Story time! So the first time I really heard true heavy metal music was when I was about 11-12 and I went out with my 2 older brothers into town one night. My oldest brother was out of the house and in college and we were hanging out at his house. We left to get something to eat maybe I dont really remember. But as he was leaving he said "Hold on" and grabbed a CD with an old dude in prison on it. Well the first time I heard the fuckin guitars I was hooked on it.
This CD is the reason I like heavy metal, especially thrash metal. When I was in 8th grade I had a field trip to Washington DC and my parents gave me a money to get food and stuff but I spent it all on CDs and Countdown was one of the ones I bought. They were pissed I spent it all on CDs and looking back I really shouldnt have. I also had to hide countdown because my mom was super religious at the time and took away all of our movies and games that she didnt think the lord would like. Crazy times.

I also had to hide countdown because my mom was super religious at the time and took away all of our movies and games that she didnt think the lord would like. Crazy times. Everyone's got to start somewhere. For me it was Metallica. I started getting into music when I was 13 but my first metal album was Metallica's Load. Got if for my 14th birthday. Shortly after getting that album, Reload was released and the following christmas I got that along with Ozzy's Ozzmosis and The Ozzman Cometh albums. Eventually the following years I would start getting into the whole nu-metal thing with Korn and eventually Limp Bizkit. Oh high school memories. Just this past christmas when I was at my parents, I dug around the closet and found some old cd's from my high school years. This is what I thought metal was in the late 90's early 2000's Ah, the memories............ but now I have to post something extreme to make up for this lameless taste of music of mine from the past

Somebody pointed this out to me the other day... kept me amused for a while: mapofmetal.com/Conclusion: Entombed are way too cool to be pigeon-holed

The only thing that seems missing now is a link to country and classical music through punk and rock?

Late 90s early 00s was Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Zeppelin, and AC/DC, for the most part, followed by nu-metal. My dad gave me Black Sabbath and Paranoid and my buddy gave me copies of Follow the Reaper and Ghost Reveries. Stuck with MDM mostly til a few years ago and was hooked on Bolt Thrower, cavernous DM, and Black Metal (mostly black), although I really like the Black/Hardcore (Crust punk) sound and first/second wave sounding stuff. All hail Quorthon!

If there was one single track that I could pinpoint that marked out my musical taste ever since; this was on a mix-tape (along with Metallica's "... and Justice for All") a friend gave me when I was in school: How did I go from that to:

If there could be a single song to say that got me into metal it would be Four Horsemen from Metallica's Kill 'em All from friends made first year junior high. That band used to take so much heat from people, now they're in movie soundtracks. Justice and One really got them out there.

That was also the song that lead my walkman playlist when doing anything reckless, like dropping into a steep run on a snowboard.
