Yesterday, December 8th, 2016, we lost one of the great pioneers and statesmen of the modern era, a true American hero, John Herschel Glenn, Jr at the age of 95. John Glenn was an astronaut, the first American to orbit the Earth in February of 1962, and one of the Mercury Seven, the original seven astronauts of NASA. Glenn was a Marine Corps aviator, having flown combat missions in both WWII in the Pacific, and in the Korean War. After the war, Glenn graduated from the Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent, Maryland, and served for several years as a test pilot for the U.S. Navy, before being nominated and chosen to attend a basic study for future astronauts. After being selected in the first group of astronauts, Glenn joined his comrades, Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton in America's quest to put humans in space. On February 20th, 1962, Glenn was launched aboard Mercury-Atlas 6 (callsign "Friendship 7") to become the first American to orbit the Earth, circling the earth 3 times in 5 hours. Afterwards, Glenn retired from NASA in 1964, and after serving for several years as an executive for RC Cola and as a Marine Corps Colonel, was elected to the US Senate as the Senator from Ohio (Democrat) where he served with distinction for 25 years. In 1998, Glenn returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery during STS-95, at the age of 77, becoming the oldest person to ever fly into space (as well as setting the record for the longest period of time between spaceflights (36 years) from 1962 to 1998.) After his retirement from the Senate in 1999, Glenn returned to his home state of Ohio, where he continued to advocate for scientific missions and exploration of space for the betterment of not just NASA or the United States, but for the world and humanity as a whole. Senator Glenn, you have been, and always will be, an icon of human achievement and exploration. GODSPEED, JOHN GLENN !

I think this deserves to get back into the front page.
The first American to orbit the earth, and the oldest man in space. Couple that with his political career, and this was a damn fine American.

To a fine American, and to all the fine Americans at NASA, past and present.

“I guess the question I'm asked the most often is: "When you were sitting in that capsule listening to the count-down, how did you feel?" Well, the answer to that one is easy. I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of two million parts -- all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.” ― John Glenn
It's always struck me how people of true integrity, courage and great achievement are some of the most grounded human beings you could ever meet. It is epitomised in that man and his contempories from whatever nationality in that era and every other human being who has folllowed them into space thereafter. Space exploration brings out the best in humanity. The one thing they all have in common is a lack of ego and vanity. They share a certain gravitas, dignity and humility. They are extraordinary "ordinary people".
