Hi good folks, I am going to be shopping for a monitor next week to upgrade my good old 2006 benq 22 inch, 1680x1050, so I was wondering if there are any insights on what are important and minimum parameters, what you like, etc. I am at a desk, about 2.5 feet away from it. I was thinking looking into an ultra-wide, and I also saw a curved version that I thought would be nice.
Would appreciate thoughts, ideas, suggestions!

I'm in a similar boat, debating what to upgrade to... and when. It appears to be up in the air still whether Andromeda will support ultra-wide (21:9). They've said they're looking into it, but it's not for certain. Right now, the only one tempting me is the Acer Predator X34. But with CES 2017 coming up in less than a month, we're all but certain to see some cool new toys, including HDR monitors. But whether there would be any tempting new monitors on sale before MEA's release...? Odds aren't great. But a 144+ Hz, HDR, GSync/Freesnyc 27" or Ultra-wide available even in late 2017 would probably be enough to get me to hold off.

I will have to buy before the end of the year, because of the nature of my benefits at work So it is not clear if Andromeda is going to support the ultra-wide?

Ahhh, then I find this a good site for gaming monitor reviews: www.144hzmonitors.com/best-gaming-monitor-2016/And regarding UW support, they've said they'd hope to, but don't know for sure yet.

At 2.5 ft, I'd stick with 24" personally. That's the size/distance I use. Wouldn't go any larger than 27". Although I believe you can afford to go larger with higher resolution monitors (>1080p), I think 24ish still falls in the sweet spot for that distance. If you can afford one with a low enough response time, consider getting an IPS (in-plane switching) monitor rather than TN (twisted nematic). They're more expensive but have vastly superior color reproduction/viewing angle.

I need to get a new one soon too. Not entirely by choice, my poor Samsung is on its last legs since it is finicky about coming out of stand by now. Probably a capacitor will completely blow up any day now.

Haha, didn't you hear from Aaryn Flynn? If you're not playing on a 4K screen, find one.No, but seriously, if money is no issue, a LG 55" OLED TV isn't a bad choice. I've tried it and the 34ms input lag doesn't bother me, it matters for fighting games or twitchy e-sports online shooters, of which ME:A is neither of course. A bigger issue is getting a beefy enough video card to push 4 times the amount of pixels, a 1200$ Titan is a non-starter but rumor has it we'll see 1080 Ti in January with comparable power and less insane price. I disagree with the 24" at 2.5 feet comment, see the handy graph for reference. But again, this is if money is no issue. If you can specify your budget constraints, that will help to narrow it down.

I use a 32" Samsung at about that distance set at 2.5K resolution. Very nice detail for gaming. A couple years old now so there may be better options.

I have this 1440p IPS monitor: NEC EA274WMiI bought it a year ago. It was pretty expensive and it's not a gaming monitor but my photography friend recommended the brand to me. And I have no regrets. I compared it to a Dell half the price, and while colors were almost identical (impressive for the Dell), the build quality sucked and the strong backlight bleeding was a no-go for me. I even had a replacement sent and it had the same backlight bleeding issues just in a different corner. The NEC is sturdy, can be tilted forward a bit, which is nice. Minimal backlight bleeding. I'm not sure how I feel about the IPS glow. It's super annoying, especially when you sit REALLY close like me. The closer you sit, the stronger the silver tint gets. If you poke your nose at the screen you see nothing but silvery white eventually. With the Dell this happens sooner than with the NEC. And in a dark room the viewing angle is actually AWFUL. Screen turns almost entirely white if you look at the screen from a sharp angle. In broad daylight and when there is little black on screen IPS looks the best. Black looks grayish but that's a limitation of the technology. Unless you have a lot of spare money for a GTX 1080 or two, 4K is ridiculous. Even on 1440p my GTX 1070 goes as low as 30fps when trying to max Witcher 3. And Assassin's Creed Syndicate with all the post processing bling bling got me 23fps!!! Pascal is far from capable of running games at 60fps on higher resolution unless you tweak the settings a bit or get a Titan or something. It's all marketing bullshit. That said, 1440p is extremely pretty. 4K would be even more so, but it's not worth it still. Console is the best option tbh. You pay a shitload for the shiny. If you have the money, buy an OLED 4K TV, I second that. Haven't actually seen one I admit but I'm kind of itchy for one just because for movies. But then I heard the screens are so black they swallow details... no thanks. To sum it up, my recommendation: go for a good 1440p monitor and consider IPS, colors are so amazing. But be aware of the downsides of that technology. 27 inches is the sweet spot for 1440p. Unless you play competitive shooters, don't waste money on 144hz, go for best colors. HDR not worth it yet.

I'll take a look at 27" it is probably what will work for my desk. I must confess I am looking forward to upgrading.
What about curved screens, anyone tried that for games? Or is it usually not supported?

I can't speak for monitors but my LG OLED55C6 model TV has a slight curve. I would personally prefer flat but LG decided to be retarded and put the same price on flat and curved but put weaker processor in the flat version with more input lag. Better luck with next years models.
The image does get a very slight distortion. It might be individual perception thing, I strongly recommend visiting local electronics store for personal impressions before committing to expensive purchases.

I was using a 23" LG monitor. Recently I placed my 27" samsung 1080p tv as my desktop monitor, just to see how a 27" sized screen will work in that viewing distance. Well, it stayed there, haven't moved it.

Plus there aren't very many (if any) desktop monitors out there that support the latest revision of HDR yet, as far as I know. I'd much rather have the fast response times and high refresh rates of a good 1440p or even 1080p monitor than buy a behemoth of a television.
