I'm hugely biased (you could probably guess that, since I like Mass Effect enough to post semi-regularly on the Mass Effect forums) but my answer is "Yes. Yes, you should buy the first three. And then you should probably buy Andromeda later unless it looks like the game is actually on fire."

I would definitely recommend getting the Shepard Trilogy if you are planning on getting Andromeda. While you don't need to play them to play Andromeda, it will help with understanding a lot of the lore.

Greetings, I haven't really played much of mass effect (me1) on Xbox 360, for 2 hrs. Should I go through the first 3 on my gaming PC, or buy andromeda? The first three games are connected: ME1 ME2 and ME3. The ME1 save files can carry over to ME2 and from ME2 to ME3 -if you want and even appearance can be carried over (with a few tweaks though may not look exactly the same). Playing them however can not only give you a background for the lore but can also familiarize you with Bioware style games. A great intro if you have not played them before. However ME:A will not be connected to the other three in anyway. As to what to play the games on. It really depends on what your want out of your experience. If you have the games on console and on PC as well either should do fine. Just note that transferring saves between platforms can get buggy and tricky but can be done but it is usually safer to go one route through all 3. I myself prefer the PC versions of the Trilogy however since they can be modded a lot easier and I simply must have the expanded galaxy map for ME3.

I would however advice NOT buying the Trilogy boxset on disc, because if you plan on playing on PC, Mass Effect 3 can ONLY be installed via download from Origin....which means the disc's are usless. I found that out first hand when I bought the boxset back in October.

Greetings, I haven't really played much of mass effect (me1) on Xbox 360, for 2 hrs. Should I go through the first 3 on my gaming PC, or buy andromeda? Play the Trilogy at some point, but you don't have to play it before the Andromeda release. You should expect your ME-1 thru -3 play-thoughs to be ~ 60 to 100 hours long for each game if you are a newbie (like I was 3 years ago). Others here will likely disagree with me on the amount of time to reasonably play each game. MAJOR ADVICE: Make sure you install the Origin ( HERE) software client app FIRST before downloading the games to a PC. It makes the installation work correctly. This is from the conversation I had with BW/EA support when I couldn't get the trilogy to install from the disks on my PC. Pay attention to the recommended PC component specs for ME:Andromeda (available likely in Feb., '17). This way you'll have a game system that can easily handle all four games. Note: You will especially want to invest in the DLCs for ME-2 and -3. I like using Origin for downloading the games, and it will keep your game files automatically up-to-date; including important patches to the game as they become available (you won't have to hunt them down!). Origin has been greatly improved from 5+ years ago. I have no problems with this service.

I wouldn't play the games necessarily for story or lore since, in large part MEA is a bit of a reboot...not a full on one of course...but a little. But buy the games because they are great games to begin with, and you should get a feel of what your typical BioWare title is like. Since I do not think the tones will be too different. If you like the trilogy, you'll likely enjoy Andromeda.

It has been made pretty clear that you don't need to play the Shepard trilogy in order to enjoy Andromeda... however I HIGHLY recommend you play them. You don't particularly need the lore, since I am sure Andromeda will fill you in on anything you need to know, but the trilogy is AMAZING and definitely worth it.

I am sure I am not the only one who hates it??? BTW I use the pull the plug combined with the off-line trick.

I tried various 'solutions' but non would work, because Origin was asking for an Activation code which I already used to activate the games when I installed ME:1 and 2. This is quite a well known issue with the box set, that EA never bothered to fix.

ME2 and ME3 are the games I have enjoyed most, ever. And I've played quite a few over the past thirty years. ME1 is slower, with more emphasis on exploration. Might be closer to the Andromeda experience. I enjoyed ME1 as well but I think it's less polished and a bit more grindy-RPG than the other two, less widespread appeal.

Like everyone says - play the trilogy.
BUT....
If you want to use a gamepad, don't buy it on pc. Buy it on console. For whatever reason, BW didn't include gamepad support for the trilogy on pc. DAI was the first pc game to include it.
There might be a mod that lets you use the gamepad but it's much simpler to buy it on console if you'd prefer not to go K+M. Bonus: no Origin.

Greetings, I haven't really played much of mass effect (me1) on Xbox 360, for 2 hrs. Should I go through the first 3 on my gaming PC, or buy andromeda? The thing is ME:A is designed, so that it "derives" from Mass Effect Trilogy, but doesn't rely on its events/characters. My take on this would be to play the trilogy despite that, because: ME1: Will give you great introduction to the ME universe, story, races, background of various fractions ect. ME2: Will give you feel of what was happening in Milky Way at the time Andromeda Initiative was leaving to Andromeda. And ME3... well... it will give you direct answer why there is Mass Effect: Andromeda and NOT simply Mass Effect 4 being released in March 2017...

