I read quite a lot, mostly crime novels. At the moment, I'm reading Alice by Christina Henry. It's a very dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

Just started book 14 of The Empire of Bones series by Terry Mixon "Gunboat Diplomacy". It is light miltary sci-fi which I would have probably given up on around book 8 but I get it for .99 cents on Kindle Unlimited and I have just wanted to see how it ended. That pretty much happened with the main over arching plot in book 13 but there were some new twists and story elements added in book 13 so I am keen to see how they play out but I have definitely grown tired of the main characters. There are also just too many characters TBH. Anyway started it last night and has been OK for the first 4 chapters if a bit over dramatic in terms of one characters health state.

Catching up on Detective Conan manga; 77 to 78. I'm forced to switch over to the English version as it has become difficult to acquire the Chinese version. The manga is always lagging behind the anime. I estimate as much as a 100 eps or more behind because I've already watched the cases (a few years ago) that is now currently printed in the books. Still, it's a good read except that as usual, the English translations tend not to capture the humour and at times, common proverbs / jokes are not correct. I also find it strange that English names are given to the main cast but the rest retain their Japanese names. Why not have everyone retain their Japanese names? Kudo Shinichi became Jimmy Kudo. ugh.

I started the second book of Christina Henrys Alice series. But I must say, it is not as good as the first one and I probably will stop after this one. For one, there is too much romance in it now and I really hate romance. Then the story is a bit lacking atm. The first book highlights were the unique characters. Book two so far is missing that - yes, you have giants and evil witches, but that is standard fantasy stuff, nothing special.
I hope, the story picks up and the romance stuff is going to take a backseat or else, I might not even finish book 2.

Just about finished with book 2 of Joe Abercrombie's new Age of Madness trilogy ( The Trouble with Peace). Book 3 ( The Wisdom of Crowds) doesn't come out til next week, so I'm going to get the last First Law standalone, Sharp Ends (a collection of short stories in the First Law world) to tide me over until then. After that, I'll have to find a new series/book, which is always a bugger.

So after finishing book fourteen of The Empire of Bones which I enjoyed more than I probably should have given the non-appearance of some of the better main characters who strangely were all male. The author obviously decided that this would be a nearly 100% female dominated cast with a few token males as partners or without whom the ever increasingly ridiculous space magic cannot be understood thanks to Carl. Anyway this is not a criticism of the female majority or their actual characters, it just seemed a little contrite and unnecessary in a series of books that has been well balanced in it's representation of males and females in lead and diverse roles often breaking stereotypical paradigms of military representation in roles. The use of a not greatly written or strong character in a main role that she seemed ill suited to surprisingly worked and carried a lot of the book but some of the other obvious attempts to diversify different relationships and relationship balance came across to me at least as tokenism and devalued the other member of the relationship or a long standing characters standing and abilities. Anyway long story short the book was quite enjoyable but I hope the next book also includes the other half of the main duo/story and that it wont flip and just be about Jarrod and his fleet. I wish the author would actually take the time to write longer more solid novels rather than what have started to be large Novellas. Then moved on to series called Breaker Marine, liked the main character so slogged through the first book which was quite short then got a third of the way through the second and gave up. Story was a rehash of many others and just boring TBH. So given the new movie version of Dune is being released in late October if I am correct I decided to re-read Dune which i have not read for over decade and maybe two. The above image is the cover of the hard copy book I was given when I was about 18/19 I think. I bought the first trilogy this time on Kindle, not sure what happened to my collection of Dune books of which I had nearly all. I am guessing I had to sell them at some stage. It was great to even shortly step back into this series last night, it brought back much nostalgia and compared to what I have read since Hyperion etc. the quality was immediately evident. Can't wait to sink some more time into it over the next few weeks.

I have many books in line to read but for some reason in the evening I just browse daily news and then sleep. I have to get back to reading I had this exact problem some years ago. What did it for me was light reading: I started with Agatha Christie's Poirot short stories and moved on to novels after that. I um.. have an extensive collection of Christie's works.

