Here's a band I stumbled upon recently and am enjoying. Their songs are perhaps a little uninspired (not bad, just not anything I haven't heard before more than once), but I can forgive that when they've got a singer as good as this: If only they had awesome music.

I wish I had gotten into GWAR when I was younger but I didn't have much exposure to their music. I think the first time I heard of GWAR was in the Beavis & Butthead game for SNES. I didn't like em when I was younger either, but they're hilarious. It's funny, because I've always thought the ultimate band would be like the Misfits with like Queen's or Kiss' showmanship. But really, come to think of it, GWAR pulled a lot of this off.

I really like Ne Obliviscaris. Progressive metal with a violinist may not sound good on paper but these guys make it work and are all talented musicians. They only have two albums as of right now but I'm looking forward to see what they do in the future. They have a unique sound and with their one vocalist doing death growls and the violinist doing the clean vocals they can blend harshness with beauty. Their album artwork is also awesome. Will definitely be posting more from these guys.

Killing Joke rarely use any double kick in their music (not that they are known for it) but this song does. While it's slow and a bit sludgy, it's one of their heavier songs. The opening riff reminds me of Gojira's song Ocean Planet.

To be honest I was expecting for some Black Metal by judging the beginning of the song, but then it dives into some really varied and unexpected movements full of melody and musical prowess. At times the virtuosity is a bit over the top and the song finished in an atmosphere completely different from the one it started, but well, that is what you get from prog metal.

Most of their music is like that. The song is from their first album Portal of I. As good as it is, it's way too long (around 72 minutes) Their second album Citadel is much better and shorter

Sepultura's Against album is so underrated. Their first album without Max Cavalera, the band recruited Derrick Green on vocals and I think he does an amazing job. This was sort of an end and a beginning. Against carried over a few elements from their previous album Roots all the while starting to go into a more hardcore direction. The album still had a bit of the tribal influence too but this time it was more of Japanese origin and the whole tribal thing in general was slowly faded out on future albums. This record was weird too because they recorded it in different locations around the world (including Tokyo) and most of the music and lyrics were already done before Derrick stepped in. Even the artwork is Japanese influence. Against grew on me over the years and now it has become one of my favorites.
This song sounds like a Motorhead song on steroids and features Jason Newsted doing backing vocals and baritone guitar.
and this track was the one recorded in Tokyo with a Japanese drum group called KODO. It's instrumental only so no vocals.

Since autumn is upon us I decided to break out more black metal from the 90's. I miss the Dimmu Borgir from before 2004 where they sounded much more angry and brutal. Hell, in this album Shagrath sounds like a demon possessed by satan. It's fucking awesome. While my favorite album of theirs lingers between Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, I do feel their best overall sound from a vocal standpoint was Spiritual Black Dimensions.

True, not many bands do tribal elements in their music. When Max left Sepultura he continued the tribal thing with Soulfly. Sepultura phased it out over time but you'll still hear a song or two with a bit of tribal stuff once in a while. An example would be The Bliss of Ingnorants off their latest album.

Dunno how I missed those pics but they're damn funny. I found At The Heart Of Winter to be their best and most consistent album. It's one of those rare ones where every song just works and I don't get a desire to skip any. Each riff and tap serves a purpose to the composition. While Blashykh (Mighty Ravendark) is one of their greatest songs, I find Withstand The Fall of Time to be a masterpiece. They also seem like cool guys too. Here's to hoping they can get back together. Immortal without Abbath is not Immortal. It's wrong.

The only album I own by Immortal is All Shall Fall. I think it was technically their last album as Immortal unless they had some stuff after 2009 but I don't know a whole lot about them or their discography. Anyways, I like it and it's an enjoyable record.

I don't really listen to Red Fang but they have some pretty entertaining videos Been spending the last 20 minutes watching their videos on youtube. Their stuff sounds similar to Mastodon's older stuff.

Immortal is one of the few black metal acts I've gotten into. Not just due to the music since they don't adhere to the idea that black metal somehow HAS to sound as shitty as possible to be trve kvlt and thus acceptable, but the whole black metal scene is generally speaking really fucking dumb, everything is SUPER SRS BSNS, everyone seems incredibly elitist and there's a high concentration of shitty people often promoting some really ugly ideals. At least that has been my experience with the nordic black metal scene in particular, having a couple of friends over the years who have been really into the genre. Immortal by comparison seem like fairly normal guys who write their music, don't take themselves too seriously and are self-aware when putting on the corpse paint and making videos like

How about some saxophones in your metal?
bonus video that's still relevant to the thread since it's the above band's vocalist/saxophone player and Scott Kelly of Neurosis fame:
