BioWare Blog: " Announcing Mass Effect: Annihilation Discover the danger aboard the quarian ark in Mass Effect: Annihilation, an upcoming novel from Hugo Award-winning author Catherynne M. Valente. This official tie-in novel chronicles the journey of the Keelah Si’yah as it carries 20,000 drell, elcor, batarian, and quarian colonists to Andromeda. A pathogen is discovered aboard the ark after many drell are found dead in their cryo pods. As the pathogen jumps species, the ship’s systems begin to fail, making it clear this is no accident. Annihilation arrives in US, Canadian, and UK stores on June 26, 2018 (August 28, 2018 in Australia)." Really? Dying Drell....again. personally I'm surprised a clan of Dalish elves weren't aboard and didn't all die horribly in a gasoline explosion tbh

Joking aside, so only next year now? Wasn't this supposed to be out later this year? Guess they need the time to rewrite the DLC story into a book. Makes me wonder what was the original story about...

According to in-game dialogue they might also have Hanar and Volus, unless they decided to write them off lol.

Maybe they think things will have calmed down by then as the whole "Quarian Ark"-topic would just remind people of the cancelled DLC. Calmed down to a degree that nobody cares at all anymore, as lilyenachaos said. Even if they really need that long to rewrite the book (how long does writing a book take, anyway, especially if you don't have to start from 0?) and it is not some great marketing decision, the author(s) are screwed in any case. Should they deliver good work, despite the circumstances, still nobody will like the novel, just on general principle, because the Salt is strong with Bioware fans. Waiting one year won't exactly improve anyone's mood, at least not for those who still care.

Catherynne Valente @catvalente For those who are angry about this development: this book has been in the works for 18 months. It was always planned. She's referenced this before in the past but it still seems...odd. Why reference something in-game that will only be resolved through media outside of the game? Is there a precedence for this for BioWare in previous games? I don't think so but I don't remember. So, if this was planned prior to the game's release and controversial reception, why would it take almost two years to write and why was it initially positioned as the first book released? Some points are just not adding up...

I am quoting what the author of Annihilation said on reddit...
"Hi guys, Catherynne Valente here. You may remember me from such things as that press release you just read.
I just wanted to say that while I'm as disappointed as you are, if not more, that DLC hasn't manifested, I will be doing my absolute best to bring to life every bit of the ME universe I can and tie it into a satisfying bow for you guys.
I am a huge fan of Mass Effect, and under my incognito account, an active member of this sub. I wanted to write this novel so badly. I sought out the contract and auditioned and campaigned for it. The day Bioware and I had our first meeting some 18 months ago was one of the happiest of my life as a writer. So rest assured that the Quarian ark is in the hands of a fan as obsessive as you are. I can't talk about plot or what is or isn't included beyond what Bioware has made public, but I was given permission to work with some of my favorite parts of the canon, and as I told them ages ago, if I had gotten to pick what story to write for ME, it would have been this one.
Please also understand that this actually isn't a cash grab or anything like that, no matter what I've heard people say. No one is trying to screw the fans. I was hired to write this almost two years ago, it was always planned, simply delayed for reasons I know you're all aware of, since, you know, I lurk here a lot. The amount of time and energy I have poured into this project is more than I can calculate. This is a labor of love, and while we all might wish that it was a labor of love with accompanying DLC, none of us have much control over that, and it doesn't change the nature of a book that was always my little-kid-crayon-hearts love letter to Mass Effect.
I got you, fam.

So, if this was planned prior to the game's release and controversial reception, why would it take almost two years to write and why was it initially positioned as the first book released? Some points are just not adding up... The book was likely to have covered many of the same events but to serve as a prelude to a DLC, kind of like how Nexus Uprising serves as a prelude to Andromeda. They're likely adding the DLC content as part of the novel, hence the delay. Also, to those saying how long does it take to write a novel? A long long time, unless you're lucky enough to be a writer like Stephen King. Creative writing is fun, but it can be a slow, difficult process.

Me: "Sorry, got one more question (this is from the BSN forums)...
In Andromeda, it was mentioned that the Hanar & Volus were on the Ark. But now the blog says the Batarians are on board without mentioning the other two.
This one wheezes wishes to know wheezes whether the Hanar & Volus wheezes are on board the Quarian Ark."
Cat: "I cannot discuss it but wheeze I would go ahead and assume anything actually in Andromeda is canon."
Edit: Okay, the "I cannot discuss it" might've been referring to before I changed the word "where" to "whether" on my last sentence. But Now I guess it seems that the Quarians, Drell, Hanar, Elcor, Volus and Batarians are on the Quarian ark.
Which means there would now be a total of 11 Milky Way species in Andromeda, with 6 of them on a smaller scale population-wise (I mean, you're cramming 6 species into a single ark so...)

Me:"Sorry, got one more question (this is from the BSN forums)... In Andromeda, it was mentioned that the Hanar & Volus were on the Ark. But now the blog says the Batarians are on board without mentioning the other two. This one wheezes wishes to know wheezes whether the Hanar & Volus wheezes are on board the Quarian Ark." Cat:"I cannot discuss it but wheeze I would go ahead and assume anything actually in Andromeda is canon." Hmmm, so that's kind of a yes but without actually saying it.

I think the "I cannot discuss it" part was referring to before I edited my post from " where the hanar & volus are" to " whether the hanar & volus are". And omg, if the Virtual Aliens are also in the ark I would be so happy...and also mad cause I'm creating a D&D Mass Effect campaign involving the VAs and now it might not be canon Edit: I ALWAYS edit my posts after sending it, smh.

Well bioware never once did a so obvious DLC bait in the game without actually delivering said DLC. Anyway, thanks Catherynne Valente for the answers(and the person who posted them here).

Really? Dying Drell....again. IKR? Intentional plague ship is so cliche, too. Color me disappointed. There are so many other ways the Ark could have gone astray: * PIRATES vs. Drell ninjas. I mean, that book just writes itself. * Nav malfunction and the ark is stuck in the Big Dark, or better yet, in the Greater Magellenic Cloud, but they THINK they're in Andromeda! Ho boy, the astronomical hijinks that would have created: "You, sir, don't know a parsec from a megasecond!" * Some hanar stowaway thinks he's Blasto and wrecks the ship's nav by accident and sends it down a wormhole, ending up in a galaxy-sized entity that demands entertainment to relieve it's gigayear long ennui. A mixed crew re-enacts some of Blasto's greatest adventures. (In Act 3, the enraged entity gets ready to destroy the ship, only to be destroyed instead by a recitation of elcor poetry.) It's not that hard!
