I finished reading "The Flat Share" by Beth O`Leary. "Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash. Their friends think they’re crazy, but it’s the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy’s at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time. But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven’t met yet, they’re about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window…" I`m currently reading "The Tattoo Thief" by Alison Belsham. "When Brighton tattoo artist Marni Mullins discovers a flayed body, newly-promoted DI Francis Sullivan needs her help. There's a serial killer at large, slicing tattoos from his victims' bodies while they're still alive. Marni knows the tattooing world like the back of her hand, but has her own reasons to distrust the police. So when she identifies the killer's next target, will she tell Sullivan or go after the Tattoo Thief alone?"

Recently started this series. Fun popcorn read. Ex-soldiers turned mercenaries travel through time Stargate-style for fun and profit. And stumble on an evil conspiracy. The Rangers have returned from the prehistoric past to find themselves in an even more dangerous time---the present.
Being on the run takes money. On the run from the richest man in the world takes millions.
From a forgotten cave in the Nevada desert to the pirate-infested seas of the ancient world, the Rangers hunt for treasure lost to time. The travelers to the past find once again that history is not what it seems and the future is always in doubt.
Blood Red Tide was previously published as part of One Helluva Bad Time

If you haven't read Cordwainer Smith, then you need to. I have read his "Rediscovery of Man" which was great. "Cordwainer Smith was one of the original visionaries to think of humanity in terms of thousands of years in the future, spread out across the universe. This brilliant collection, often cited as the first of its kind, explores fundamental questions about ourselves and our treatment of the universe (and other beings) around us and ultimately what it means to be human."

Fourteen outstanding authors. Fourteen extraordinary stories. One bestselling universe.
It’s the Twenty-Second Century. The galaxy has opened up to humanity as a hyperactive beehive of stargates and new technologies, and we suddenly find ourselves in a vast playground of different races, environments, and cultures. There’s just one catch: we are pretty much at the bottom of the food chain.
Enter the Four Horsemen universe, where only a willingness to fight and die for money separates Humans from the majority of the other races. Enter a galaxy not only of mercenaries, but also of Peacemakers, bounty hunters, and even a strung out junkie in the way of a hired assassin.
Edited by bestselling authors and universe creators Mark Wandrey and Chris Kennedy, “A Fistful of Credits” includes all-new stories in the Four Horsemen universe by a variety of bestselling authors—and some you may not have heard of…yet. The fourteen authors take on various aspects of the universe, giving you additional insight into a galaxy that isn’t at war…but definitely isn’t at peace. There’s only one thing for sure—anything’s possible for a fistful of credits!
Inside you’ll find: Foreword by Dr. Charles E. Gannon "The Last Alpha" by Mark Wandrey "Breach of Contract" by Terry Mixon "Paint the Sky" by Jason Cordova "Surf and Turf" by Jon R. Osborne "Stand on It" by Kevin Ikenberry "Lost and Found" by Jon Del Arroz "Gilded Cage" by Kacey Ezell "Legends" by Christopher Woods "With the Eagles" by Doug Dandridge "Dead or Alive" by Paul Corcoran "Hide and Seek" by Christopher Nuttall "Information Overload" by Charity Ayres "Enough" by Chris Kennedy "CASPer's Ghost" by Brad R. Torgersen

Finished reading "The Silence of the Girls", an historical fiction by Pat Barker. "Here is the story of the Iliad as we've never heard it before: in the words of Briseis, Trojan queen and captive of Achilles. Given only a few words in Homer's epic and largely erased by history, she is nonetheless a pivotal figure in the Trojan War. In these pages she comes fully to life: wry, watchful, forging connections among her fellow female prisoners even as she is caught between Greece's two most powerful warriors. Her story pulls back the veil on the thousands of women who lived behind the scenes of the Greek army camp--concubines, nurses, prostitutes, the women who lay out the dead--as gods and mortals spar, and as a legendary war hurtles toward its inevitable conclusion. Brilliantly written, filled with moments of terror and beauty, The Silence of the Girls gives voice to an extraordinary woman--and makes an ancient story new again." I`m currently reading "Her Last Breath", a crime thriller by Alison Belsham. "When a young woman is attacked and left fighting to survive in hospital, the police are pulled into a race against time to save her life. But just 24 hours later, she dies and a deadly tattoo is discovered on her body. And when another young woman disappears, Detective Francis Sullivan and his team fear a serial killer walks the streets of Brighton. His team identify a suspect, Alex Mullins, son of Francis's lover, Marni. Can Francis forget their shared past and save the next victim before it is too late?"

