Nice going to look for a ebook to read. bn.com has it. I'm on Chapter 1. It's not reading like a typical N.K Jemisin novel, which has me wondering just how much Mac Walters wrote or rewrote. There are a ton of in-game lore references already, which is great for a fan, but I doubt Jemisin is a player, so where did that all come from? I think I've read that contract novels do usually come with a "Bible" for canon lore, but sheesh, it would be the size of a dozen dictionaries at this point. Who has time to read all that? |

Like the Marvel Shared Universe, they would need to start from the beginning. In this case, you'd be looking at the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars and the iced Mass Effect relay near Pluto, passing through the relay and encountering the Turians, the First Contact War, a peace treaty and introduction to the different Citadel Races, humans being accepted into the galactic community, Captain Anderson and his encounters with Saren, and, ultimately, Saren's finding Sovereign. All these plot points could be done over several successful movies, if written well, and never touch the Shepard plotline although it would be leading up to it. From there, the producers could, after having firmly established the Mass Effect Universe, delve into the "Shepard/Reaper" story.

The novel was supposed to be the first one, originally. Without the Mac Walters byline. She also doesn't really tweet about it or anything. Something must've happened. She is a ME player, but maybe Mac helped with some of those lore references. I finished the novel. It's not a long book, more like a novella. In fact, I think something got edited out, because it ends very abruptly with some rather significant loose ends left unresolved. If I hadn't seen the byline, I never would have guessed it was Jemisin's work. Still, for what's there, it's an enjoyable read. Cora is depicted pretty well, if a tad one-dimensional compared to the in-game character. And it does go into the state of Earth society during the last days of the Initiative before launch, which was interesting. I'm not sure what the division of labor was, but I'd bet 23 credits that Mac wrote the prologue to each chapter, which read pretty much like Alliance News Network codex entries. |
