Have you finished Heroes then? From what I remember, the ending was a little bit of a curveball. And I agree that Best Served Cold's ending was a little disappointing. Still, I enjoyed it, probably my 2nd favorite of the standalones, after Red Country. No am about 50% through Heroes I think but have not had time to read the last few days due to RL stuff but in general since about halfway through Best Served Cold I have hit a bit of a wall and lost momentum. So finally finished Heroes book two in The Leveller trilogy of stand alone novels that fill the gap between the First Law Trilogy and whatever the next one is. Man what a a slog Heroes was, TBH I have not been feeling 100% the past couple of weeks but it was like when you had to study at Uni or at School and you'd find excuses not to do it. My main complaint was it just went on too long. I got more enjoyment out of the last 10% than the first 90% and there were so many characters even by the end I kept having to think, now who are you again. I hated that one particular character died and one lived it just ran contrary to the grain an the reason why I either missed or was not overly explained (Calder/Black Down and what was Caul Shivers Motivation?) And poor Gorst really cannot wait to see where the story takes his character.
I was sad with Craw's ending in the book, I hope it is elaborated on a bit more in the next book. For all the effort put into his character the author could have least given him a slightly better send off. Anyway there was lots of stuff that will add to the main story that I am not unhappy for reading it. Next on to Red Country the third of the trilogy.

Just finished book three of the Uplift War trilogy by David Brin. Overall I would give it a 'good' rating and worth reading as a review if anyone is looking for a sci fi series. The Good: Interesting and believable overall premise, good alien races for the most part, mostly (not all) good characterization, mostly easy to read style. The Bad: The odd time gets too caught up in the science of things. A character or two whom as one of the protagonists I was supposed to like but in reality they were selfish asses. Biggest complaint is that in all of his books he would have at least one plot line he would develop and nurture and even have some foreshadowing and then unceremoniously dump it with a snap of the fingers or hand wave. As I stated in a previous review of one of his books, it kind of smacked of having to cut content due to length and just doing it in a poor fashion. Overall though worth the read. I am going to switch genres again for a couple of spy novels then will search from some more sci fi perhaps.

So well into the third book (Red Country) of the three books within The Great Leveller side novels From the First Law Books by Joe Abercrombie. I think I moaned above about the trial that the second book (The Heroes) was but the third is a return to his usual great writing. Loving the story, the characters (and specifically the return of some older characters) the setting and didn't expect "Western" in a fantasy book. Already dreading that the book may be setting up the death of some of the characters, one in particular with 9 fingers. Anyway as I said it has been hard to put down and as I have been pretty much bed/sofa bound due to illness that has been great.

The cover looks intriguing???? Clicking on the image will take you to the book at Amazon. I'm enjoying it so far. There's a body in the first chapter, which is always a good thing in a mystery. I think I know who the killer is and I'm about one third through with the book, but here's hoping it's someone else!

After a ten-year hiatus, British academic Andrew Hale is abruptly called back into the Great Game by a terse, cryptic telephone message. Born to "the trade" and recruited at the age of seven by a most secret Secret Service, Hale, in 1963, is forced to confront again the nightmare that has haunted his adult life: a lethal unfinished operation code-named Declare.
Two decades earlier, as a young double agent infiltrating the Soviet spy network in Nazi-occupied Paris, Hale first encountered the incomprehensible rhythms of an invisible world. And from that moment on nothing was ever safe and knowable again. There also, his life became eternally linked with two others' lives that would recurrently intersect his at its most dangerous junctures: his "comrade operative," the fiery and beautiful Communist agent Elena Teresa Ceniza-Bendiga, the object of Hale's undying love, and Kim Philby, the mysterious traitor to the British cause...and perhaps to all humanity. Together they form an unlikely trimuvirate with one shared destiny: Declare.
But the Great Game is greater and far more terrible than Andrew Hale ever imagined. There is another, larger war raging unseen all around him, a cataclysmic secret conflict masked by a "Cold War" of national ideologies. And it is drawing Hale, Elena, and Philby inexorably toward world-shattering consequences on a Biblical mountain in the Middle East...and to a hideous feast of broken minds, destroyed lives, and devoured souls.

... didn't expect "Western" in a fantasy book. Yeah I enjoyed that part of it. And the next trilogy (Age of Madness) is fun in a similar way, in that its set during what is the First Law equivalent of industrialization- another setting that is highly atypical for many fantasy series, but (imo) works really well.

There's a whole fantasy/horror subgenre called "Weird West" Oh I know, I just didn't expect it 6 books in to a series that never really hinted at it prior to that. Read "The Amtrak Wars" about 25 - 30 years ago and it was a bit of a western, Sci Fi and Fantasy mash up that I really enjoyed. Keep wanting to read the books again but they have just continued to go up and up in price and cannot justify it.

For more than a century, Winged Hussars has been the richest of Earth's mercenary companies, as well as the only one to specialize in space warfare. Led by Alexis Cromwell, they have carved out a reputation in the galaxy for being dependable, unflappable, and lethally efficient. Until people began shooting at them everywhere they went.Rick Culper left Earth in the hopes of finding a job as a merc. A natural at fighting in the armed suits known as CASPers, he finally caught on with one of the premier Four Horsemen companies, but it’s with the Winged Hussars, and the company's prospects are beginning to look bleak. Traps have been laid throughout a number of systems, and Commander Alexis Cromwell and her flagship, Pegasus, will be hard-pressed to make it back to their secret base. Even with Rick's help, the situation is much worse than anyone in the Hussars could have imagined. The Four Horsemen are being hunted, and the Hussars' future is dark. But there’s one thing Alexis’ enemies didn’t count on—Alexis Cromwell is nobody’s prey.

I just finished this book. (spy novel) Overall I enjoyed it but it really was not a stand alone novel. You really needed to read a number of previous novels to get the gist of things as it basically went over a number of character and scenarios from previous books. Ending as not too clear but that is a bit of the authors style.

" Water Margin" really impressive chinese mustread (for chinese) classic from 1300 AD. Real fun while big and repetitive: banquets, adventures, injustice, binge drinking, fights and massacre in every pages Dont read wiki's sumarry btw, would be loosing half the fun. I m pissed i did as i m in the middle of it after 900 pages. Edit: And if you dive into it, you should write one or 2 sentences for each main Characters you read about for more than few chapters. I didnt, and i lost track of few of them i loved.
selfquoting cause i started the second opus last week. Still fresh and good ! Just finished a love affaire side story which was fun and ended up with lot of blood not many of them along the read, but a nice change of pace between fights and binge drinkings

Liveship Traders I thought was OK, a cameo by an important Farseer trilogy character was a highlight for me but otherwise I just didn't get very engaged. The highlight I think was the ships themselves.

Personally i quite enjoyed The Tawny man trilogy but i didn`t like The Fitz and the Fool at all, mostly because of the ending.
