Warriors: Sword/Shield - Mace, Swords, and Axes
2-Handed - Mauls, Greatswords, Greataxes
Rouge Dual Weild: Dual Blade Dagger, Single Blade Dagger
What are the distinctions between these weapons? Especially between mauls and greatswords...

Different attack animation chains and base damage. Dual-bladed daggers hit in a small AoE arc as opposed to the precise, stabby manner of regular daggers. IIRC, dagger attack animations only depend on the type of dagger in the main hand.
Mauls use an overhead swing for high single-target damage (good for the Avvar, since he spends most of his time casting spells like the mage he is). Greatswords/axes have that nice, sweeping AoE damage. 1-handed animations are kind of similar to each other. I'd recommend trying each type to get a real idea of the differences. Same goes for all weapons, to be honest.
Can safely say I haven't used an axe, mace or maul since my Hakkons dropped, though.

Especially between mauls and greatswords... Three differences if I'm not mistaken - attack speed/dps (for basic attacks), base damage, and AOE. In general, all other things being equal, a slower dps weapon often has greater base damage (which is part of the damage calculation for abilities). Greatswords tend to be AOE, higher DPS, and lower base damage than Mauls (which tend to be single target). Maul of the Dragon was my go-to weapon back in the day for reaver owing to high crit chance and base damage numbers.

My friend who plays perilous all the time told me the maul has some hidden armor/shield penetration factor... Is that true? Maybe your friend does those mock battle with armors? It is true that blunt weapons do more damage to heavy armor and the person behind it.

Does mace have the fastest attack speed among 1-handers? I've been using Ham quite a lot lately and notice I barely need animation cancelling with it. Never find AOE daggers of any use, even in SP...The animation feels weird, and it's hard to aim targets. Sometimes people use Audacity for fun, but I think that's all about it... I prefer greatswords over mauls because of AOE effect, especially as level 1s when the 2-handed warriors still need to rely on basic attacks. Mauls may be good for Reaver or Avvar after they unlock more abilities but I never like using them on Katari. My friend who plays perilous all the time told me the maul has some hidden armor/shield penetration factor... Is that true? No...

My friend who plays perilous all the time told me the maul has some hidden armor/shield penetration factor... Is that true? Yes, don't listen these scrubs, but you need to do animation cancel. The best thing is that it stacks. I'm lying of course...
