To turn SAM into a full AI and place it in a robot body seems too much like a repeat. That said, a synthetic explorer who doesn't have to worry about things like atmosphere and has a greater resistance to temperature extremes would seem like a desirable thing.

I want an artificially intelligent "sidekick" about as much as I want a toaster that whines about its civil rights or wishes to talk about its feelings before it'll make my goddamn bagel.
Now, possessing the technology for an actually proper functioning AGI, (i.e. an unquestioning, disposable and obedient synthetic servant, or a billion) would be quite nice. Splendid, even. Unfortunately, according to the in universe authority of a petulant albeit functionally omnipotent 9 year old, Friendly AI's don't seem to have the ability to exist in the ME universe ("Inevitable" robo-rebellion and all that nonsense).
Thusly, the only "sidekick" I desire in regard to the next murderously malfunctioning mechanical Pinnochio in this series is side-kicking it out the airlock.
Hopefully, I am provided this option as with the damaged ME2 geth platform, and unlike with the mandatory cyberwarfare suite/ disturbing pleasure robot.

In terms of the game? Technically we have Sam riding our brains so he can be seen as a sidekick. I enjoyed Legion's participation but was leery of Edi (it was the pornstar body that bugged me.) Depends on how they would write the character really. It is possible they may give him a platform to move about in, but I'm just surmising.

Absolutely. HK-47, SCORPIO and Legion were all great characters. Now I didn't care for EDI as much, but you can blame creepy-Joker for that. So long as there's no romantic implication between the synthetic sidekick and a crew member I'm good.

I adored EDI and thought Legion could've been the most interesting squaddie in ME2 if not for the fact that you recruit him at the very end of the game.

Yes. Geth were my favorite race from Mass Effect and, in overall, I always seem to enjoy characters who are synthetics/robots/androids. They view things differently, act differently, bring up different ideas... I very much enjoy that.

Why no poll for this one?
I'll preface by saying that I always encourage EDI to romance Joker and become more human. I also mix her in for squadmate use like all the rest (except my LI, who I always bring). Unless I've screwed up somewhere, I also broker peace between the geth and the quarians.
All that said, no, I'm not looking for a new synthetic squadmate. It's sort of a "been there, done that" type of scenario. EDI was a sex bot, physically speaking, and though I realize SAM is "male" I don't know that we need a male version of a sex bot. What might make me change my mind is if the synthetic were, from casual observation, organic in nature. If you watch Agents of SHIELD, they've got these LMDs (Life Model Decoy) that are outwardly indistinguishable from humans. Something like that might sway my interest, particularly if it were an Andromedan and we don't initially know we're interacting with a synthetic - it's something we discover, maybe on the loyalty mission. Other that that, little interest.
For the record, I believe that in 160 years synthetics will likely be integrated with human society, but that's potential real life and not a sci fi future.

That's a pretty interesting thought. Probably won't happen, but it could be fascinating if done right...would also bring interesting RP opportunities, making you completely reconsider their character, or maybe having to convince them you don't actually mind they are synthetic..hmmm
