Potential competitors next year: Horizon Zero Dawn God of War 4 Red Dead Redemption 2 Kingdom Hearts 3 Zelda: Breath of the wild And that's all I can think of right now. 2017 is a heavy hitter. I'm definitely looking forward to Horizon Zero Dawn. I'm praying to C'thulhu that it's good. Nah. RDR2, Zelda and Andromeda, for now, are the only guaranteed heavy hitters. Perhaps GOW4, but that game is taking whole new direction for the franchise, not sure it will be a good thing.

Next years big games are massive...but I think ME:A, RDR2, Horizon and Zelda are the biggest hitters. RDR2, if they don't bugger it up, will probably win most IMHO - RDR was next level amazing, right up there with Mass Effect in my heart (and that's waaaay up there). ME:A has a small surge of naysayers behind it that will need to be silenced before winning GOTY awards, but Inquisition did it after DA2....and that had the Hinterlands so I'm confused lol. Too close to call at this stage, I'm not really a Nintendo fan so Zelda isn't really in my running for potential GOTY thoughts if I'm being honest. ME:A and RDR2 in the same year....what a brilliant world we live in!

The only game I think would come close is Torment: Tides of Numeria mostly because of it being the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment. If it isn't cinematic it's a no-go. I think the VGA is always going to elect more cinematic games. I'm not just talking about VGAs. I mean all of the major and mid-size video game websites, conventions/trade shows, Youtube personalities/channels, magazines, newspapers, groups, and etc that can give a video game an award for anything. If I was just talking about the VGAs I don't think any game could win 100 awards from them alone.

The only "Game of the Year" Award that I care about a game winning is my "Game of the Year" award.
It doesn't matter if the critics love it or hate it, if I love it... that's what matters. If I don't love it... that's what matters.
That being said, everything I've seen so far has Andromeda firmly in the running for my personal GOTY award, and it's not that close (Red Dead 2 is a contender, but I don't love RDR like I love Mass Effect).

For me it is impossible to predict since the end of 2017 is over a year away and a lot of games are dumped into "Holiday Quarter" and might get pushed or even pushed six months with a summer release into 2018 and how people will like or not like the Switch could be an influence as well. I think the biggest competition would be Red Dead Redemption 2, but Rockstar has a history of multiple delays.
One thing to wonder is VR as well since it might get the "wow factor" and due to being different and interesting a title might be interesting such as when Taletell got a lot of awards with The Walking Dead since it was a phenomenon with the first game, but rarely hear from them now.

BioWare have won Game of The Year (consensus) twice with DAI and KOTOR, though Mass Effect 2 came a close second. BioWare's past GOTY success: - #1 Dragon Age Inquisition (2014) - 134 GOTY's
- #1 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2004) - 18 GOTY's
- #2 Mass Effect (2010) - 101 GOTY's - beaten (just) by Red Dead Redemption.
- #4 Dragon Age Origins (2009) - 21 GOTY's - beaten by Uncharted 2, Batman Arkham Asylum and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
- #5 Mass Effect 3 (2012) - 32 GOTY's - beaten by Walking Dead, Journey, Far Cry 3 and Dishonored.
- #7 Mass Effect (2007) - 4 GOTY's - beaten by Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Portal, Rock Band and Halo 3.
- #7 Jade Empire (2005) - 1 GOTY - beaten by Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Civilization IV, F.E.A.R. and Psychonauts.
- --- Dragon Age 2 did not chart
This is why I don't care about awards when deciding what to play. There are a fair number of games on this list that I wouldn't play for pay.

I must say, in regards to Horizon Zero Dawn, I don't get the enthusiasm. The concept seems highly contrived and makes no sense (dinosaur robots? protagonists wearing furs but using extremely high tech weapons as if they were magic?), and there is nothing that looks to me really interesting or fun about the gameplay, the world, or the potential story. It does look pretty strange, but with so few quality games on the market, I'm willing to give it a look see. I think it has potential. It suspect it will be pretty solid, or totally lame.

I don't really understand this. ME2 won 101 GOTY's and lost the collective total. Just how the hell many outfits claiming "game of the year" are there? Bio is also fortunate TW3 was delayed 6 months or most of those DAI received would have went to CDPR. Also a bit surprised about DAO and ME3...would have figured they'd done better. ME3 is sort of understandable with it's bad ending and hurt fanbase, but DAO being beat by COD and Batman? Meh. Doesn't exactly give me much confidence in these awards being meaningful or unbiased.

With the possible ward for the "most anticipated game", I'd say none.
Also, since ME:A was postponed to 2017, ME:A in theory should be zero, as this is the GOTY awards for 2016.
I'm unsure if it is the World Media Outlets that vote or just the North America ones.

ME3 is sort of understandable with it's bad ending and hurt fanbase, but DAO being beat by COD and Batman? Meh. Doesn't exactly give me much confidence in these awards being meaningful or unbiased. The GOTY blog tracks media outlets, game publications, awards bodies who hand out a 'Game of the Year' pronouncement. GOTY is not a rarified critical assessment, it is a collective consensus of games media (c.75%) and gamer votes (c.25%) of which is best. Over the years, more and more media outlets declare their GOTY view, so the number of GOTY's counted has increased (now c.400 contribute). To get the most GOTY's to be declared the consensus winner takes a higher score each year (134 for DAI in 2014, only 18 for KOTOR in 2004). Some media sites results will be neither meaningful nor unbiased, but because there are so many GOTY 'votes', the consensus outcome is meaningful because it is made up of so many different opinions. Sure, you may not have felt that COD and Batman were better than DAO, but as I understand it, those particular games were good examples of their franchise and that's what game media went for. And a game can be unlucky by being up against something that moved things forward , Fallout 4 losing to the Witcher 3; Grand Theft Auto V losing to The Last of Us; Or lucky, Dragon Age Inquisition was up against games that weren't quite as great as other years, but a win is a win

There are always a games that are considered good every year from media sources even if it isn't something that we all consider good.

And I'd add that I am absolutely not a member of the "DAI is shit' school of thinking, I played through that game some 6 times and along with multiplayer spent around 1000 hours in there. Sure, the Hinterlands were a bit 'fetchy', but it deserved the win in 2014, in my view.

Coming out the same year as Zelda, probably not that many. "Best RPG" and "Best Game" is hard to compete with I would guess. For being about exploration, the both of them, Zelda looks much more enticing. ME:A surely has the better story and world, but the open-world RPG aspect already looks so good in Zelda from what I've seen I think I've already picked my winner. ME:A needs to look less like DA:I when we see more gameplay to remedy that.
DA:I won my 2014 GOTY riiiight next to Destiny, but otherwise I cared for nothing, and Destiny of 2014 is a testament to how interesting the same year was. I mean, it was a really barebones game at the time yet it felt like the most anticipated release. I did play Wolfenstein The New Order this year and realized how good that was, but otherwise, I think DA:I was just very lucky in the time it came out right in time to be a GOTY contender among a lot of seemingly smaller big AAA releases.

The only GOTY award that matters is the one I give out in my head. ME:A has some serious competition from Persona 5, so we'll have to wait and see. I'll be sure to update you all when I reach a consensus!

2017 looks like pretty stiff competition. I wouldn't bet against a Rockstar or Zelda title. Nioh looks fantastic as well, but it being a PS4 exclusive I doubt it wins anything but gains a lot of nominations like Bloodborne did. I'm hoping Hyper Light Drifter does well this year tho (no idea why it isn't nominated for its art, it has the best pixel art I've ever seen).