For more than fifty years, the Terran Republic and the Terran League have been killing one another. The death toll has climbed ever higher, year after year, with no end in sight. But the members of the Five Hundred, the social elite of the Republic’s Heart Worlds, don’t care.
Rear Admiral Terrence Murphy is a Heart Worlder. His family is part of the Five Hundred. His wife is the daughter of one of the Five Hundred’s wealthiest, most powerful industrialists. His sons and his daughter can easily avoid military service, and political power is his for the taking. There is no end to how high he can rise in the Republic’s power structure.
All he has to do is successfully complete a risk-free military “governorship” in the backwater Fringe System of New Dublin without rocking the boat. But the people sending him to New Dublin have miscalculated, because Terrence Murphy is a man who believes in honor. Who believes in duty—in common decency and responsibility. Who believes there are dark and dangerous secrets behind the façade of what “everyone knows.”
Terrence Murphy intends to meet those responsibilities, to unearth those secrets, and he doesn’t much care what the Five Hundred want. He intends to put a stop to the killing.
Terrence Murphy is coming for whoever has orchestrated fifty-six years of bloodshed and slaughter, and Hell itself is coming with him.I had not realized when I got this book that it's a prequel to Weber's "In Fury Born". I read that years ago when it was just "The Path of the Fury" Here's hoping Fox can reign in Weber's propensity for going on and on and ON over minutia and politicking...

Continuing my theme of reading books from famous authors rated highly I just finished this book. Not my cup of tea at all, for as much rep it gets. Story was only okay at best. Pacing was lousy and Conrads writing style was enough to give a woodpecker a head ache. I had bought the paper back of this years ago and it sat on my shelf for years. I finally read it via kindle. I have his most famous novel 'Heart of Darkness' on the kindle as well and I'll read that at some point but not until I take a break from this kind of novel.

I "finished" my binge of Hornblower some weeks ago. I have one book left. I know it's about his final command, which was as fleet admiral commanding a serious fleet in some conflict in the Orient, where he contracts a serious illness that puts an end to his career. But I haven't found that book yet.
Reflecting back on the novels, I think that even if the early books, about HMS Lydia's voyage and HMS Sutherland's epic last stand, are the famous ones, the later books are better written. He didn't write them in chronological order, so by later, I mean those about his younger years, before he was a Captain.
It surprised me that I enjoyed the reading despite that I actually didn't really like the protagonist much, Hornblower. He's a murderous, ruthless bastard, that will stop at nothing to satisfy his cravings for honor and fame. On the positive side is his infinite sense of duty. For that, he will even sacrifice himself and even his precious honor. He's not really brave, because the only thing he's afraid of is that somebody would suspect him to be a coward. So he always throws himself into action with reckless abandon.
Now I'm not saying you can't like a flawed protagonist. On the contrary. It's easier (and normal, I'd say) to dislike a 'perfect' character. But somewhere there, between when he sacrifices the crew of Sutherland in a senseless bloodbath to destroy a Spanish squadron where every ship is bigger than Sutherland, and he, through selfish stupidity, fails his french friends who saved him during his captivity, I took on a measure of dislike for Horatio Hornblower. But he has a lovely horse faced wife (Wellington's sister) that he doesn't deserve. At least one endearing trait is that he understands that he doesn't deserve her.
- But I still enjoyed the books. Very much even. In many ways you have to understand Hornblower as a person of his era. He spent more than 20 years fighting the Napoleonian wars at sea. And war is ruthless, and makes ruthless demands. I think CS Forester did a dam good job.
Just like Samuel Shellabarger's and Kenneth Roberts' historical novels, CS Forester is well worth reading.

Winter of the World; by Ken Follett.
It is book 2 of a trilogy covering the 20th century. Book 1 dealt with WW1 through the POV of a dozen or so characters from around the world. Book 2 is WW2 and deals with a number of those characters and their children. Both were slow to get in to, but I loved Pillars of the Earth when I was younger, so I stuck with them. Heavy on political and historical exposition, but good at not making the ‘bad guys’ ridiculous moustache twirlers.
