I don't have a rule. I usually go with the moment or the more story-sense companions. When recruiting Garrus in ME2, for example, I take Grunt and Zaeed with me, since they have both some specific scene/dialogue in the mission. I choose Javik for Thessia in ME3. Garrus when rectruiting Samara. Etc.
Othervise, I usually take with me my favoutie companion and the LI.

For the first playthrough, I'll just mix it up... sometimes selecting for the job at hand and sometimes just by flipping a coin (or some other means of random selection).

I usually have my romance and my bestie for most missions. In ME it was Kaidan and Garrus; ME2 was Thane and Garrus; ME3 was Garrus and Kaidan or James/Javik/Liara until I got Kaidan back. The first playthrough all companions get used until I get to know them all, then the ones that annoy me stay at camp/base etc. Poor EDI, the only mission she ever came on was the one I was forced into. 😁 *´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•` ¤ Mass Effect Andromeda

Constantly switch. Everyone gets a turn!
Having any squadmate sit permanently on the bench doesn't make sense within the story, so I normally go with two different squadmates for every mission. The only exceptions are when it makes more sense within the story to bring a certain squadmate. In that case I may use a squadmate that was on the team for the last mission, rather than replace him or her.
I also like to experience a little of every character's content.

I didn't answer the poll, because until I get the game, I can't. XD
As for my track record though, ME1: I used Garrus, Tali and Wrex for most of my missions. ME2: Garrus, Mordin, and Legion. ME3: Garrus, Javik, and Tali.
Garrus was always on the team. I think the only time he wasn't was in ME2 during the suicide mission because I didn't trust anyone else to lead the other fire team. He was my favorite character, by a large margin, and even if he hadn't been a LI, I don't think it would have changed me choosing him every single time.
If MEA has a character I like just as much as I liked Garrus, then I'll probably always bring them and switch out my other choice between other characters I like. If I like several characters equally, I may do more varied teams. If I hate everyone... well... let's hope not. XD

i'll choose my favourites and those who fit better for the task/mission, for example if i know i will fight synthetics i'll bring an engineer, or against giant enemies, a krogan, we still have t see what class are the squadmates and they must work as a team along side the pathfinder

I guess option two? I try to keep a party that compliments how I'm playing.

I always take my Li. The other spot is the "switch-out"; I pick whoever I want for that mission. Usually it will be someone who compliments the other characters in the squad but they also have to be someone I like too or I won't pick them. For example: I always had Garrus in my party from the first game through to the last and I'd have Wrex in 1, Samara, Thane, Kasumi, or Zaeed in 2, and Liara in 3. The other characters I didn't want to bring along, even if they could offer combat advantage.
Same thing applies to any game I can pick my party in. I adjust my play style to accommodate them and it has made for some really interesting challenges.

I pick two that I like the most and stick with them through the whole game. Unless it's going to be like DAI where none of the companions were really likable to me and I spent the whole game changing those that came with me.

I chose that I'd keep one the same and switch out the other. Really, though, it'll depend. I have a tendency to keep the squadmate I romance with me (assuming I romance a squadmate and not some other being who doesn't come with me) at all times. If I'm not romancing a squadmate it could end up that I change both up.

I will use humans the most. I tend to do this as well, though sometimes I'll choose someone different-usually Krogan or Turian-to replace one. It makes the most sense to me to go with humans this time because each Pathfinder crew is scouting for its own species and I figured each species would have its own race-centric specialists who are best suited to choose a home planet for themselves. An exception would be a local Andromedan who knows the area and customs better than the visitors. That said, at first, I do like to try them all if for nothing else but the banter.

For ME1 & ME3 I almost always had Kaidan with me. If he was available, he was there What I'm saying is I bring my LI or favorite squadies with me, as opposed to selecting who would be better suited. For the 2nd spot I do indeed try to get a squadie who has some biotic bonus (Liara in ME3 for example), since I always play biotic. After LI/favorite chararacter, if the mission has some sort of relevance for certain characters, I do bring them, since it makes for extra dialogue and stuff (even if another character would be better). ME2 was a bit meh for me, since I disliked most squadies, and had no likeable human squadie. In fact I disliked the humans most in that game lol (as in Miranda and Jacob | Jacob was both meh and irritating, which... not a great combo | Miranda was absolutely aggravating for me; not only the concept, which was dumb, but everything about her, so yeah, fun times). Also I'm biased towards the human characters, so I'll probably gravitate towards them... We'll see. It depends on what characters Bioware comes up with

The first play through I swap out characters for whatever skills are needed. If I do a second play through I swap out characters for the dialogue.

I'll probably swap them out frequently until I figure out who is who and how well they work with me. If I find one who I like better than the rest I might take them along more on other play throughs.
