If they were to do something live-action in the Mass Effect universe, I'd rather see it made into some kind of series like the Expanse. Safe options would be to focus it on either the early days of the Systems Alliance, the First Contact War or something set in Andromeda.
If they did do something set during ME1, it would have to be a "Meanwhile..." sidequel where we're following a totally different Alliance ship and crew dealing with their own unique plotline. Shepard's gender and background could be left vague, but we could still have moments where we bump against the game.
We could see a bunch of Alliance soldiers go to Chora's Den for a drink, only to find dead bodies everywhere from Shepard's fight with Fist? Or be sent to deal with the aftermath of another Rachni, Geth, Husk experiment by Cerberus? And seeing the battle of the Citadel and Sovereign from another perspective would be incredible.
Would be an especially nice addition if they could have Yvonne Strahovski show up as Miranda, either as a minor character or merely a brief cameo. Would tie it closer to the games and give us a look at what she was doing during the events of the first game.

The Mass Effect movie appears to be stuck in development hell, which probably means it is never happening.
That is probably a good thing, as Hollywood's track record with video game adaptations is extremely poor. Most are made on the cheap with a cast, director, and writers drawn from Hollywood's C and D lists, and are little more than attempt by film studios to milk an existing fandom without taking on much risk.
Assuming the Shepard trilogy was adapted to film, it would also by necessity have to be very different from the games. The endings of course, could not work on film. They didn't even work in the game. The cast of characters is also far too large for three movies that would probably clock in around two hours each, at most. A lot of the companion characters would end up on the cutting room floor. Most likely, the cast of ME2 would be tossed out and it would be the ME1 cast across all three films. None of the side quests or DLCs would make the films either, except for maybe Javik.

Honestly, I feel like the ship has long sailed on the movie project. They missed their window, especially if it's going to be on Shepard. Doing a movie on Shepard would never happen - whatever they do, they'd piss of a part of their fanbase, and - intentionally or not - they'd build a "canon Shepard" or "Bioware Shepard", which would be just... weird, IMO. Part of the fun of ME is that you pick what your Shepard is like, from their genre and appearance to their service history and psychological profile. But, in all honesty, that speculation is probably moot, since the ME movie has been in development hell for... how many years already? and the occasional good movies that come around after experiencing the Development Hell are few and far between (the only really good one I can name on the top of my head is Deadpool), and I sadly suspect that the ME movie won't be any one of those. So yeah, I agree: the ship has sailed on the movie project, but not because of Shepard. And, finally... If I had to choose, I'd also rather opt for a live-action miniseries set in-universe. Would've loved to see something set in the Terminus Systems and Omega.

The first screen-play writer was clearly an idiot. The notion that first game couldn't be adapted to a 2.5 hour movie is demonstrably false - see various youtube fan edits of the first game for proof of that.
We all have our own interpretations of the story and characters that's fine. It's the same with any book adaptation since the dawn of cinema.
Video game movies will become the last gold mine soon. We're just waiting for the first one to break a billion dollars worldwide and hollywood will smell money. Chinese people will watch anything.

Well, they have been seen talking to Kenneth Brannagh. Just sayin'... Nick Sadler @zenderquaiKenneth Brannagh is not amused, apparently... @paulsjdutton @aimsthefirst ginger_Gir1 That may be a guy named Kenneth Brannagh, but it's not Kenneth Branagh the director. Kenneth Branagh doesn't have a cleft chin. Or was that a joke? Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to sound dickish. I don't know who those people in the photo are or what the context was, which may help. In any event, I don't think the one on the right is the director with the same sounding name.

If a Mass Effect movie ever does get made, I hope it is after some other video game adaptation has become a huge commercial and critical success. I think following in the footsteps of a hit is the only way Mass Effect might get the budget and studio backing it needs to be good. You can't make an epic Space Opera on a shoestring budget and garbage CGI.
No video game that has been adapted to film has been *the* summer blockbuster yet, so scripts based on video games are not really seriously invested in by studios. All it takes is one film however to change perceptions, much like comic books that were adapted to film. There was a time when comics weren't taken seriously either. Now comic book films often dominate the summer lineup.

If it can only be done badly, I'd rather not have a movie.
If it can be done well, I'd prefer the original trilogy to an Andromeda movie, even though it would have to be some generic Shepard.

You just know that if they attempt to put this thing on film, they'll just aim squarely for the main conflict of the franchise, and it'll turn out to be total shit.

You just know that if they attempt to put this thing on film, they'll just aim squarely for the main conflict of the franchise, and it'll turn out to be total shit. Some stories simply cannot be made into good films. Mass Effect has some qualities that could make for a popular blockbuster; but those aren't necessarily the same qualities that made it our favorite game series, fun as they were. If they stuck to telling stand alone stories, mostly unrelated to game events, I'd be receptive to the idea. Mac's interview clearly indicated an Andromeda novel would've led into an Andromeda film. If nothing else, it indicates that the IP is alive and well in the minds of BioWare and EA, particularly so if you consider the novel series, as well. That's good news for fans. I've never supported the IP beyond games and novels, because reading and limited gaming are two of my primary hobbies. I'd support decent films, too, though I'm definitely not a movie or TV watcher.

I would rather have Mass Effect made into something like a well-done Netflix series myself....
BUT....I will say this. I think a lot of video game movies are on hold right now to see how the success of Assassin's Creed goes. Warcraft success was "eh...." but that's better than the horseshit that was the last Hitman movie. I'm thinking that all these movies that are "out there" (mass effect, Gears of War, Uncharted, The Last of US, Splinter Cell, etc.) Are just waiting for the green light.....the age of good video game movies! Move over, superheroes!

I honestly hope so, and I hope that movie is not about Shepard. In other words, it's too hard to make a movie and have people accept this guy's a hero already. People just don't buy it. Hell, I wouldn't buy it, and I love the game. But you see, with GenX's upbringing, we've already seen that movie. Rambo, Commando, Predator, Rocky, Die Hard. I honestly don't mean to pick on the stars of these movies, but... We get it.

I'd much rather as Mass Effect tv series and even then I'd prefer they told the story of the first contact war rather than a rehash of the Shephard story. That said.... I might *might* be convinced of a Shepard movie if they got Cobie Smulders to play her.

I'm just curious how a full novel written by Mac would read. He's not all that articulate for a writer and it shows multiple times in the series (despite the editing) and imagining him having to drive all storytelling via words and not infered context through visuals or tone of voice makes me think of a really shoddy script-quality lol.
I'm genuinely curious and would like to see it. It could finally put to rest what I think of Walters as a writer. His comics were good in terms of characterization sans TIM but he sometimes struggles with voice, but all of the comics had really pointless stories, even nonsense like the "Stand for something join Cerberus" one which ends with Maya Brooks standing before TIM saying "I heard you guys stand for something. I guess I want to stand for something too", and it's like... they stand for "the advancement and preservation of humanity". Did you mean that something perchance? How does that relate to your motivation at all?

Too much would be lost in translation. I'd rather see an original story in the Mass Effect setting. Agreed. If Mass Effect started as a series or a book, then I'd be more open to the idea, but I'm positively spoiled by an interactive sprawl of characters and subplots that I can personalize to some minor degree on top of the protagonist. This might come off as a bit silly, but the movie Shepard and (likely his) companions would all just feel like a sham that I'd have no investment in.
