Click to enlarge Same source like beforeFirst book now to be released in march 2017. The one by NK Jemisin called Andromeda Initiative is third in line and still described as the official prequal to the game, which might point to the first two ( Nexus Uprising and Lost Ark) being both entirely set before the arks leave in the first place. The motivation for the trip could be much, much bigger than we think.

Ohh, all of the authors are apparently fans of the game!
I am a bit concerned about this bit: "-weave directly into the action of the new game and reveal events kept secret over the course of the game play-". It may be about events that took place in the trilogy but it sounds like it also involves events that took place in Andromeda.
If it is the latter then I worry since it might end up with story portions like Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts quest wherein players who have not read The Masked Empire book will know very little about the figures involved because the game did not offer a way of attaining this knowledge prior or during the quest in question. It was something that could have been solved with a questline that ran prior to the quest.
Basically, I'm worried that there'll be times where players who have not read these books are missing information that should have been in the game. That said, the teams do share feedback with each other so this is unlikely to happen so soon after Inquisition.
I'll like to note that if it does involve Andromeda then I don't mind it if it is content such as additional information, perspectives to events and such that could not be in the game for one or another and if the events or such did not involve the player.

Catherynne M. Valente?! How much is Bioware spending on these books that they're getting not one but two Hugo Award-nominated authors to write their tie-in novels?

Here is the information:
Mass Effect Launching a brand new series of Mass Effect novels which tie in to the epic game.
With a new game - Mass Effect: Andromeda - set for release in 2017, the launch of a new series of Mass Effect novels is timely. The new game will take the story in a dramatic new direction set in a new region of Space, with a new and deadly enemy.
Titan will publish four unmissable Mass Effect novels sure to appeal to the game's huge number of fans. The game Mass Effect has won numberous Awards, including Best Story, Best Voice Acting, Best Original Music and from the New York Times, Game of the Year.
The novels will act as prequel and sequels to events in the games and will become part of the overarching Mass Effect saga. These new stories, developed in close collaboration with the Bioware game team, weave directly into the action of the new game and reveal events kept secret over the course of game play, and which add to the canonical Mass Effect saga.
Mass Effect: Nexus Uprising
Jason Hough is the New York Times bestselling author of the The Darwin Elevator, Dire Earth Cycle and Zero World. He has been a 3D artist, animator, and game designer for Metal Fatique, Alien vs Predator, and others. K.C. Alexander is the author of paranormal romances and the steampunk adventure the St. Croix Chrornicles. She is an avid player of Mass Effect and has logged more than 500 hours on the game.
Mass Effect: Lost Ark
Catherynne Valente is an acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction novels, short stories, and poetry including Paimpest, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. She has won or been nominated for every major award in the field including the Hugo Award (four times), Nebula Award (two times), Locus Award (five times), World Fantasy Award (four times), and the James Tiptree Jr. Award. She is a huge Mass Effect fan and player.
Mass Effect: Andromeda Initiative
N.K. Jemisin's debut novel The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms was nominated for the Nebula Award, the Hugo Award, Locus Award, World Fantasy Award and short-listed for the James Triptree Jr. Award. In 2016, N.K. Jemisin was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novel for her book the Fifth Season, winner of a Hugo Award in 2016 and the official "prequel" to the events of the game.

Both her, Jemisin and Alexander are said to be huge fans of Mass Effect so they might have been happy to write the novels. I don't know if it is possible to do so or if they did but If I had the option of writing for one of my favorite series, I might lower my fee significantly.

The fan factor probably had a lot to do with it but still, I'm really surprised. Video game tie-in novels aren't exactly prestigious. Their past novels were all written by Bioware writers or pretty unknown writers (Dietz, Merciel), so to go from that to NY Times bestselling authors and Hugo Award nominees and winners is quite an upgrade (well, in theory at least. We'll have to see how the books actually turn out). Also, I notice than the fourth book no longer as Mac Walters listed as an author. Maybe he was just a placeholder. Maybe they'll try to get another SFF writer who's also a Mass Effect fan. Kameron Hurley is one too. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see her name come up too.

I've never heard of any negative image from writing a video game tie-in novel especially if the author is established and have other things under their belt like these do. Add in that they are fans so they probably would not care if it was not seen as a prestigious project by others.
I'm curious to see if this leads to players of the Mass Effect series checking out other works by these authors and if readers of these authors' books decide to check out Mass Effect through these novels.

I see four books mentioned but only three titled and those three's authors talked about: are you referring to something else or?
If not placeholder then it may be that they needed his time and attention elsewhere and that it proved too big a workload if he also had to write one of the novels. Could be real life taken priority as it sometimes happens. It could also be he was only there to outline the stories and their essentials or is a part of the Bioware team that works in close collaboration with these authors on these novels.

