Opinions are personal. So I think we generally are inclined to take a difference in opinions as a personal affront. I think. Maybe?

The thing about opinions is that mine are always right.

When people feel strongly about something discussions are likely to turn into arguments I think some people need to learn that opinions are never wrong... every opinion is true, its just a different way of looking at the same thing really That being said if I came on the forum and just talked about the things/people I hated all the time and rarely contributed anything positive if at all then id be a very unhappy person and feel as if I was dragging the forum down with me... im happy to talk about the things I love with the people I love and I avoid arguments/heated discussions whenever possible tis not why im here... im here to try and enjoy myself and have fun, and doing anything else is a completely alien concept to me My opinion is: when a discussion is 2 people so set in their beliefs that neither will budge, its a pointless discussion and it wont end well, and someone needs to be the better person and end it before it gets out of hand Sharing opinions should be about learning, and self-improvement... everyone has something to learn from other people, no one is always right... it shouldnt be about insulting people and degrading their opinions and who they are, it should be a positive thing

Opinions really don't change much unless something drastic happens in their lives. Or very gradually over many years.
Otherwise no one really changes their opinions and people just end up getting offended.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and I see no need to try and affect on that. Because especially if your view differs much the other one will just cling to their belief on the subject harder. Even though you could present hard facts or evidence to prove it wrong. This goes on in daily opinions as well as in science and more important history / future writing opinions. I usually don't bring up my opinion in conversations if it differs much. Because when you do it just causes hurt, havoc and some misunderstanding. Not in me because I can always stand behind my opinion but in others who most likely deliberately take it wrong and jump into hurt train immediately without having a conversation about it. Here's actually quite interesting article about the matter.

I think most of the time it is true that neither side in a debate is swayed by the other's arguments. People can be stubborn as mules sometimes, and most hate being wrong, especially when they are. They'd rather stubbornly cling to their position than concede anything that might look like defeat.
That said, I wouldn't say that debates are entirely pointless. I know I've changed my mind a few times based on opposing arguments made in an online debate.
More importantly the argument might sway other people who are reading but not taking part. Lets say for example you're engaged in a debate with someone who believes humans never landed on the moon and the whole thing was hoaxed. No amount of facts or logic hurled at that fool is ever going to penetrate the tinfoil barrier on his head, but you might just convince someone reading not to drink the conspiracy theorist Kool-Aid. That makes it worthwhile.
