I’m thinking of starting up Warframe this week, any advice for a new player? The first and foremost advice I'd give to a new player is to take it slow and try not to get overwhelmed and ask for help if you need it, in this thread or in the game's chat. Warframe has quite the initial learning curve and barely any tutorials. It can be a lot to take in at the beginning, it certainly was for me. Don't spend your free starter platinum on anything that isn't an inventory slot. Choose your starter warframe wisely. Getting new warframes is one of the more time and resource (or platinum) consuming activities in the game. There is no sticky cover. Aside from any defensive skills a particular warframe may have, your main ways of staying alive are speed, mobility and an overwhelming offense. Play around for a bit, it's free after all, and see if it's for you. If you like it, let us know and we can get into Tenno Basics 101. Enjoy!

It's the only bottleneck that isn't acquirable with in-game means. (Barring trading - but I consider that meta game). The rest you can do with friends. Just ask for help and it will be granted.

I personally, and can't talk about the other frames, would recommend maybe Excalibur as a starter warframe, since it has the blind ability which will be extremely handy once unlocking new planets becomes a thing. Blinding leaves most enemies exposed to stealth melee attacks that deal massive damage.

Hmm, well I already started with Mag this morning. So far I like it, but I’m not very clear on how I get new stuff. Basically you are supposed to run through the solar map unlocking planet after planet. This unlocks also the stories. To get a new frame there is a map node with a boss on each planet. They have to be beaten and drop 1 of 4 parts (randomly). Gather the mats and craft the new frame.
Weapons can be bought in game store. BP cost in game creds. Gather mats and craft it.
Occasionally this routine is tweaked. You may get a free weapon, parts, or have to do a mission to receive a part. The nodes that unlock next planets frequently give rewards (only once).
Then there are relics, you can collect "keys" to use for doing a special mission. Succeed with the mission and you get a random loot drop for this particular key. They are called relics and these relics drop from certain missions, mostly the endless ones, preferrably the more rare relics drop on the higher levels.
When playing along, you will pick up mods that enemies drop. The drops are specific to certain enemies, you can consult the codex on that, but just play along a bit and collect some. They are the real power spice for your gear.

There is more but I'd rather keep it simple. Only one thing: Plains of Eidolon, PoE, (Earth) has bounties that reward very useful gear and mods for new players. Imo, a good way to get essential and good stuff.
PoE is the more open big map for people to explore. Some say they hate the grind, but I liked to go fyshing for chilling out. + It's spearfyshing so you actually have to aim. Is big aim assit on, tho - for casul scrub like me.

One thing I'd recommend also to save yourself some inventory (and useless grind for materials...) don't bother buying/crafting useless guns, check the interwebs to see which guns are worth using and which ones aren't. Otherwise you'll waste time and inv space on garbage guns.

Hmm, well I already started with Mag this morning. So far I like it, but I’m not very clear on how I get new stuff. I am an expert on Mag bc she's my ultimate waifu. Anyway, 1 is good for crowd control. 2 is good to gather mooks in one area and kill them all. Especially great for Assassinations. 3 is good for AoE and stripping shields like it's no tomorrow, except it's freaking useless against Flesh (aka the Infestation). 4 is okay. I use to spam it until I learned how to play properly, hue. Mag was my first frame.

To all the excellent advice given to you so far, I would like to add the following:
Send in-game friend requests to all the good folks from this thread (most of us are on pc, I think) this will provide you with an invaluable source of knowledge for all the obscure mechanics this game loves to leave unexplained. We all most likely also have a ton of copies of the essential-but-hard-to-come-by mods that are very important for your progression through the star chart, and we'd be happy to provide you with them!
Once you hit mastery rank 4, build yourself a Hek shotgun: it will solve all your offensive woes throughout the star chart
Join a clan as soon as you can - it provides you with access to a number of frames and weapons that are only obtainable there. There is no penalty from joining and/or leaving clans, so feel free to experiment around. I went from a huge 1000 members one, to a 30 members one, and finally created my own.
Knock some quests down! Those provide some lore into the crazy world of the game, but will eventually also expand upon your gameplay options.
Have fun! There are tons of things to do, and collect, and try, and grind in this game. Optimized loadouts will trivialize anything, but most frames and weapons, properly modded, can handle just about anything. Find what you like, and go for it the grind is there, no doubt, but how much of a grind the game is depends almost entirely on you
Welcome to this crazy monster of a game! I hope you'll enjoy it and stick around!

warframe.wikia.com/wiki/WARFRAME_Wikiis excellent resource for anything the game has. A lot of stuff changed over the years and I ofetn consult it to get an idea how a frame or gun or mechanic might work out. Also has drop tables and info on where to go if you need some item or material. Anything can be done solo, but with a team you'll find it will go much easier. There is also chat in game. Frequently some ppl look for a group to farm an item or material. It is advisable to have a "farming frame" at hand, but most don't mind tagging along when the lobby already has the desired frames.