The ME Trilogy is a great series of games. If you're enjoying ME1, then by all means buy the other two and continue your playthrough. Note that the combat gameplay style does change rather significantly between ME1 and ME2.
As for Xbox 360 platform (since no one has really posted about this yet) - You can sometimes purchase the remaining two games for the Xbox used and very inexpensively, but the individual discs do seem to be getting harder to find here. Also, some of the prices I've seen for the Collectors Editions have been pretty steep. There is also a complete boxed set for the Xbox 360 of the entire Trilogy that generally sells for around $27 CAN here new. Some of the DLC for ME2 does not sell directly from the Xbox Marketplace, but requires an activation code for what is known as the Cerberus Network, so if you're buying used discs, make sure you get a set that has those codes with them if you think you'll be interested in any of the DLC. As of the last time I checked, ME2 and ME3 were not available for download from the Xbox store either.
ME:A will be apart of the ME Trilogy. The saves from the Trilogy are not importing into ME:A and that saga (as Bioware is calling it) is starting in a completely different galaxy than the Trilogy. They are promising a few mentions of Trilogy characters as a connection, but not much more than that, so playing the Trilogy definitely should not be critical to playing ME:A.

Look up moonshine controller mods if you want near native quality controller support on pc.
Combat aside Mass Effect 1 is still the best for story, questing, exploration and setting detail not to mention it establishes all of the series main cast besides Mordin and Legion (Garrus, Tali, Wrex, Liara, et al). It's a much richer RPG experience but the combat is rather horrid in the early game but really picks up around level 30 onwards. Gameplay at level 50 and above on insanity is infinitely more satisfying than 0-10 on normal - it just takes a bit of perseverance before the fun can really begin. ME2 and ME3 wouldn't exist without it and their story, characters and gameplay systems can't be fully appreciated without understanding them in full context.
If you are not bothered about shepard's lengthy story which is horribly botched in the end and only care about getting up to speed with the gameplay i'd suggest skipping the singleplayer entirely and trying Mass Effect 3 multiplayer first because it has by far the best most evolved gameplay mechanics in the series and forms the basis of the new combat system in Andromeda.

I don't see why you couldn't play the trilogy after Andromeda if you wanted to tbh, but I would highly recommend going with PC as you can mod. MEUITM is essential for me with ME1 as it makes the game look incredible with much higher definition. For ME2 I use a mod to skip the hacking games, and in ME3 I've modded the ending (after playing it vanilla the first time).

Mass Effect 2 is "on the house" on Origin right now anyway, so go there and grab it for free, if you have an Origin account. Go to origin.com, select "Free games" in the menu to the left and then "On the house". For some reason I can't post a working link. Sorry. Here's their tweet with a link.

You don't have to. If you don't have other games to play to keep you busy until MEA is released, I would say get the trilogy. The best thing about the trilogy is it has replay value. If you do decide to play the trilogy before MEA is released, you can post your playthrough in this thread.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. You don't need to play the trilogy to understand Andromeda but you'd be missing out on one EPIC story if you do. These games have become probably become my favourite of all time well at least in the 30 odd years I've been gaming anyway. Admittedly graphics wise ME1 is a little weak compared to 2 and 3 and the Mako can be a pain to drive at times as well but in general that aside it's worth it as these aer relatively minor inconveniences compared to the experience of playing the game. If your worried about the RPG elements don't be as you can pretty much just get the system to do that for you in the trilogy. It is relatively easy to figure out though so if you feel brave give it a go. One of the things I love about Bioware's games and in particular Mass Effect is that they know how to tell a great story the ME games aer pretty easy to just jump in and play as they all have a kind of prologue mission which will introduce yo uto how each game handles differently from the others although for the most part once you've got to grips with one the other 2 should be straightforward as they handle pretty much identically. ME2 and 3 have slightly differnt power sets compared to 1 depending on what class you choose for your Shepard but they've all got fun abilities to use.

Definitely worth it. If you find ME1 hard going (it's a bit clunky), skip ahead to ME2. Once you're in love with the characters and setting, go back and play ME1 and import your save into ME2. You will be amazed.
Also, be sure to play ME3 with the Extended cut installed because... reasons.

if you want to play the Trilogy as it should be (personal opinion), you need to install MExplorer tool and use it to install ALOT in the 3 games.

Like everyone else said, you won't have to do the trilogy, but I recommend it. It's a good story and worth it for its own sake. It's inexpensive-ME2 is free right now on Origin-and for me, anyway, it connects me to the ME universe. Andromeda will have its own cast of characters, a whole new setting and purpose, but their origin stems from the Milky Way and it's just nice to have that background.