Not actually reading but I've found Andromeda Strain audiobook on YouTube. I've read it long time ago when I was a kid and the book I had was all torn up so I started reading from chapter 5 or so and didn't have a couple of last pages. Finally got to experience the whole story. Though I don't think it works that well in audio format because it contains a lot of government documents and computer program printouts so the narrator had to spell out stuff like "Top Secret, authorized personnel only, Project So and So, Identification number five five five three six dash alfa bravo dash nine zero six dash you get what im saying"

So you started Assassins Apprentice? Some of my favourite books and I have liked pretty much all Robin Hobbs books. Started "Best Served Cold" by Joe Abercrombie last night man did that get off to a great start!!!!! Thanks for prompting me to read the stand alone books, if the first 10% of this book is any indication they are going to be pretty good. yeah Best Served Cold is lots of fun. Sort of like a grimdark Oceans Eleven or something. The other standalones are also super enjoyable, and they're all a bit different (which just adds to the appeal). So finished "Best Served Cold" struggled towards the end it just kept going and going and going but was good. Have started "Heroes" and am struggling to keep up with all the characters even though some of them are not new, just the story itself is not grabbing me. The most interesting character for me is Rinfree and she doesn't make much of an appearance very often. I am waiting for Bremer dan Gorst to finally do something other than fantasise about Rinfree and feel sorry for himself. q5tyhj please tell me Red Country is the best of them!!!!!

Heroes was probably my least favorite of the standalones, which is sort of weird because the impression I got from e.g. the First Law reddit was that Heroes was a fan favorite. I guess it depends on how much you love detailed descriptions of battles and action sequences, because holy smokes is there a lot of that in Heroes. The ending was pretty satisfying though. And yeah, actually, Red Country was my favorite of the standalones.

On book 2 (Royal Assassin) of the Farseer trilogy now. Am really enjoying this series, and its hard to explain why. Just well-written classic fantasy I guess.
I hope the rest of the books are as good, because there sure are a lot of them (5 trilogies all set in the same world, iirc).

I hope the rest of the books are as good, because there sure are a lot of them (5 trilogies all set in the same world, iirc). It's simply written with well written characters in for the most part an unremarkable world and focuses on a story that is slightly different and yet engaging for how similar it is to real life. The magic when it happens is impressive for it's limited use and it's subtlety. IMO the first trilogy sets a high bar and the others never quite reach it and are a bit more hit and miss in quality. It will really depend a lot on how invested intrigued you are in Fitz and the Fool's story I think. Liveship Traders I thought was the weakest of the series but I know a lot of people really liked it.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds of Best Served Cold then I just wanted them to get on with it and I was a bit disappointed with how certain relationships turned out. Heroes battle details etc. would not be so tedious if it was not quite so obvious what was going to happen and how Jalenhorm's character was made out to be so completely incompetent, simply by virtue of being promoted too far, which can happen. However I remember him being a very loyal and competent Sargeant in the earlier books but maybe I am wrong. There just also seems to be little depth to some of the characters but that may just be in comparison to the first trilogy and even best served cold.

Still, I enjoyed it, probably my 2nd favorite of the standalones, after Red Country.

Just finished this book, book two of a trilogy. Really like the series and book two was excellent except for my same criticism I had of book one. Not a clearly defined end of book two. This is not really a trilogy as much as a long 1100 page book split into three. On to the last book of the series!

This week i have been reading four books from the Sebastian Bergman series, a swedish crime/thriller series by Hjorth & Rosenfeldt. I read "The Silent girl", "The Punishment of the Ignorant" and "Consent Lies" and i`m currently reading "Hidden Truths" (which is the seventh and latest book they wrote).

Is anyone familiar with the "Iron Druid Chronicles" by Kevin Hearn? If wo, what did you think of them? Read the first book on a recommendation from a friend. It was alright, I guess. But the main character is kind of an a-hole, imo. I liked his sapient wolfhound companion better.

In my mind...there is no sequel. She was "the last". Besides, that movie was great. Scared the piss outta me as a little kid in more ways than one....But Alan Arkin, Angela Lansbury, Mia Farrow, Rene Auberjonois, Jeff Bridges and CHristopher Lee.....what more can I say? PS: The Red Bull terrified me.

The future is over.
Civilization on Earth has collapsed. Oligarchs have established a new order in manmade space colonies at the Earth-Moon LaGrange points.
A group of powerful colonies form the Systems Overterrestrial Coalition to re-civilize the earth, but grounders view the colonists as hostile meddlers. The Coalition counters the rising violence with giant manned robots called combat frames.
The independent L3 colonies denounce the war on Earth. In response, Coalition Security Director Sanzen takes L3 leader Josef Friedlander's wife and daughter hostage. Amid the tense standoff, Friedlander's son Sieg launches an unsanctioned rescue mission to L1's Byzantium colony.Just started it, reads very much like an anime in novel form.

Something a little lighter and more humorous. Reminds me of Dave Barry at times: There's no wrong way to be a woman. There are countless wrong ways to be a man.
James Breakwell should know. He's tried just about all of them. Journalism. Pig ownership. Felony lawn gnome theft. Whatever masculinity is supposed to be, this can't be it. But can you really fail at something no one can quite define? Apparently.
Now, in a series of funny, sharply observed, and occasionally poignant essays, everyone's favorite internet-famous father of four daughters lays down a lifetime of lessons in what it means to be a man. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll wonder what really happened to those creepy lawn gnomes on that deserted country road. (Spoiler alert: They're right behind you.)
If you ever wanted to know how to fail at altruism, dodge the priesthood, and stumble your way into unexpected wisdom, this book is for you.
