The 1st episode I watched..was yesterday..it is called " Midnight on the Firing Line" .. I am loading up Soul Hunter right now,as a matter of fact. Yes, this is my very 1st time watching this show. I am liking how the station is a huge blend of different species. I am learning the names of the characters...the one I find interesting at the moment is the woman who appears to be a commander of sorts...Ivanova? She looks like she will be a type of commander riker character..which I really like. Give it a try. ME universe borrowed a lot from Babylon 5. The station itself is a prototype citadel, Minbari war stories are essentially the First contact war, telepaths are prototype biotics, Shadows incorporating beings into their controls are reaper prototype and the Catalyst is quite a Vorlon from the beginning. IMO, Babylon 5 is way more polished story wise. It has larger lore and less bs compared to ME. Overall, it is better sci-fi with lesser action and older graphics. Still, visuals should be good enough and some acting is outstanding. It does have a lot of .... water in it. I wish it were more focused with less side stories. But these side things give you a better outlook on the universe and personalities. I watched it when it came out and when it were re-aired in 2001 selectively for the second time and never had to see more than a single episode in a row. So, I don't know how it goes when having longer sessions.

That you liked enough right out the gate to mention bodes well, I think, for your prospects in enjoying the series I'll be sure, btw, from this point on, to toss spoiler warnings on anything I post that might ruin things for you! One of the best things about B5 for me is the way it builds into the story - each ep is a building block in the 5 year design of the creator/writer. So from the start, small hints of the bigger arc were dropped in... watching the series when it was first on, we looked for those clues and discussed them the way these days everyone dissects game developer docs. Another great thing is that they don't forget to have a sense of humor in this show. What do make of the other species you've met thus far?

I just finished watching the 1st episode of season 1.....Im going to give it 1 season to see if it can hook me. From what I saw, this series screams mass effect. Looks like that station is the citadel. Im kinda not cool with the psychic thing..but if they can explain it by using science, I will give it a shot. I agree with the others who say, keep watching! Not having to wait a whole week (or off-season!) for the next episode is a huge bonus for keeping up with all the story threads and plotlines. Looking forward to reading more of your first impressions.

I just remembered Ivanova wasn't the only feisty character in Babylon 5. There's Natoth. Julie Caitlin Brown is Natoth. It's too bad she didn't like all the extra stuff on her and the character disappeared after she signed out.

She could have been my favourite character on the series had she not had a bad (allergic?) reaction to the heavy makeup. The actress they brought in to replace her in the role took the character in a completely different direction, and was gone after one episode. Caitlin Brown did return for another part, and they must have sorted out the makeup issue later in the series....

It's too bad she didn't like all the extra stuff on her and the character disappeared after she signed out. To their credit though, it took two actresses quitting because of the make-up to put the character on a bus. I was sad to see her go though. My favorite Na'Toth moment is near the end of "Parliament of Dreams". Having thwarted an assassination attempt against G'Kar she not only helped turn the assassin's own organization against him, but his would be final threat as well. Unfortunately I can't find a clip of just that scene without linking a whole episode but here: Edit: Video fail. This site allegedly supports dailymotion videos but it won't post. Trying a link. The delivery in that scene was marvelous, they play off each other perfectly.

She came back for a cameo in S5 and I was glad to find out what happened to the character. I'm not sure whether JMS actually intended it or perhaps did fans ask after her? I wasn't that involved in the internet forums then.

So here's another first impressions post: Talia Winters Intriguing, alluring, very controlled. Her presentation was crystallized to the point of being cliched. I felt like I knew her persona the moment I saw her. A telepath named Talia Winters? That was like calling water wet. Part of an organization with fascist undertones? Didn't even bat an eye. They just absolutely nailed her look and Andrea Thompson delivered beautifully. You could tell how she was going to be, as a character, just by how she dealt with constantly getting snubbed by Ivanova. Whereas someone like Bester might put on an air of cheer that was either fake or it looked like he was just amused at you, Talia was simply patient and understanding. She knew what her organization represents and she knew how "normals" react to it but instead of being off-put or reveling in it, she just puts on a professional face and deals with it. She's professional, she's dignified, she believes in what she stands for, but she's capable of seeing things from the other side. That means that even though she's part of a fascist group, she's not evil. Right away I knew I wanted to see more of her.

I just got through watching Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers, and I think it's OK. I would as far as say that it's on the whole probably slightly better than Babylon 5: The Gathering was/is but only because it's not doing as much world building and set up than Babylon 5: The Gathering had to do (and seriously when I look at Babylon 5: The Gathering it's a damn miracle that it did well enough to go to series, because it's not that good either version). I think the main problem with Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is that the concept Rangers worked great on B5 because they were just a part of the show and you don't have to think that much about their Code and beliefs and so on, but when you put them as lead the concept of "We never retreat! We never surrender!" is kind actually kind of stupid for what is basically a military force and it something that G'Kar points that out quite well at the start of the movie. And that kung-fu weapon system was either brilliantly stupid or stupidly brilliant, either way it didn't work for me and the whole thing also felt like a poor man's Star Trek wanna-be and I'm ONLY talking about Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers TV movie and nothing else.
It's overall an just an average B sci-fi action TV movie and it's not a bad way to waste 90 minutes if nothing else.
Next up is Babylon 5: A Call to Arms and Crusade which is my favorite part of B5 universe and IMHO Crusade really demands more stories and proper ending!

