I just finished reading 'No one's home' from D.M. Pulley.
It's a nice new take on the haunted house story, that reminds me a bit of the Hill House series on Netflix - not that it copies Hill House, it's just similar in atmosphere. It's basically the story of different inhabitants of a so called 'murder house'. The center is the last family, that moved to the old Rawling mansion, the Spielmans. The 16 year old son, Hunter, gets curious, because he saw and heard things in the house, he can't explain. So he starts digging in the history of the house and as he progress, you learn the stories of some of the other inhabitants. I really can recommend this book, it is a really great read. I didn't have that high expectations, I just thought it would be the typical haunted house story, but it is ...different, in a refreshing way.

There are a few good historic novel authors of earlier times. You may have come across some of them already, but I'm going to suggest a few names. Alan Scholefield. South African writer, wrote stories from early SA history. You need to watch out because he also wrote crime novels in late years. What you want is the old version who wrote historical novels in the '60s and '70s. The books are a bit more 'serious' and cruel novels than Quartermain, so it's not the same. Some titles: 'Wild Dog Running' South Africa 'Great Elephant' South Africa 'Eagles of Malice' South Africa 'The Stone Flower' South Africa Those South African novels are the ones I really liked when I was young and binge-read Scholefield. Particularly 'Wild Dog Running'. I was lucky because our local library had them. They are not easy to find. Used on internet mail order is your option (or possibly a big library). In fact, I think I'm going to make an effort to get those four myself. They're not really for people who want rosy endings though. More bittersweet, with a slight emphasis on bitter, perhaps. 'The Lost Giants' The American West <- Seem to remember I was bored by this, but I was young and only wanted more South Africa. 'Fire in the Ice' WW1 in Russia <- haven't read 'The Alpha Raid' WW2 Africa Did read, but remember nothing. 'The Hammer of God' Kinda recognize the title, so probably read it, remembers nothing.'Loyalties' WW2 <- haven't read
Thanks I have written those down. First little search and did not find them on amazon kindle but i will have to look more. More than 30 books by Alan Scholefield have now been released by Kindle. I was going to hunt down some of them from used books stores, but now I don't need that hazzle. I bought 'Wild Dog Running', 'Great Elephant', 'Eagles of malice' and 'View of Vultures'. I read these as basically a kid. It'll be interesting to catch up and see them again. Also, Donald E Westlake is also now on Kindle, +100 books. Unfortunately, they're rather expensive. Even more so if you consider the $/page. I can get a new 1000 page Fantasy brick, - in printed paper, for what they want for these short reads in electronic form. Pity, because the Dortmunder and Parker series are fun, and I have actually only read a few of them. On a hunch, I checked for Kenneth Roberts, and yep, they too are available now. High prices too. Bought some classics I've read as young, and some that are new too me.

Just started a new Glen Cook book. After reading the Black Company and it being my absolute favorite book series I have high hopes for this one. And I REALLY need a break from the Stormlight books or I'll go nuts. I don't know what it is with Glen Cook, with all his books I'm immediately pulled into his worlds, I don't experience this with any other authors work. And boy, I have read a ton of books in the past 4 years.

Just finished it. This is the second of two volumes. I read them straight through, which was a mistake in retrospect. They are well written and very thorough, but extremely depressing. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to understand more about Hitler, but I am never reading them again. It's like reading Tuchman's 'the Guns of August' in that regard or watching 'Schindler's List'. Done it, great work, but never doing it again.

I couldn't stand this and gave up on it: It's written as an escapist fantasy for old geriatrics. It was outright cringy at times.

I'm currently reading Tales from the Folly by Ben Aaronovitch. I'm so glad, the book finally arrived. It's a collection of short stories set in the Rivers of London universe and of course narrated as always by the one and only Peter Grant. Peter is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite book heroes, together with his mentor Nightingale.

It was also one of the inspirations for Fallout games. A classic. "Eat! Eat! Eat!" Ah yes, now I understand Read the whole book and in the end, I actually liked it. First it was a bit slow to start but when it actually started we jumped a lot forward in time.. Now I understand the Fallout connections. Though not ghouls who leave... Great stuff and I'm happy I read it. Now to something else, but what, theres so much! Friend suggested The Iron Tactician by Reynold Alistair. I might go with that.

For the April book discussion: It’s America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war—and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award–winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake.

I'm reading book 4 of the Gower Street Detective series by M.R.C. Kasasian: The Secret of Gaslight Lane.
I really love this series. It's centered around Sidney Grice, detective and misanthrope and his ward March Middleton. March is the narrator of the books (a bit like Watson in the Sherlock Holmes novels). She is a compassionate, nice person, who likes to smoke and drink the occasional gin. Together, they are a great and very hilarious team. While the tone of the books is often light, there are some very dark topics sometimes.

I'm currently binge-reading C S Forester's novels about Hornblower.
I read most of them as very young, a kid I suppose, and as well as figuring they might be fun to revisit, I kinda figured there were some of them I had not read.
Going at it in Hornblower's chronical order, I've read 'Midshipman Hornblower' and 'Lieutenant Hornblower', and am now reading 'Hornblower and Hotspur'.
And well, I remembered some of of Midshipman... and I think I may have to started to read it once upon a time, but never finished it. I seem to recognize some things in Lieutenant... but I don't think I ever read it. I read Nordhoff & Hall's Biography of Lord Hornblower much later, and I think I got those details from that. And sofar, I don't remember anything at all in Hotspur, so I don't think I've read that either.
Absolutely fantastic stuff though. Very awesome. And to think that this was written in the age of the typewriter and fountain pen.

Finally finished The Dresden Files book 12 "Changes" after a long hiatus. It was a good read, the teasing of something happening between Murphy and Harry is getting painful and I wish Murphy would take up the damn sword.
Will read "aftermath" short story next then on to book 13 Ghost Story
