ok, insane fangirl longer post, feel free to avert your eyes.
I make no secret of my opinion that Babylon 5 is the best sci fi ever done. I have a spare set of the complete series that I hand out to anyone willing to take them, always trying to expose friends who missed it, either because they were too young, or because of it was a challenge to find when it originally aired.
The first season is rough - I almost bailed after the pilot aired, but two things kept me interested: casting changes and JMS. On the program, it was the dawn of the Third Age of Mankind, but in the real world, it was the dawn of the Internet in Everday Hands: the World Wide Web. And JMS was there, daily, engaging his audience. Yep, in addition to creating the show, producing the show and writing 92 of 110 total episodes of the show, Joe was spending hours almost every day visiting various bulletin boards and groups to talk to us about why his show was worth our time. He was articulate, intelligent, funny, tough and thoroughly worth reading. I honestly don't know how he survived those years: he must need little sleep. It was and remains an unprecedented feat. Other creators have engaged their audiences since, but none have done it as consistently or well, imho.
Also the premise of watching a show with an arc that was entirely planned out, so that each episode was a puzzle piece was truly intriguing. Little things like naming the season and having a signature episode to anchor each one really captured my imagination. So I stuck around through clunkers like "Soul Hunter" and "TKO" as well as a lead I really didn't like. (O'Hare)
And was rewarded almost immediately. Think back to those first four episodes of season two: Points of Departure, Revelations, The Geometry of Shadows, A Distant Star... sublime sadness, soaring humor and scary shadows... not to mention the chemistry of all the cast members really starting to click. The show was truly delivering on its promise, and it only got better from that point until the end of Season 4.
My favorite character is Londo. His character arc is breathtaking. I feel that Peter Jurasik and Andreas Katsulas did some of the finest acting ever seen on ANY television program, much less a sci fi show: it's a shame they didn't receive the accolades they deserved outside of the sci fi community. But Londo? He's just so damn complex. It's rare, I think, to see a character realize they've doomed themselves.
He spends most of the first season feeling himself to be the undeserving butt of a big cosmic joke. As power, and more importantly respect is dangled in front of him, he see himself the great hero he always believed he was. Warnings like this matter little in the face of this justice: In the oh so brilliant "The Geometry of Shadows" were get to hear Elric (YES! Micheal Ansara and OMG how cool were the technomages???)
There is a moment in "The Coming of Shadows" where Londo just broke my heart - he sees what could have been but KNOWS what he just did, and how it will destroy everything that might have been built:
That episode ranks at the top of my list, if only for that moment.
Ivanova would be my second favorite character. If she'd been part of season five, she might've edged Londo out. I was really looking forward to seeing her run the station outright, be more at odds with Sheridan because of that, and see how she coped with Marcus's sacrifice. I always felt a bit cheated, there - to loose a character I adored and have her bail seemed like a waste to me. Like Delenn, she has some KILLER speeches, this being another OMG moment for me in the series
Let's face it, JMS writes women very, very well.
Garibaldi and I share a love of Daffy, and he was so very heartbreakingly human, always.
Even the non-arc focused eps rank high on my list: Gropos, Comes the Inquisitor, The Deconstruction of Falling Stars, Day of the Dead (go Gaiman) are really good television. Above all, the universe JMS created is more interesting to me than most other sci fi, I dig his alien races, the back story, the new direction. For me, BioWare's Mass Effect has been the only other IP that captured my imagination in this way.
And yeah, I wanted to be able to tell the Reapers to "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY GALAXY" Just sayin'
I've devoured all the posts I've read in this thread - you guys picked great stuff to talk about, was nodding my head and saying yes yes yes through each post! I'm a gonna try and do some replies later today, because you guys are smart and funny and cool and I'M SO HAPPY THERE IS A B5 thread!!!
and...
"you... look absolutely gorgeous in purple!"

*stuff I broadly agree with snip*
For me, BioWare's Mass Effect has been the only other IP that captured my imagination in this way.
For me, ME and B5 have a lot in common: - Station on which the races of the galaxy meet for diplomacy
- Pre-existing FTL network of unknown origin
- Mysterious ancient races
- Humanity new in the galaxy, almost gets wiped out in catastrophic war.
- Iconic ship a collaboration between races.
I always think that ME is a bit like a mix of B5 with the organic vs synthetic themes of Battlestar Galactica.

Having only watched the series and all of the TV movies, and Crusade only a few years ago I must admit that I thought it was good but great. Some of it watching other series like Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Torchwood, Dr. Who, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Farscape and not to mention Mass Effect Trilogy all of which stripped mined of a lot of material that Babylon 5 covered and IMHO did it better and not to mention JMS' comic book series Midnight Nation which IMHO is his best work in any media.
I think overall it was a good series (the S5 episode "A View From the Galley" was my favorite) but looking at it fresh eyes, I think it's at best an above-average show with big ambitions that just didn't work for me. In the end it just didn't wow me like I thought it should. I think Crusade was better and I generally thought The Legend of the Rangers was just plain stupid fun and Babylon 5: The Untold Tales should have been left untold.