Legend of the Rangers was godawful. Trying to one up the Shadows- stupid. Punch-punch-kick weapon systems- even more stupid. I cringe when I think about it. Even G'Kar couldn't save it.
Crusade was rocky at the start but was starting to build up and you could tell it could be good. Just like the first season of B5. Pity it got cut short before it could get there. My favorite episode was the one with the touch-based alien posession. Also featured the actor who played Neroon (too lazy to look up the name right now).

I couldn't watch Legend of the Rangers again, but I won't begrudge anyone their ability to enjoy it.
Crusade was doomed from the start. JMS was doing whatever he could to get it aired, and part of that was to sell the network on the idea of another five year story arc (i.e. everyone on Earth will be dead in 5 years). Except JMS never had the intention of going through with that arc, and instead intended to run a story based on the remnants of Shadow tech (I think) -- the plague would have been cured sometime around the end of the first season or beginning of the second.
The conflict between JMS and the network was pretty fun to watch on screen, though. It was pretty clear that JMS was getting the directive to "sex up" the show, because his response was to have a giant space alien grinding the ship. No, that's not what the network wanted? Okay, have the crew watching porn off-screen, because that's sex in space, right? Clear to see why the show was cancelled, because he sold the network on a concept that he had no intention of going through with, but I liked the ideas he was developing. If he could have gotten clear of network interference, it could have been a good series.

I just discovered a series of vids of a new viewer who recorded her response to B5 as she watched for the first time back in 2013. She also watched DS9 and thought the argument over the space stations silly. And like most of us, she was sniffling when she talked of SIL and was clearly reluctant to say goodbye to the B5 universe and chars.

I'll probably get back to my B5 rewatch when I finish with my Walking Dead catching up. Great Show though. One of my favorites of all time and probably the best show I have seen from a writing standpoint until Game of Thrones came out.

I think some of the problem with Crusade was that it was really trying to be more of a fantasy than sci-fi, and it seemed that JMS really wanted to basically The Lord of the Rings in space which would have been really great idea with the films either in works or close to coming out, if they weren't already out. JMS stated that basic of idea of Crusade was basically a warrior, mage, and thief having to save the universe. I think around 2000/2001 TNT (and it's sister network TBS) had a change in management that wanted the networks to get rid of their Southern reputations that the networks supposedly had at the time and wanted go more dramatic shows.

20+ re-watches of B5 and I have yet to make it through all of Crusade. >.> <.<
Part of it is I can't take Office Space Captain seriously. Guy needs a mug in his hand and the bald technomage needs a magic red stapler.

He is really charming and creepy at the same time. Gideon was better leader than Sheridan and Sinclair were and was second only to Lochley in getting shit done without the needing to get Earth or the ISA to bail them out. It's Lt. Matherson I can't take seriously because I've never watch Daniel Dae Kim for more than 10 minutes and not want to laugh my ass off every time I see him doing anything.

So a little back ground for how much this series has meant to me overall. Again it is in my top about 6 favorite series of all time. John Sheridan is probably my favorite fictional character of all time for me. This series helped at least from a fictional standpoint, influence the person I grew up being. From a political and moral stand point. Its one of my three big influences right up there with the Harry Potter series, Dragon Age Inquisition, and perhaps Game of Thrones. For about three years in a row I did a rewatch of it and again been trying to do one for the last two years but things keep getting in my way. I will probably get back to it or start from scratch in the relatively recent future. And I plan on having my girlfriend watch it with me so she can see one of my big influences and I just can share it with her. And also really trying to get her to play Inquisition but she is not cooperating lol.

Gideon was ok but he was just a generic space captain most of the time. Same with Sheridan and Sinclair, really. Their points of difference and where they became interesting come from outside their job and a lot of it had to do with their backstory. That's not to say they were all exactly the same. Sinclair seemed more about diplomacy and being a people person, while Sheridan was more task oriented and militaristic. Gideon seemed more over his head then the other two to be honest, but he had determination and sheer stubbornness to see him through. Also off the top of my head, both Sheridan and Sinclair got some pretty good strategic Crowning Moments of Awesome; Sinclair using the Rush Act to give the dock workers exactly what they want and Sheridan had a few in battle-wise but also the double bluff in tricking the League of Non Aligned Words to agree to use the White Stars for protection- "absolutely nothing happened here " Speaking of Sheridan, I liked his backstory and how it set him apart from Sinclair. I feel like In the Beginning kinda ruined the Black Star story though. When people spoke of it in the show proper it seemed like a cunning, thought out strategy whereas in the special, it was a desperate, "winging it" move. Kinda cheapens it a little in my opinion.