That's my point. The writers for video game tie-ins are generally not established the way Jemisin, Hough and Valente are, or at least definitely not as popular. You look through the Goodreads of the guys who wrote the Assassin's Creed, Halo, Bioshock tie-ins etc. and their own stuff outside struggles to get past 1000 ratings. Jemisin and Valente have books with over 25,000 ratings, and they're both highly critically acclaimed authors as well. I would definitely expect some of their pre-existing fans to check out the tie-in books, and probably the games too. Also, I notice than the fourth book no longer as Mac Walters listed as an author. Maybe he was just a placeholder. Maybe they'll try to get another SFF writer who's also a Mass Effect fan. Kameron Hurley is one too. Just speculating on other SFF authors who are Mass Effect fans.

At first I saw this thread title and was like Then I saw that the books were delayed to March But timelines change and I'm ok with that. Sounds like they've got 2 award winning authors writing some pretty significant stories for the overarching Mass Effect story as a whole. At least I'll have some books to read next year that can possibly pull me away from playing the game.

First book now to be released in march 2017. The one by NK Jemisin called Andromeda Initiative is third in line and still described as the official prequal to the game, which might point to the first two (Nexus Uprising and Lost Ark) being both entirely set before the arks leave in the first place. The motivation for the trip could be much, much bigger than we think. Not necessary, since both Initiative and Lost Ark come out after game release their chronological order doesn't matter much. Anyway it's good to see that BW/EA really puts some effort into books this time with these authors. I'm interested in all of them right now. P.s. it's finally official confirmation that these biggies are called Arks. Mass Effect: Lost Ark.....this feels like something to expect from a DLC It may be a DLC related. Summer 2017 seems like a time for first major DLC.

LOST ARK CONFIRMED!!!
I guess that would be a pretty important plot point? Maybe our mom is in there? Maybe we will understand what happened with that Ark in the next game?
Wait... what if WE are the LOST ARK??? What if we should go to another cluster of Andromeda and we end in Helius Cluster??
Sorry, I'm babbling. Too many feelings!!!

Well if the first one is supposed to be a leadup to the actual game, I think the second one will be Ryder's journey (or somebody on Ryder's ship).
So, the theory that he/she (Ryder) was attacked and got away by the seat of her pants continues.
AND, if we are the lost Ark. think about what that could do for the rest of the series. That would setup a lot. One capitol ship when we are supposed to have three. Less resources, sometimes no resources (because what if they're on another Ark), what happened to our brother/father, and ultimately what will happen once we come together again?

My first guess:
Nexus Uprising: Entirely set in the Milky Way. Something huge is discovered and/or happens. Entire new plot, of Reaper proportions. Set during Mass Effect 1.
Lost Ark: An expedition that is investigating the huge plot thing of Nexus Uprising finds an Ark, made by a civilization many cycles a go. It has the technology to undertake a intergalactic journey. Also entirely set in the Milky Way.
Andromeda Initiative: Because of big plot thing the scientists from Lost Ark start a project with the ancient Ark technology and start the Andromeda Initiative.
Other theory:
NK Jemisin is so busy with writing bestsellers and winning awards that her book that is supposed to be the first one is getting very delayed. Therefore BioWare decided to start with a book that's technically set after Andromeda Initiative.

Or ... maybe the backstory for Ma and Pa Ryder and why mom didn't make the trip. Perhaps Pa Ryder is filling the role of Anderson ... not to be killed off in the game, not to become an antagonist ... but to be a mentor while still actively involved in other areas of the ME:A universe.
This is dad and mom Ryder's story ... only instead of a situation like the one with Kahlee Sanders showing up in the game, Ma Ryder dies in some adventure that leads Pa Ryder down the path of putting the rest of the family on the Ark ship ... perhaps irrespective of the Reapers ... perhaps irrespective of Cerberus ... something totally unrelated ... or not. Maybe mom shows up in ME:A2 ... hinted at in the lost Ark?
Hey, this is supposed to be a clean sheet restart for the ME franchise ... with MET safely long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Whatever big picture, overarching story arc the BioWare team has planned, it probably won't be what we expect.

I could see the first book being a prequel just like Mass Effect Retribution is to Mass Effect 1. If they follow the same pattern then the protagonist would be someone still important in the game, so DadRyder could be a nice possibility.
The second feels like a DLC preparation: bring back all species who couldn't fit inside Bro/SisRyder's Ark ship.
ps: i can't find a link inside Titans site. Where did you get the picture op?

The second feels like a DLC preparation: bring back all species who couldn't fit inside Bro/SisRyder's Ark ship. ps: i can't find a link inside Titans site. Where did you get the picture op? It's this link. I doubt a writer would agree to write just a lead up to a DLC.