Kind of hard to pick favorite characters as the show have a lot of good ones. G'Kar and Londo with their complex relationship was awesome, Ivanova funny and a badass and so on. Could probably say something good about most of them.

And yeah, I wanted to be able to tell the Reapers to "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY GALAXY" Just sayin' Well yeah, that's the thing, as I'm watching it, I'm like "this is Mass Effect, more or less". Less of course because that's what Mass Effect should've been. The cycles, the greater unknowable powers trying to "guide us". And the solution, yeah it's not straightforward or as macho as some would maybe like. But you know what the difference is? It was built up!! Everything fit, there was nothing out of left field, everything was planned and executed beautifully (if a little rushed because no one escapes executive meddling). I'm watching it and I'm thinking why didn't you take more notes Bioware?? Oh and those season four and five finales. Deconstruction of Falling Stars is everything I want for the world, Sleeping in Light is everything I want for the characters. My God...

Firstly, my Tauren Druid is named Londomoolari.
Secondly, anyone else get the B5 reference in Interstellar?

Thirded. I wanted to yell them [Reapers] out of the galaxy as well. Instead, I just got to blow them up, but I did get to yell at the Quarians....
Another favorite episode: War Without End, and learning the meaning of "a Minbari not born of Minbari."

So I stuck around through clunkers like "Soul Hunter" and "TKO" as well as a lead I really didn't like. (O'Hare) Great post! Allow me to elaborate on how I feel about the excerpted portion (regarding O'Hare): I get the impression that it goes without saying in this thread, but *spoilers ahead!* (I mean, it's not like we haven't spoiled the crap out of the series at this point... but, for whatever reason, it makes me feel better to add that here. I'm complicated.) Season one was awkward. It felt like JMS was still finding his way, that perhaps other writers brought different perspectives on some characters that clashed, and that the network was still ultimately in control (as would be the case until the end of season two, when they stopped trying to manipulate the story... mostly). The biggest problem with season one was Sinclair. O'Hare didn't do a bad job in my mind, at least, not so much as there was too much going on with Sinclair. That character was just too important, and at the crossroads of too many major story elements. He was the survivor of the Battle of the Line; he was/is/will be the most important figure in Minbari history (as we know it in the series); he becomes Ranger One; and, he's in charge of Babylon 5. And he has to have the personality and skills to back up each and every one of those points -- it's too much for one character! Near the end of season one I start to question if there is any problem he can't overcome through his superior tactics, or in hand to hand combat, or with his ace Star Fury skills, or diplomatically, or philosophically, or legally! His failure at the end of the first season isn't even really his failure, because the issues were beyond his control. With Sinclair's departure, his roles are split among different characters in the series (the One becomes three, as it were... more like five), and we don't see another super character of his ilk again until Lorien (and at least he has an excuse for being super). What used to be Sinclair's roles/traits got split among Sheridan, Delenn, Ivanova, Garibaldi, and Sinclair, giving space for the cast to shine. It's possible that someone else might have been able to do a better job portraying the character of Sinclair, but my problem wasn't with O'Hare as much as it was with the character itself. My biggest disappointment with the loss of Sinclair was that we also lost Catherine Sakai, who I am sure was being set up to be captured by the Shadows. I think JMS recovered well enough with Anna Sheridan, but with the additional history that we had with Sakai I think she would have made for a more interesting villain. None of this is to say that I wasn't shocked with the abrupt replacement of Sinclair with Sheridan at the start of season two, either.

I wonder if any one here is aware of the Free Space 2 Babylon 5 project conversion several years ago. I play Free Space 2 and it's a great space sim that still looks good today. Volition Corporated was not able to produce a sequel so they released the source code, allowing fans to continue to build their respective stories, etc with FS2. Some created B5 stories with it.

About the switch between Sinclair and Sheridan- if that hadn't happened I may never have started watching the series.
My friend gave me B5 when he put in my second HD in my laptop a year or two ago. I made note of it but beyond "ehh, I'll watch it later" I never gave it much thought. It would've likely remaind buried on there if I hadn't spotted a poster for season two while randomly browsing one night and went "huh, Bruce Boxleitner's in this?" I love TRON (if that's not almost as blatantly obvious as my B5 identification), so I was curious enough to give it a shot.
Between Sinclair and Sheridan I'd have to say I prefer the latter but maybe that's also partly because of what Vormav was saying. Sheridan came in as a no nonsense military commander and didn't also try to be a man with a mysterious past and an esoteric destiny at the same time. It also helped that they were firmly on the ball by season 2 whereas both cast and crew were still feeling things out and getting in the swing of things for a good chunk of season 1. When Sinclair came back I didn't bat an eye because I think he fit his new more focused role really well.
Though I too missed Catherine Sakai after season 1. And speaking of similar replacements how about the switch from Talia to Lyta? I loved Talia and kept waiting for them to bring her back. Lyta grew on me eventually as well, but I always found Talia more alluring and felt she would've handled the later seasons' situations a lot better (especially the Vorlon doomsday device stuff).

