet love story? Check. Repetitive plot structure? Check.
The characters really grow on you though and they're indeed the best aspect of this series. There's a lot of feel good Mass Effect-like heroism. Friends are true friends here like it's the case with all good sagas. And it's refreshing that a modern series by a female writer doesn't go for toxic masculinity tropes. Plenty of truly noble male characters. And the main antagonist is female. The first two novels can indeed be a bit of a slog and I had to get used to the writing style which I first found abhorrently bad, lol. But there was plenty to like about the character drama. And I'm looking forward to the good novels, haha.

Very much a girl power fantasy to a ridiculous degree. A tale about how a glorified whore saves an entire country and becoming famous. For real though!^^ The main character is sold as a child into servitude of one of the Houses that are basically themed brothels. They are taught the art of pleasing patrons in the most sensual way. Rich people buy their services. A servant can buy their freedom through patron gifts. Basically somebody has to pay the Houses a lot of money for losing one of their assets. The main character is bought from her House as a child alread by a rich individual who trains her and a boy as spies, honey traps really. This ties into the main plot of a conspiracy to overthrow the current ruler of their country in a fictional alternate history of Europe where the people of fictional France are literal descendants of angels and therefore the most beautiful and desired. I know, it sounds SO bad, lol. I would never have picked it up if I wasn't told it's better than it sounds. Like I said, the characters grow on you. It's actually quite a moving tale of love and friendship and betrayal. It's very cheesy at times but I appreciate some cheese once in a while in a sea of nihilistic gloom and doom that's so popular these days.
