Reyes Vidal - No longer A Mystery (Official Thread)

So, wanted to know if there's any other Latinx/Hispanic people hanging around this thread?

I was thinking, how do y'all feel about the fact that, if Reyes really is a Latino or Hispanic man, that he has a heavy accent and is voiced by a white guy trying to emulate this narrow view of a Hispanic person?

Like I'd be totally okay with this accent if the person who was voicing him was actually Latinx/Hispanic. But the fact that it's a white actor following directions for "what a Hispanic character is supposed to sound like" makes me a bit unsettled.

I feel like BioWare is so amazing in regards to a lot of areas of diversity and representation (I credit them for teaching me the importance of those things in media), but I also feel like they don't have a great track record with Latino characters. I mean, I'm going by the one character so far, which was Vega, and he was written terribly. I couldn't stand him looking at something troubling and saying "wow, this is loco..." because no actual Hispanic/Latinx person would actually say that lol.

I have faith he'll be a well written character, at least. But I can't help but be bothered by this at the moment.

If he turns out to be a quarian I'll let it slide because alien species with a variety of accents etc, but if we're going by leaks, he seems to be a human male.

Idk, what are your thoughts @ Hispanic and Latinx people? I saw a few people briefly mention the topic in the earlier pages but wanted to see more in-depth thoughts -- well, as much as we can with what we have now of Reyes!

vetras spanish here, I don't have a problem with Nicholas being caucasian because spaniards are mostly caucasians XD I would be more disappointed if this were the case of a character who is latino played by a white actor in a movie or vice versa (white character played by a latino), since this guy seems to be latino I don't know, Nicholas is just a voice actor, as long he plays nice the accent is good, although the majority of the times the accents are SO fake in voice actors that know nothing about the language unfortunately, James Vega's spanish is so lame that I can't even XD

James Vega is a bad example because Freddie Prinze Jr. is Peurto Rican and speaks fluent Spanish. When I hear people criticize his accent, it reminds me of people calling Leliana's French VO actress' natural accent fake. When I was in high school, my Castilian Spanish teacher was constantly telling me I wasn't speaking Spanish, because I spoke like my Peurto Rican grandmother. So Vega sounds just fine to me. (I think the Loco/Lola has more to do with his frat boy personality than accent, though).

As for caucasian actors playing Latinos, I think I prefer someone who speaks the language fluently, but I don't care really as long as they are good actors. I really liked male Hawke and I think the Spanish accent adds extra sexiness, so I hope Reyes has a large role and is a love interest.

Okay so after someone (sorry can't remember who!) posted they wanted Miguel Ángel Silvestre as the face model for Reyes this is all I can think about BECAUSE DAMN YES

I can tell you as spanish that his accent is really fake, but well I can't make you change your opinion in the subject, just giving my opinion as native spanish speaker 
The loco/loca thing is totally fine with his personality and I really liked that, is what we call "spanglish" here hehe

His pronunciation is what I meant for accent (as you see my english is as fake as Freddie's spanish ) 

Just to clarify, I really like Freddie as an actor (live action or voice, and he's the Iron Bull who I love so much), his Puerto Rican accent is fine enough, just some words he says are wrongly pronounced, and this happen many times with latino/hispanic characters in the media, and I hope this won't happening with Reyes   It doesn't bother me that much though, but it would be sweet having a character with a proper native speaker as his/her voice actor for a change, just like Miguel Caballero Rojo from Tekken.

And yes hunky nerdy scientist is the popular choice!! 

To clarify what I mean, it's not that Freddie's pronounces some words wrong, it's a regional difference. To us (and other Peurto Ricans) you are the one pronouncing words wrong. 😄 I've noticed the Mexican Spanish speakers also say things differently, and maybe that's what you've seen/ heard in American media. (Despite being a US protectorate, I don't hear the Peurto Rican pronunciation much in American media, it's mostly Mexican pronunciation).

i haven't heard enough of Nicholas Boulton's spanish to determine where it might be from, but honestly I'm not very good at that (identifying accents). To me Irish and Scottish English sound the same most of the time, and apparently there are dozens of regional dialects in Great Britain that I can't hear the difference in. (Except for Sera's VA that's very different!) 

Generally, I don't care about people's accents, it's other vocal qualities that are important to me. Fenris, Garius, Kadian, Solas, mHawke/Reyes voices are all ...just yum to me. While Anders, Cullen, Alistair,  Zevran, and Vega/Iron Bull are good they just don't do anything for me. I'm not really sure what the difference is, or why. I know others find those voices extremely sexy. 

That being said, vocal quality does seem to play a big part in my "attraction" to video game characters. I enjoy the Cullen romance (& I like his personality) but l like the Solas romance in DAI a little more, I think, because I'm attracted to that voice.

This is a big reason why I hope Reyes is a love interest (preferably bi, but if gay my Scott Ryder can indulge) 😍! I haven't heard enough from Liam or anything from Jaal to determine if I find their voices sexy, so currently my favorite possible love interest is Reyes. Obviously, the characters personality and romance arc will be what ultimately decide my favorites for me, but the initial spark of interest for me hinges on the voice.

Side note: I also think Bioware needs to spread the love between NPCs in pre-game content. Cora, already spoiled with screentime, just had a phone image released while Peebee, Vetra and Drack are showered with lots of screenshots.

Still have absolutely nodda on Reyes and barely a scrape on Jaal. Can't help but feel depressed when this happens as I'm still way too hopeful Reyes will be an important and legitimate NPC on the Tempest.

Seriously though, Bioware always knows what I find to be the most important and decides to keep that locked away in an atomic bomb proof safe hidden in the fuggin himalayas guarded by fuggin Hades and a rabid iguana. EVERY. TIME. THIS ROUND IT'S REYES AND HIS BOD

It was really weird "dream trailer," it went to Jaal and he began talking with a very strangely modified voice to a Ryder out of screen, and went to a terminal to raise Reyes for a mission briefing or something (I'm assuming.) Reyes walks up behind the terminal and says "that won't be necessary. I'm already here." 

I'm such BSN trash that I might've immediately went to this thread in dream to freak out that he was there, and to get thoughts on his appearance.  

I feel as though Reyes is important. A dev said that we will "hear more about him, if Courtney Woods (his writer) has anything to say about it." I think it would be a little cruddy if they made people excited and intrigued by Reyes, only to have him be a once-off character for a mission. Could be wrong though! 

Alanah Pearce from IGN will be dropping an article about her preview of the game: we might hear confirmation on an occupation for Reyes depending on what she's allowed to disclose. I kind of hope that a new trailer for the favorites system or a new briefing video will drop as well!
