Augh! Fucking hell. She's fucking gorgeous! Why can't they just pop her in as a preset? Even just a few extra presets who look as good as her would be enough to placate me at this point!

I tried my best to create at least a decent character but I could not do it, I'l have to choose default character Not a good start I made one that looks a lot like me, and I was satisfied with it, but then realized I wanted to customize my twin too but said screw it and chose defaults so I could just get on with the game since we only have 10 hours. Literally none of the presets for Sara looked anything like my custom Scott and figured I'd have my work cut out for me if I wanted to at least have her resemble her twin brother.

Pretty sure all Asian presets look very generic... they're like the kind of average looking people you see when you walk outside to buy grocery. But at the first sight with the male presets... I really thought they look like loan sharks.
Mass Effect character customization never was like Dragon Age but honestly, I don't think they change anything. The presets are the exact same mesh of eye/brow/lips/nose types already available in the trilogy. Forcing everyone to do minor adjustment on already custom face is ridiculous.

I really want to see someone to mess around with the 2# female face, only because I think she's supposed to be caucasian? Alec seemed to be if you choose her so I'd like to know what she looks like from the side and how pale I can make her...also how narrow I can make her face *looks at 8's lovely face structure and cries*. I tried like hell to make #2 a pretty white gal (you can get a fairly pale skin option on that one). She looked...OK in the CC. But in game? She looked terrible. I mean...bad. Really bad. Like, malformed. So no, you cannot make her face narrow because it makes her look non-human from the side. Also, she has MAJOR wrinkles on her forehead when she animates in game. I tried to take a screenshot, but it crashed everything (sorry!). So then I loaded up and did the default Sarah. That was just awful. The edges of her eyes are pale blue and she looks like such a damned derp. And her skin texture is beyond icky. I mean, she looks sick and pasty. Uggg! The, after spending 1/2 hr to 45 minutes trying to make a decent gal outta the blond one (#5, I think?), and messing around with the only other option that has a fair skin color (the one with the giant eyes, don't recall the number), I gave up trying to make an attractive Caucasian. In my opinion, it is not possible in this game. I am now rolling a #1 Asian gal...with red hair and green eyes (hey...it's the future). She is the only one with decent looking skin, a pretty mouth, and a well-proportioned face. She looks great and fits the voice well, so I am going to roll with that as my canon. Disappointed...but at least the game is pretty good! And people complained that we couldn't play as aliens in Mass Effect. Now we only can't play as humans. Bioware listening to fan feedback at their best.

OK. Spent some time in the CC. My thoughts: The CC is more limited in scope than I realized. The lack of mouth/nose/eye shapes is obviously the biggest blow to customization. I felt limited in hair colors since we cannot change eyebrow colors at all. If a hairstyle is too high on the forehead, there is not much to be done to close the gap. The eyebrows and eyes can only go up so far. The ears can't be adjusted at all. I do not think it's possible to modify the CC in a way that we want because once I started playing the game, I could see that the animations were better with fixed features. Yes, there were derpy moments, but I think that applies to all of the presets and the default Sara. There are also some nice moments, too. Anyway, I ended up going with preset #5. Despite the lack of customization (apart from makeup and hair), she really does look like a real person and blends in with the NPCs around her. A few non-spoiler screenshots from the game:

I mean, bleh, it's sort of painfully restrictive. And I'm not thrilled. But I think I can work with in. -cracks knuckles-

Well...I gotta say that after watching a couple more CC videos, I'm gonna change my opinion slightly. I still think there's room to make some distinct Ryders within each preset...but most likely not as many as I originally thought.
Now, full disclosure, I'm not too terribly fussed about making "me" or a celebrity look-a-like. I've always enjoyed making a custom character in games, 'cause it personalizes the experience more than using the default, but I never really cared if "my" Shepard or Inquisitor or whoever looked like anyone else's. But even though I don't share the same desire to create "me" or a more unique avatar, I can kinda understand why people are upset. I think some people take that too far, maybe, but that's not really for me to judge.
I still think this CC will wind up giving us some really good looking Ryders, and that's mainly what I look for in a CC, but I'm coming around to the opinion that many of those Ryders will be less than unique. It's not gonna affect my enjoyment of the game, but I hope more options are patched in relatively soon, for those who DO care more about this than I do.

I never saw a good Asian Shep in ME without mods and there weren't any real Asian options for the DA series. So an authentic looking Asian preset for MEA is a rarity to me, and they certainly don't look generic or "average" (unattractive) to me.

I feel like female preset #1 will be used tons, it already has. Since I was going to make Asian character anyways that's pretty much what I'll be using as well so Mandy will look like tons of other characters, but at least she won't look awful.
Also I'm pretty much forced to pick #3 for male Ryder. I guess I can make it work. I'm not happy with CC at all and I'd like to be, CC's are major feature for me and I have bought game before based on CC (Saint Row), but I can make it work.
BTW did anyone post here yet video about how Alec Ryder's face works? Abilitydrain did video about it:
So basically it's completely based on what preset we pick.

In fact (is there any way to check post history in here? If there is a way you can check mine) I've stated in this board on record that I really thought the 1st preset for FemRyder looked really pretty and that I would most definitely pick that one for my 1st playthrough. What I meant by "generic" was at the very least she looked perfectly fine and human-like, unlike many other presets who looked like their face got face-planted first into a surface of a planet when they appear in the game.

That video helped me figure out what was bothering me with those presets of Dad/Alec to look like YourRyder, his skin becomes like...baby smooth, he looks his age to a degree but it's like Alec had some fix-up done to his face (if that makes sense? Not sure I worded that as I wanted)...and then he loses his beard, which is a bit jarring.

That MP character looks quite good and definitely would be good canvas to start with if she was a preset. She has quite "neutral" facial features when presets that are based on real humans don't- their features are quite distinctive which is not good for preset usually (this is why I always started in Sims 2 with preset #1 or #2 cause they were neutral and could be easily molded).

So I've spent a good bit of time with the CC, and... I'm not sure how to feel about it.
At most, it's... serviceable. But only being able to thinly adjust set-in features of the presets turned out to be even more limited than I thought, what with how few options there are. Being able to select facial features regardless of preset would have been a huge improvement, and that goes for skin complexions/tone as well.
I also don't really understand what they were going for with the makeup options? A lot of really bizarre patterns for eyeshadow, lipstick, and blush, while maybe only one or two "normal" options for each set. I think they knew how bare bones the CC was, and tried to overcompensate with a lot of ridiculous cosmetic options to hide the fact.
Hair options are okay, I honestly don't expect much from BioWare in this arena, so I can work with what they have. Yikes at some of the lighter hair color options though.
The one feeling I came away with overall, was that I couldn't create my Ryder. Sure, I worked with what was given and made something decent. But from watching her in the cutscenes, she just didn't feel like my Ryder (auto-dialogue also doesn't help, but that's another issue entirely).