Tennos of the BSN clan!
I remember when I was a wee tenno, all alone and lost, and other tennos, in their magnificent, extravagantly decorated warframes reached out to me and helped me bootstrap my arsenal. I feel the time has come for me to in turn give something back.
As such, I offer to you fine folks the following items:
- Reaper Prime set, a so-so scythe, but vaulted and so either valuable in plat, or providing hard-to-get mastery points;
- Aklex Riven (MR 16, rolled once, poor stats); - Hikou Riven (MR 9, unrolled); - Volnus Riven (MR 15, unranked, 3 rolls + status chance + combo duration - puncture, it basically is a supercharged drifting contact. Very good for a viral/slash build, but I don't like the aesthetic of an otherwise very good weapon); - Snipetron (Vandal) Riven (MR 8, fully ranked, 5 rolls, +144 dmg, +79 multishot, +89 stat duration. The last stat is pretty bad, but the others are very very good; I like the snipetron vandal, mostly due to nostalgia since the weapon pass has kind of buried it, but this riven goes a long way into making it great again, and I only part with it because I got incredibly lucky with another, even better one);
- Twin Basolk Top Bargain* Twin Basolk not included: a riven (MR 10, unrolled), the Rift Strike mod (not very useful, but good for some giggles), and a Carving Mantis stance (polarity not matching - it's a bargain deal after all ); the weapon is not bad, but I have already invested in other dual swords, so I'd rather pass this stuff on to someone who might make better use of it;
- Maroo's Special: a set containing one of each non-sortie Ayatan statues, all fully slotted for your endo and/or decorating needs.
If you are interested in one or more items, post in the thread, or send me a pm. Should more than one person express interest in an item, I will let our old friend RNG pick who will get it. I will leave this offer standing for a few days, up to a week depending on interest. If you know of BSNers who play the game but do not check this thread, by all means spread the word!
I look forward to receiving your ammo drums and pressure points!

Well, I’d be interested in a Warframe besides my starter, any suggestions? The only warframe in Hamletic's generous offer is Valkyr Prime, a heavily armored yet very nimble melee expert. She's at home in the middle of a huge melee mess, especially when equipped with the Eternal War augment. I have a spare Transient Fortitude to offer, goes very nicely with Hamletic's Overextended. Both are so called corrupted mods that greatly enhance one warframe stat while lowering one of the others.

Well, I’d be interested in a Warframe besides my starter, any suggestions?
Generally speaking, there are two types of warframes: primes are considered the "originals", their design lost in time but acquirable through relics; those can be traded by players (all warframes come in 4 parts: blueprint, chassis, systems and neuroptics). Most non-primes are acquired either by defeating bosses (assassination nodes, plus bp for sale in the market), or by completing quests (later frames' bits still drop from specific missions); those are non-tradeable, and must be obtained through gameplay.
The only warframe I am giving away is Valkyr Prime (all items in my previous post have links to the wiki pages, though at least with the theme I use, the link is not obvious), a tank/melee frame. If that's your jam, I'll be more than happy to pencil you in for that one
Otherwise, good early frames are Rhino, a tank/buffer that drops from Venus; Oberon, a paladin/druid themed frame with excellent healing capabilities (bits drop randomly from eximus enemies); Frost, a defensive specialist whose parts drop on Mars. If that's more up your alley, I'd be happy to help you get the pieces and the resources needed to build those! Further frames are available for credits by joining a clan; eg. Volt is an offensive caster, Zephir is a mobile, tanky frame with some cc thrown in for good measure, and Banshee is an awesome glass cannon (I might be biased when it comes to Banshee ). You are welcome to join my clan if you'd like to have access to those. My personal suggestion is to pursue Rhino, simply because he will let you clear the starchart of any problematic node you might encounter - that and his ultimate is to stomp the ground so hard, it stops time - an over-the-top move that basically screams "warframe in a nutshell" to me

I will say I’m a bit frustrated about the quests. I actually tried Warframe way back when it was first released. I couldn’t get into it then, it felt a bit bare and without enough context to it’s action. I’m getting more into it now, but the interesting quests I’ve heard about are locked behind a lot of busywork.

I’m getting more into it now, but the interesting quests I’ve heard about are locked behind a lot of busywork. Vella could comment on this part of new player experience. Not long ago I showed her about what can be done in manouvers and now she already did the final quest. There might be a way to speed it up by having a friend taxi you to the missions before the solar rail nodes? Don't know if that really works.
Anyway, even running straight through the mission nodes to the solar rail ones shouldn't really take too long.
The rail nodes have some challenges to complete that might actually take more effort.
And - as always, anything goes solo, but with 3 ppl at your side it is generally easier. Like the Lua node challenges (I think it's Lua) where you have to beat 3 riddle rooms - many can only be done with teammates. I soloed that challenge and it was a pain to run through the maps hoping for a doable solo riddle room to spawn.
