movieweb.com/rey-other-parents-considered-last-jedi/1. For all the haters out there, it could have been much much worse believe me. 2. I post this and bring this up to mention...lets just call it a theory. I wonder if we are awash in fan expecations and fan service these days. A lot of people rail against fan service but then a lot of the criticisms and then the 'here's what I would have done' sounds...fan servicey to the extreme. Rey is a Skyalker! Luke is a bad ass who went to Ach To for very bad ass reasons! Etc. But, as an author I can sympathize. Writing is not neccessarily about what is best of the audience, but what is best of the stories and characters. The audience is just along for the ride.

It wasn't casually mentioned and I think they had more pressing concerns at the time (like getting everyone to Crait so the resistance could be saved), again we still have an Episode IX and the impact of this revelation on Rey will be felt very much in that movie. Hell it wasn't like it was just tossed in there for no reason either, it was set up in TFA (her parents left her with Unkar Plunt FCOL), and then the cave scene in TLJ.

A member of the Lucasfilm Story Group has teased that more characters from Star Wars Legends will soon be making their way back into canon.
Now that director Ron Howard has confirmed that Tag and Bink (two minor characters from the EU) will appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story, fans can’t help but wonder which Legends characters will make the jump back into canon next. One Twitter user reached out to Lucasfilm Story Group member Leland Chee to ask him that very question.
Leland Chee - "You wouldn’t believe some of the Legends characters that will be cropping up in various media in the coming months. Hey, if Tag & Bink can show up, ANYthing is possible."
This is big news for diehard Star Wars fans who were hoping to see more from Legends making its way into the newly established continuity. There’s no telling who Chee is referring to here, but judging by the feedback on Twitter and Reddit, anything involving Darth Revan, Prince Xizor, or anything from Knights of the Old Republic will go over like gangbusters.screenrant.com/star-wars-legends-characters-canon-expanded-universe/

Writing is not necessarily about what is best of the audience, but what is best of the stories and characters. The audience is just along for the ride. Agreed. 1st of all, you're not an "Author", as you have no New York Times best sellers. Don't be a victim of the millennial bullshit belief that if you think for one second that you're a doctor or a rocket scientist, you are. Gimme a fucking break. You are a blogger at best. Be realistic for Christ's. 2nd, yes. You have a valid point. A story MUST serve the characters first. Secondly it must serve the LORE. The setting, the genre, and then from there the characters have to make a LOGICAL step towards what they desire or away from what they fear. If the author or screenwriter wants to slip a political or personal message in there, it can be done. The key is SUBTLETY. It must NOT feel like a fucking PSA or propaganda. Both of which are unfortunately the case with ep. 8. Lie to yourself all you want, you will realize it eventually...

I get it, but I feel like a lot of the writing decisions Johnson made were out of a desire to be subversive rather than whether that was necessarily best for the story.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of spirituality and astrophysics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Luke's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The true star wars fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these storylines, to realize that they’re not just about space wars- they say something deep about FAMILY ORIGINS that subverts all expectations. As a consequence people who dislike The Last Jedi truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn't appreciate how risky it is, for instance, the deep emotional impact in TLJ such as Luke’s existential line to Kylo "See you around kid", which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Rian Johnson’s genius unfolds itself on their movie screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Kylo Ren tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Then again, from what I'm hearing of Mickey's Luke, he's not worthy enough to even breathe in her general direction.

Was it any good? It sounds like a comedy. It's good for a quick laugh, and then you move on. Pretty much it's two minor and incompetent characters get caught up in the events of the movie and silliness ensues. You can get the entire series for a couple of bucks on Amazon. I don't think there were many entries: www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Bink-Were-Universe-ebook/dp/B00PR4B4I6
