With a new game - Mass Effect: Andromeda - set for release in 2017, the launch of a new series of Mass Effect novels is timely. The new game will take the story in a dramatic new direction set in a new region of Space, with a new and deadly enemy.

He has been a 3D artist, animator, and game designer for Metal Fatique, Alien vs Predator, and others. K.C. Alexander is the author of paranormal romances and the steampunk adventure the St. Croix Chrornicles. She is an avid player of Mass Effect and has logged more than 500 hours on the game.

Mass Effect: Lost Ark

Catherynne Valente is an acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction novels, short stories, and poetry including Paimpest, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. She has won or been nominated for every major award in the field including the Hugo Award (four times), Nebula Award (two times), Locus Award (five times), World Fantasy Award (four times), and the James Tiptree Jr. Award. She is a huge Mass Effect fan and player.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Initiative

N.K. Jemisin's debut novel The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms was nominated for the Nebula Award, the Hugo Award, Locus Award, World Fantasy Award and short-listed for the James Triptree Jr. Award. In 2016, N.K. Jemisin was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novel for her book the Fifth Season, winner of a Hugo Award in 2016 and the official "prequel" to the events of the game.

The fan factor probably had a lot to do with it but still, I'm really surprised. Video game tie-in novels aren't exactly prestigious. Their past novels were all written by Bioware writers or pretty unknown writers (Dietz, Merciel), so to go from that to NY Times bestselling authors and Hugo Award nominees and winners is quite an upgrade (well, in theory at least. We'll have to see how the books actually turn out). 

Also, I notice than the fourth book no longer as Mac Walters listed as an author. Maybe he was just a placeholder. Maybe they'll try to get another SFF writer who's also a Mass Effect fan. Kameron Hurley is one too. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see her name come up too. 

Mass Effect: Lost Ark.....this feels like something to expect from a DLC

I was going to comment on that, the pedigree of the authors looks pretty good here which pleases me.

I believe it's unlikely that we are the lost ark.

Anyway, that would be a perfect excuse to bring more Milky Way species to Andromeda. (if the Ark from the game don't have everyone).

That is what i am hoping

My first guess:

Nexus Uprising: Entirely set in the Milky Way. Something huge is discovered and/or happens. Entire new plot, of Reaper proportions. Set during Mass Effect 1.

Lost Ark: An expedition that is investigating the huge plot thing of Nexus Uprising finds an Ark, made by a civilization many cycles a go. It has the technology to undertake a intergalactic journey. Also entirely set in the Milky Way.

Andromeda Initiative: Because of big plot thing the scientists from Lost Ark start a project with the ancient Ark technology and start the Andromeda Initiative.

Other theory:

NK Jemisin is so busy with writing bestsellers and winning awards that her book that is supposed to be the first one is getting very delayed. Therefore BioWare decided to start with a book that's technically set after Andromeda Initiative.

I could see the first book being a prequel just like Mass Effect Retribution is to Mass Effect 1. If they follow the same pattern then the protagonist would be someone still important in the game, so DadRyder could be a nice possibility.

The second feels like a DLC preparation: bring back all species who couldn't fit inside Bro/SisRyder's Ark ship.
