Honesty time: I know its more than a likelihood that it would've end up bathed in mediocrity but it was one of the hype-pushers that got me back into Star Wars when it all started coming back. Its just as well that it doesn't get made, I suppose.

The theme song to that film. It's kind of catchy. I still think Jar-Jar gets a bad rap from the fanbase. I walked out of Phantom Menace as a nine-year-old Star Wars fanatic thinking he was the funniest part of the movie. He still makes me chuckle as I'm pushing 30. And a full-length Jar-Jar film cannot possibly do more damage to Star Wars than The Last Jedi did. So there's that in favor of Jar-Jar: A Star Wars Story.

Ok, I'm not sure if this kids book has been posted or mentioned, my daughter brought it home tonight and I thought it was just too cute. "Are You Scared Darth Vader?" here's a video of a guy reading it in the spoiler:

It's definitely the worst of the Lucas movies. But Phantom Menace is a great Star Wars movie. I've never, not once, understood the hate for it. I get the reality. I understand a lot of people don't like it. I've heard their reasons, and I find them insufficient. And Revenge of the Sith deserves the praise it gets. It's a very good Star Wars flick in its own right. The only area the Prequels really get bogged down in mediocrity is Attack of the Clones.

If you want a really good critique of The Phantom Menace, get a hold of a copy of The Phantom Edit. In the bonus features, the fella who put it together really explains how GL's story focus changed over the years and how that hurt the story.

Kid Anakin blundering into a space station and destroy it was totally unbelievable. That extends into Attack of Clones as well. There is one strong point of the prequels and it's expanding on the lore massively and provide much needed background for the franchise to persist. However it was all wasted with the copy and paste story in TFA.

APM was not great. It was barely good. But it had incredible moments, and for something that arguably was made for kids (see Pounce's post) it sure did have some heavy and dark moments. I absolutely hated AotC, and it still is my least favorite of the Lucas years. I would rather have to spend eternity watching it than ever have to watch any of the NuShit one more time. Revenge of the Sith is a great movie, fiteme By the way, I am hurting Star Wars when I call it shit, and this also hurts people. I am therefore a terror that must be stopped.

Not kidding in any fashion. I've seen Plinkett's review, and I don't really find his arguments convincing. I can tell that he doesn't like the movie, but that's as far as his reviews have ever taken me. I know it's supposed to be comedy as much as critique, but the only part I laughed at is when he showed off his basement and the woman was tied up in the corner. And every time he made an argument, I didn't follow his logic to the conclusion that he had reached. I understood the points he was trying to make, but I didn't find them compelling. So Plinkett's videos have never done anything for me.

There is one strong point of the prequels and it's expanding on the lore massively and provide much needed background for the franchise to persist. However it was all wasted with the copy and paste story in TFA. Yes, it's a movie for kids. I watched it as a kid and enjoyed the hell out of it. As I've gotten older, my love if that movie hasn't wavered much. I've done my best to remove my nostalgia goggles and see the movie through the eyes of an adult. And yet, I still enjoy the movie and don't find it boring in the slightest. I honestly feel that if you find Phantom Menace boring, I have to wonder how the heck you got through the first 30 minutes of ANH. I love the movie, but until the cantina scene it's mostly exposition and universe-building. It's a lot more personal, considering the focus is on Luke, but very little action takes place in the first third of that movie. Especially when compared to ESB or RotJ. It's very similar to AotC in that respect. The difference is that ANH actually sped up after the Cantina. You get Han Solo, Alderaan's destruction, the Death Star, etc. AotC maintained a slow pace all the way until the Arena scene and the Battle of Geonosis, and added a wooden love story for flavor. Still the worst Star Wars movie outside of the sequels. Agreed on TFA, though. They threw the one thing even the most ardent critics of the Prequels give credit for(world-building) out the window in favor of doing a cliff-notes version of A New Hope with Rey-Sue. I was willing to give that movie a pass for it's blatant copying if TLJ was at all decent. That didn't work out so well. Never have I seen a sequel destroy its own predecessor's themes and setups like TLJ destroyed TFA.

Yes, it's a movie for kids. I watched it as a kid and enjoyed the hell out of it. As I've gotten older, my love if that movie hasn't wavered much. Liking something doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be objectively good, whatever "objectively" means in this case. Likewise a technically "good" movie that receives critical acclaim for being "artistic" etc. is no guarantee that I'd enjoy it. I enjoyed the occasional crappy movie myself. And loathed quite a few critically acclaimed ones, so... *shrug*And yes, PM has some parts I consider just... bad, but as a whole I think that the movie was still fun to watch. Fair point. My enjoyment if the movie isn't much of a factor into whether the movie is "good" or not. Let me put it this way: I find the plot, characters and artistic design of The Phantom Menace to be the best of the prequels and enough to make it a very good Star Wars movie. And I have yet to see or read an argument that convinces me otherwise.

No argument on the planet would convince me to dislike A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. However, if you are interested in understanding why folks don't like it, I go back to my earlier suggestion about The Phantom Edit.

To reiterate Fen'Harel Faceman, Watch the Phantom Edit. You don't need to watch how or why it was made, but as adult you might find your mind blown. Basically, remove most of the cheese, which amounts to about 20 minutes of cut IIRC, and you have a much better Star Wars movie than what we watched. There was a profit agenda with the kid and Jar Jar. The rest was good fan service, which I enjoyed a great deal.
