I'm more interested how they'll call themselves. For example "Initiative" is fine name for an expedition, but not for something which pretends to be official government.

Maybe they were named by the observatory and astronomers at the Nexus before you get the mission to explore them....

Maybe they have named their own galaxy the milky way and ours andromeda.

This would be amusing, since they don't speak English. Which would mean that some humans working on the English side of the universal translator decided that the insulting name for themselves should be "milkies."

After reading your post I decided to look up what the Milky Way had been called in other languages, and some of them are interesting...


Chinese: 銀河 "Silver River"

Chuvash: Хуркайӑк ҫулӗ "Way of the Gray goose" (Several northern cultures named it after migratory birds, after observations that the bird's migration followed it's course)

Hungarian: Hadak Útja "The Road of the Warriors", from a myth (historical)

Irish: Bealach na Bó Finne "The Fair Cow's Path"

Irish: Claí Mór na Réaltaí "Great Fence of the Stars"

Iroquis: "Great Sky Road"

Japanese: 天の川 Ama no Gawa "River of Heaven"

Navajo: Yikaisdaha "That Which Awaits the Dawn” (after the observation that there was only one time during the year when the Milky Way aligned perfectly with the horizon. That time was in January just before dawn.)

Scottish Gaelic: Slighe Chlann Uisnich "The path of the children of Uisneach" from celtic mythology

Slovene: Rimska cesta "The Roman Road", because pilgrims followed it when traveling to Rome
