Some game companies are implementing a "try before you buy" business idea. They make available for free, a character you can download
for a limited time or with limited abilities. This feature allows the player to see if the characters meets their needs or play style. You can unlock
their full capabilites by forking out real dollars. This is a great idea for DLC Multiplayer characters, imo.
Here are some games that make this available:
Street Fighter V
League of Legends
Evalve
Do you think it's a good idea for ME:AMP ? Maybe even for the SP Campaign like a super duper Mako with Guns?

I don't mind pay to win if you're that much of a scrub, but BW already has a proven track record of segregating players that do not have all DLC.

I believe that most, if not all, of the character kits were free to download. BioWare can make you download them, but if you never play MP, what's the point?

So far, most games using the "characters have to be individually purchased" model have gone under unless they have a design that closely mirrors League of Legends, and most of their clones still failed using the model.
With a very high (and very fast) failure rate, I think we'll see a lot less of that microtransaction model in coming years.

The solution to the segregation issue is already in place in games such as Elder Scrolls Online. Every time a new DLC is made available it's made a compulsory download for anyone who wants to continue to play online. The download itself is completely free and includes improvements to the base game that everyone benefits from even if they don't open their wallet, but using the actual DLC content itself requires the player to pay for it one way or another. Everyone has the same version of the game on their platform, so no segregation occurs. If ME:AMP has paid for DLC/content in it (which I hope it doesn't), this tried and tested method would likely be what's used to avoid segregation issues. |