I'm kind of jealous of people who only just came to B5. I'd like the thrill of watching seasons three and four for the first time to be fresh in my mind instead of a twenty year old memory. I'll have to re-watch my box sets. I don't think I've done it this decade.

Lyta grew on me eventually as well, but I always found Talia more alluring and felt she would've handled the later seasons' situations a lot better (especially the Vorlon doomsday device stuff). With how much effort JMS put into seeding later events as early as possible, I think we can make certain assumptions about how Talia would have played out had Andrea Thompson stayed. I don't think she would have been a Vorlon doomsday device they way Lyta was, but instead would have developed the power(s) she gained from Jason Ironheart in Mind War. There were cracks beginning to show in her relationship with Psi Corps, so it's conceivable that Talia would have been supportive of the renegade B5, and effectively taken Lyta's role with more emphasis on her ties to the Corps instead of to Kosh. It's easier to see that happening, too, if what I recall is true: that JMS had always intended for Talia to have the sleeper personality, but the discarded interaction between Talia, Kosh, and Abbut ( Deathwalker), where Kosh apparently used the interaction to make a backup personality of Talia, would have effectively saved Talia from the Corps. I do know that JMS had established a trapdoor for each character, should the actors not be able to continue the role for whatever reason -- that's in one (or more) of the DVD commentaries for the set I have. I just wish I remembered where I heard or read that comment about Kosh saving Talia. It makes me wonder how keeping Talia would have changed the dynamic with respect to Garibaldi and Bester (I don't think I'd want that to change). Perhaps Talia and Lyta were effectively interchangeable past certain transition points? Meh, I liked them both.

The only character switch that bothered me was Ivanovna to Lochley. In the other cases I liked the replacement as much as the original, but I had so much invested in Ivanovna by the end of season four that seeing her suddenly replaced by the annoying woman from Lois and Clark was really jarring.

The trapdoor planning was genius. Honestly I wish more shows were that well though out. Yes Talia's empowerment came from Ironheart but with the later reveal that telepaths were due to Vorlon tampering to begin with, as well as Kosh restoring her backup she still could've been tied to the Vorlons the same way. On the other hand, the doomsday weapon stuff was season 5 which was meddled with quite a bit IRL so who knows what the original plan might've been? I was comparing their characters more. Talia seemed more confident and self-reliant for most of her run whereas Lyta was more skittish and afraid. Of course that could be attributed to their differing circumstances- Lyta was on the wrong side of the law more and had been touched by a Vorlon, whereas Talia spent most of her time still with the Corps and Ironheart was a lot more familiar to her even transcended than Kosh was to Lyta. Plus there's the Control personality that might've influenced Talia subconsciously. Still even if we compare closer circumstances- Talia protecting the underground railroad for telepaths vs any of Lyta's actions pre-Byron, Talia still comes across as having more agency even though she's clearly scared, compared to Lyta who mostly just does what she's told. Of course, that's not a knock on Lyta. She's had more jarring experiences earlier in her career than Talia has. And I really would've wanted to see her in action in the events after season 5. All that planning with Garibaldi and then the Telepath War... probably the biggest crime of or against this franchise is we never got to see the Telepath War.

The only character switch that bothered me was Ivanovna to Lochley. In the other cases I liked the replacement as much as the original, but I had so much invested in Ivanovna by the end of season four that seeing her suddenly replaced by the annoying woman from Lois and Clark was really jarring. I really didn't like Lochley in the beginning of Season 5. She had no personality, was way too uptight, and, of course, she wasn't Ivanova. My opinion of her changed quite a bit, though, after watching Day of the Dead. Her encounter with ghostZoey explained why she was the way she was and made her character make sense. That episode turned her into a person for me. Would have liked to see Ivanova's reaction to Byron and the other telepaths though. Ah, so many "only if's"! Have you read the Psi Corps trilogy? Its time frame spans the discovery of the first human telepaths to Garibaldi's final confrontation with Bester many years after the end of the show. It's not the same as a whole season/series devoted to the Telepath War, but it definitely wrapped up a lot of things the show left unanswered. I also really enjoyed Peter David's Legions of Fire (Centauri trilogy). Been ages since I've read them. I also have the Technomage books, but haven't read those yet (I've heard they aren't as good as the other two trilogies and have a few lore inconsistencies). Edited for horrible quote formatting.

I'm not sure I actually liked her until she showed up in Crusade, though; I was really looking forward to seeing her character and the station post series being developed further. That hope was dashed quickly. I know that question wasn't necessarily directed at me, but I've been meaning to read the Psi Corps books for some time now. I think reading your comment has raised the priority on that.
