Ah yes, the holidays. A time of sharing, caring and good will towards men. A time of pretty lights and thoughtfully decorated trees. A time of gifts and laughter.
Or so we would hope.
This thread is for those that have had some rough holidays. Whether it be due to stress, work, family, I'd love to see some stories. Stories about church services that have gone wrong are fine too. Or a story about that mad dash for a gift at the last minute.
However, as a mod and as a user, please refrain from religious debates. Posts that debate about the secular versus religion meanings of the holidays will be removed. Let's keep it friendly.
I'll start off by sharing one of the worst Thankgivings I ever had. I was at my parents house and my brother was there with his wife and child (who was in diapers at the time.) Normally my brother and dad get along very well. Well, my dad and my brother had had a few drinks and started debating about gun control. My folks don't see eye-to-eye on the subject with us kids and it got ugly fast.
I'm standing in the kitchen, chatting with my mom, when I hear yelling from the dining area. My dad and brother had gotten in each other faces. The baby was trying to sleep and I figured I'd calmly jump in. I suggested we go downstairs to avoid waking the baby. Boy, was that a mistake. It was like sticking my hand between two fighting dogs.
Without hesitation, my brother went, "Thanks, Nat.* Thanks a lot." My father yelled at me as well for getting involved. I was shocked into tears and went downstairs. I was quite upset and wanted to go home. I needed to chill out first. My husband was livid but he was more concerned about me than he was fighting with my family.
A few minutes later, my dad and brother came downstairs looking hang-dogged. Apparently my mom chewed them both out for being belligerent. Then sharply reminded them that baby was sleeping. My brother and dad apologized. I accepted, but left very soon after.
Now we have a "no-politics" policy for the holidays. Still, that wasn't a fun Turkey Day.
* Obviously not my real name.

Coming home from my Grandma's farm on Christmas Eve one year, our Suburban broke down in the cold and we had to have my uncle tow us home. Us kids all thought it was a fun memory! We also were amazed that my hot tempered dad was able to keep his cool. Me and my sister were still hyper once we got home, however, and were giggling in our room. Our dad's stress finally got to him and he whacked us on the butts with his shoe and told us to get to bed. Merry Christmas.
A few years later, all I wanted for Christmas was a Nintendo 64. My grandma was going to get one for me, but my mom informed me that my dad didn't want me to have a Nintendo, over fear that I'd always be on it and get "fat." Well, my grandma had already bought it for me, so she ended up giving it to one of my cousins. I was old enough to figure out how Christmas worked by then. If that wasn't enough, my parents took us over to my cousin's house on Christmas day to visit them, and made me play my cousin's brand new N64 with them.
My dad kinda sucks.

Horror story? Mmmmm. hahaha
One Christmas I spent with my Aunt, Uncle and cousins. I took my youngest cousin out to Toys 'R' Us. I had her pick a toy that she would like. She grab one that made a lot of noise. Lets say my Aunt wasn't very happy with that. She gave me the evil eye. She still does from time to time after 20 plus years for that.

Was at my aunt and uncles place for Christmas, was Christmas eve. Started to have pains in my tummy, finally had to tell them I needed to go home, about an hours drive. Things got worse, had to call my buddy about 10 pm at night to drive me to the hospital. Spent the night on a gurney in the hall way about 10 feet from the ambulance in door, it was -25 c that night. The Dr's kept starting to check on me then get called away for a bigger emergency.
My appendix was ready to explode, so finally after some hours they whipped me into surgery around 3 or 4 am in Christmas day.

My appendix ruptured on Valentine's Day my senior year of high school! My parents wouldn't believe me until I was crawling on the floor saying I felt like I was going to die. Even then they took me to the doctor's office first. Big surprise....I had to stay in the hospital for two weeks instead of one day had my parents listened to me.... Worst pain ever.

I had my appendix out on my 16th birthday. My mother had made lasagna, which was very good, but after the dishes I had to excuse myself to go lie down. My Dad came up to see how I was. After talking a bit he probed my abdomen with his finger and I almost blacked out. So I spent the night in the hospital and had surgery the following day. Of course I had my tonsils out on my tenth birthday, so there's that.

The appendix was still no where near as bad as my nose surgery but its not a holiday story though.

I don't have the energy to recount the details, but this was lake effect snow at its most epic. Those were taken fifteen minutes apart, as were these: By the next day, visibility was about 15 feet! As a result, I was trapped in Watertown, New York for two days while on my way to Florida. It wasn't really a nightmare, tho'.

One year my husband and I decided to head up to Wyoming to visit his family. For those that don't know about Wyoming, the weather there is rough. The wind never stops blowing (it's usually at least 2-4 mph at the minimum) and they get the brunt of almost every artic front that cruises south along the Rockies. We got the bright idea to go for Christmas right after a blizzard had ended for the Rocky Mtn. Region. We had gotten 2.5' of snow in 2 days, and Wyoming had gotten hit harder. Going up was a little icy, but not too bad. Coming home though... We're cruising down the interstate, doing just under the speed limit due to road conditions. All of a sudden we came upon a huge snowdrift right in the lane with no time to react. My husband drives full-sized pickups and this thing covered the entire windshield. My husbnd just kept the wheel steady and hit the wipers once we were through. We were fine, but scared shitless. We haven't gone up to WY for the holidays ever since. <hugs of sympathy> I've never had surgery at all, unless getting my wisdom tooth removed counts. Which I don't think it does.
