I just started watching The Expanse (only watched two episodes so far) and was thinking about how it reminds me of Mass Effect, visually - particularly how that part of Ceres Station with the trees resembles the Presidium, and the lower areas have an Omega vibe. And then that woman (forget the character's name) came on and started speaking and I was like "It's Shala'Raan!" But yeah, sci-fi has been using similar tropes and visuals forever. A whole lot of things influenced Mass Effect, and now we're seeing things inspired by it. I don't see that as a problem at all - other than the fact that it makes me feel a little old!

The Expanse is NOT Netflix, it's SciFy Channel. If you have Amazon Prime, you can also watch it there after purchase. In some countries it's Netflix. That's a good point. I don't know how Netflix works in other countries, but in the US some of the shows that pop up as Netlix "originals" I've watched prior to it being released on Netflix - chiefly shows produced overseas. Maybe they just pay for the rights during production to call it their own work.

I'd love to see some of 'Expanse' in MEA. Talking aboout 1-4 novels here, 5th is fucked up and I've only started the 6th one - not expecting much, to be honest. 3&4 have all those right topics we might (or might not) touch in MEA. Love how they had worked with characters too. I'd die to see Avasarala vs Udina chat, really. Another thing I totally love about the Expanse - the Belters' language, something ME had always been lacking. 'Perfect' canadian or british does not make much sense for the multicultural and multinational sosciety, and that's basically all we've got.

I thought ME1 was memorable for how it had Samesh Bhatia and I liked that James was a hispanic in ME3. I'm thinking ME:A will have more of an ethnic diversity in no small part due to Manveer probably having a say in things, which isn't really a bad thing. I'd like to see more europeans as well like people with scandinavian accents or german accents... or Russians. I can't remember much of that being in the trilogy.
...As long as it isn't tokenism. It's not believable to have a different ethnicity in a group of 3 people per every member in that group and then spread that out to the entire nexus so you never see any segregation IMO.
I thought there was a fair bit of ethnic diversity in ME1 now that I think about it. I mentioned Samesh but it also had those japanese guards at Port Hanshan, Matsuo for one, it had the Mihalkovitch guy which is a russian fellow I believe. ME1 just had the sense of humanity being spread out and scattered across the galaxy after leaving earth for a life in space. I didn't get this quite as much in the latter entries and going to Earth in ME3 just felt like "MURICA" and London was just a heavyhanded WW2-reference. It should've felt much more like a "Mass Effect version of Earth in the future" but it felt too generic somehow.

What everyone else said, common scifi themes. Not only am I a lifelong scifi fan I absofrigginglutely ADORE The Expanse and can't wait for season 2, I think it's one of the best scifi series to date, certainly one of my favourites. Haven't read the books but perhaps I should...

Nice to see Expanse fans here. Can't wait for the season 2 premiere. Gonna soften the wait for ME:A for me.

I love the Expanse novels and the TV show did a pretty decent job in following the story line of Leviathan Wakes. I hope they finish off the first book in the second series. Aside from a few visual things in the show though I don't really see any similarities to Mass Effect (ancient protomolecule aside). Ancient aliens seem to be a pretty staple diet of a lot of sci fi these days. That's true, maybe there a few similarities then

I just finished binge watching the first season of "The Expanse". Hollee Sheet. I really have no other words. It is really good, have you read any of the books?

It is really good, have you read any of the books? Not really, wasn't really aware that there are books... I'm wondering if I should expect this thing to become similar to "Dead Space", because while I like horror *elements*, I don't enjoy like pure horror doom and gloom and downer endings. I only played the first Dead Space but I wouldn't say the books go into a total doom and gloom. There are horror elements throughout but I found the books focused far more on the political aspects of Earth, The MCRN and the OPA. There's also a lot of focus on character development and one of the books is dedicated to the points of view from just the Rocinate crew so hopefully the series will follow suit. The first series did a really good job of following the first book so hopefully this will continue with the show.

Would you recommend the books? Or will they ruin my enjoyment from the show? I would definitely recommend them. I don't get excited about many book releases but I'm really looking forward to the next one coming out. I don't think they will ruin your enjoyment of the show at all

I'd love to see some of the actors in The Expanse get voice work in ME games. The ME series has used actors from Star Trek, so it's not too far-fetched.
Starting with Jared Harris:

I'm wondering if I should expect this thing to become similar to "Dead Space", because while I like horror *elements*, I don't enjoy pure horror doom and gloom and downer endings. Not sure what's there in the series, but books are nothing like htat. It's hard to identify the genre one way or the other, someties it's more of the politics, sometimes it's more of the novel or social dramma. First book is the awesome combo of a 'space detective with politics flavored with horror (while not being a 'resident evil'-like zombie-shooter). It's always about the characters. And those characters are really something. I'd say that the novels are must-read for anyone who's into good sci-fi - it reminded me of Babylon 5 and ME a lot. Sometimes with the heavy 'Firefly' notes. A nice effort to put some 'science' into 'fiction' too. The 5th book, however...well, some people love it this way, but I don't. Not to spoil anything, but they've changed their storytelling a lot in this one. It's full of stupid forced drama and 'WTF' moments. I'd highly recommend 1-4, though. Each has a complete and unique plot, and they are tied by the solid setting. As I've mentioned - 3&4 have lots of themes I'd love to see in Andromeda. People facing the alien worlds, people looking for better life, people fighting for power even when it does not make sense. The best thing? There's no 'Big Bad Evil' and 'White Knights saving the Galaxy'. James Holden is the farthest possible thing from Commander Shepard, and humanity does not really need Reapers to ruin their lives.

I believe Mass Effect and The Expanse share some similarities, but more so differences. It's curious that ships in the Mass Effect universe were meant to travel just like those in The Expanse, only that the mass effect fields would make the ship go faster than light. However, I don't think the ME developers really had a universal concept about how ships travel. We could see it in cutscenes and we can see it in Andromeda with the Tempest having an avarage speed, which makes little sense for ships that accelerate half the trip and decelerate the other half.
On another note, there is a quote from 'Cibola Burn' that is very fitting for Andromeda:
“Civilization has a built-in lag time. Just like light delay. We fly out here to this new place, and because we’re civilized, we think civilization comes with us. It doesn’t. We build it. And while we’re building it, a whole lot of people die. You think the American west came with railroads and post offices and jails? Those things were built, and at the cost of thousands of lives. They were built on the corpses of everyone who was there before the Spanish came. You don’t get one without the other."
