Oh, I know there are plenty of mods...
But I was going vanilla, and did a fest of creating every race/gender combos to create a character for each background. I ended up with two Human nobles, because my first character was an Elven Mage.
Overall, my impressions were:
Tattoos applications were the best I have ever seen, but I missed scarring.
Holy cow, the Dwarven females are really pretty in this game! I think my dwarven female was my best female from the lot. I did not like the look of the Elven females, and Human females were Okay, but did not really strike me either way. Dwarven ones though, OMG.
Human males - I fought and fought, but I could not make my favorite oriental style human. Ah, well. In the end I did not mind the result, but want to remake it to look more like Duncan. Also needs a slightly more neutral stubble color, because it looks too dark in the game. At least it did in the Estate. Male dwarves and male elves were great. Would not mind a few more creative beard types for the dwarves.
The hairstyles, as ever is the worst part of any character creators. Save for obvious texture problems, I would not have minded more interesting braiding/beading/feathers/flowers, as it seemed to have fit the setting.
EDIT: forgot to add: that dark background in the character creator? Ouch. need different light conditions, if possible. Very hard to get the skin shade right, they all look way pale in the game.

The character creator is why I started modding. Female hairstyles are, in my opinion, a bit lacking as well as eye colours. Also, there are mods that tweak the arms for elves and dwarves and make them a little more appealing.
I agree with you about the dwarves. After some moderate modding I could also get elves to where I wanted them. Human males have never really wound up being very appealing to me in game.
The main problems I have with appearance in DAO are what happens after the creator. To sum up: Boob plates and mage hats.

I found I had the worst time with human males and either gender elf. I agree, the dwarves were the easiest to get looking good with no mods.

Boob plates were okay, but those hats were, indeed, exceptionally badly done, imo. I wish they had circlets like in SWTOR.

1) The dark skin in this game doesn't look right to me. 2) The elves in the game just look like humans with pointy ears. Outside of that I don't mind how they look. 3) Even on big screen tv, I can not tell what my character's eye color is until later in the game. I thought my recent guy's eyes were light blue during character creation, turns out they were dark green the whole time. 4) The hair is difficult for me because I keep thinking, "Yeah that's Jowan's hair. That's Zevran's hair. That's Teagan's hair."

A lot of the modded hair styles seem over-elaborate. Many of them are pretty, but I just can't immerse myself in a Warden that would need to either spend two hours styling her hair or have an army of hairdressers. Admittedly the Tranquil mage looks like he could rock a curling iron, but one mage does not an army make.

That is basically the thing for me: I think the modded hair is lovely and very well-done but I just can't see them working with my characters especially given the ones I usually play.

AHahaha some of the wardens created via mods(I can't use mods because I'm on the console)gave me that impression.

The only thing I've liked about Morrigan was her hair. Of course, that's the only one unavailable to the PC. Go figure.

I think the only character creation mod I have is one for skin tones. In general I think the lighting in there is the biggest problem I have with it.

I agree, all the dwarves are sexy. My biggest problem with the CC in Origins is that any skin color darker than Zevran's starts to look purple. And I hate the boob window on the female rogue armor.

I find it amusing that this is the only game I've encountered where dwarves look way sexier than elves.
It has taken me a while, but I've been able to create both human noble male and female to my liking. I cannot say the same for my elf mage. She looks like a stretched out ghoulish thingy. The dwarf commoner I've made didn't annoy me, but my criteria for him didn't require him to look hot, just badass.
For females, there is only one hairstyle which I approve of. The rest is so meh that I've even considered the bold option on a girl. Might look interesting on a mage.
I find it interesting that this game has a lot of shades for the amber eyes too.

I think dwarf females are super cute. I haven't played a dwarf male yet but I am just not good at making males in any race. I've made human and elf males before and they just don't look right to me so I play female wardens more often than males. I get their face proportions all wrong, so I stick to females.
