To me the Baron is a sad, sympathetic character and the quest is heartbreaking. He is a soldier away from his family most of the time. The family is dysfunctional, distant, his wife is having an affair wants to leave him. His daughter barely talks to him and resents him. Baron can't show his family his love for them in the way they need and the same with the wife and daughter. Things happen, neither black nor white and everything piles up until it explodes and everyone in the family is hurt. Its so incredible moving that quest. None of them come across an entirely good nor bad. The quest stays with you. And the voice actor for the Baron is superb. Much like Fenris' voice actor. He's a poster child for PTSD, but a very good character. Wasn't as enamoured of his quest line as others were in the old 'Feedback - be more like the Witcher 3' thread, but still...very good.

Hahaha intimidated some bandits by waving my medallion at them. Freed a tiny village of ghouls so the "populace" returned. One of the villagers said he'd name a son after Geralt. I do think the wind in hair thing is taken too far. I remember being inside a hut, not even close to the widow, and the hair moved like a strong breeze was hitting me. And I despite everyone's button over their head saying I could talk to them... You can't talk to them. So that seems pointless. Anyway, after trying to talk to every peasant and solider about the wife and getting no prompts I asked husband if he could give me a non spoiler hint off the internet. He said "finish the witch bog quest". Huh. The plot thickens.

Okay.
So, what I've been noticing is the quests in the Witcher thrive on mystery. Each step gives you a bit more information and yet another task you must complete before we finally have all explained.
Is this what they call a "quest chain"? They're exceptionally long. And they send you all over the place, so you end up exploring the huge world kinda whether you want to or not.
I'm trying to think of Dragon Age quest chain that does something similar and the only thing I can think of is finding Brother Genetivi in Origins, but only if you don't insist on walking into the back room--- and bypassing going to the inn at Lake Calenhad.
I bet there is no shortcut on these quest chain mysteries on a replay. So what was fun and Interesting the first time could feel like so much running around the 2d and on?
Anyway. I received the dagger from Gran on behalf of the Lady of the Wood and nary a hint about the Baron's wife. So, if they're connected, Geralt does not yet know. And I feel pulled towards completing that before all this Witch business. So, off to Oxenfurt.

This response makes me smile I'm trying to be detailed in everything I notice. I just visited Oxenfurt and wow! Denerim is the capital of Fereldan and I wish it could have looked as nice as even this small town. And there is a barber! Got Geralt a shave and let his hair loose. Now he's kinda hot. interesting, wonder if Devs were getting flack about set protagonist and so added that. The Baron's daughter wasn't interested in returning. Saw that coming. What I didn't see is that she'd join a religious cult to go find her mom. Why do I feel like I'll be crossing paths with that girl someday, hmm? Maybe in battle.

I like and don't like that game forces you to walk indoors unless you intentionally run.
Forgot to mention the adrenaline rush the Baron's barn fire from a distance gave me. I was like do do doooo on my horse then I saw it and I was like HYAH....So that whole thing was done well. Made me glad I wasn't fast traveling or that moment wouldn't have been as awesome.
Baron gets pretty demanding when I give him updates. Grrr, you wife beater you.

The barber is a returning feature from TW2, though back then Geralt couldn't quite grow a beard yet. It's really fun to read your updates, phoray. One thing I discovered only recently is how much information you can pick up from the right books in the world. I raided every shelf in Vizima, and three or four books told me things that I found out the hard way during my first game. Reading is good for your education indeed. Some quest chains are indeed a bit long, since you really just want to find Ciri. But on the other hand, most of them have so much good stuff in them that they're worth it. Enjoy Crookback Bog...

Now you see where some of the "DA should be more like Witcher 3" comments come from? I hope DA4 will drop the old gen consoles so we can get some thriving Tevinter cities. That might mean my own graphics card will no longer be up to the task by then, but I'll grumble and cry over my bank account, and then get a new one. The barber is a nice little touch I usually use a cheat code to shave him when I'm out exploring and not near a city, but when I'm in town, I always pay a visit. I won't comment on anything else because spoilers, but I am glad I didn't have to wait until February for your next update

Well, the idea behind my playing the game was that people kept making the comparison. Having not played any of the Witcher's, I felt it difficult o argue with them. Also, if it really was that great, I might be missing out on an enjoyable experience.
I'm going to make comparisons to Dragon Age as I go along but definitely not meant to be a debate thread. I'm giving The Witcher 3 an honest shot and the Dragon Age trilogy is my frame of reference

I am hardly the first person in this thread to bring up a comparison between the games -- as noted, phoray herself made the comparison to Denerim, but you were apparently ok with that. I'm not sure why you're singling me out for admonition.

Goodness. So, Lady of the Wood sent me to the tree, essentially. Where I have found a pulsating creature that claims to be a cursed druid imprisoned by the Ladies. He claims they're eating children to maintain...I dunno, their life or something. And that those kids I played hide and seek with earlier have already been kidnapped. After some questions, I tell I have to think about it.
I go back to the Swamp Orphanage and Gran and the kids are gone. Okay, so that bit is...Maybe true. I screw around trying o see if I remember where Johnny the Godling lives to see if he has anything o say but fail. Figure he must not know anything or the game would have made a marker for him or something.
So, now the question is who to align with. Ancient fickle spirit ladies who might eat children to maintain power or the loser druid who's already died once but claims he can help the kids that are NOT with Gran at the orphanage when I checked.
I mean, I feel like the obvious is the druid but then this games likes to trick me.

Okay, I sided with the spirit in the tree knowing that would likely piss off the ancient spirit women. I figured it may kill me but couldn't just let children get eaten if that was really true. Spirit women look like characters out of silent Hill. D: Gran turns out to be the Baron's wife... But, I dunno. She made the deal, sucks to be her, don't have sympathy for the woman. She should have just run off with her two kids, but instead she makes pacts with witches for an abortion. We make our beds, we gotta sleep in em. Witches threaten Anna... I get the choice to threaten the Witches. And I'm like. I can barely beat a werewolf. No way I can fight ancient witch beings. So I say I'll fight them later with Ciri at my side And either they curse me or tell a prophecy about how I'll never see anything but a mirage of Ciri. Well. That sucks. Now I wonder if this game even lets me meet up with Ciri. Always took it as a given. I go tell the Baron. He's pretty grumpy and finally tells me Anna's story. Geez. I say they both suck but Anna should have nutted up and left a long time ago to be honest.especialy after Tamara was older. But I guess she was a suicidal butter, I dunno. Then the Baron, in love with Anna in spite of all the toxicity. Declare he will go into the bog. And will I help him. Sigh. I guess I still Like the Baron. I feel sad for their destroyed family. Dead baby, daughter ditched him, wife enslaved by Bog Witches. Guess I'll be fighting bog witches after all. And that's it until next week, folks

There is a book titled "She Who Knows" in game... it is probably just a legend, but to every legend there is a grain of truth. Now I really hope that the game will keep your interest until such time that this whole matter is accounted for!

Before you decide how to deal with the witches, try to read the local history, or ask the older locals, there is evidence everywhere that might sway your decision. Edit: nevermind I see you are already past that point, I didn't realize there was another page. Though that leads me to perhaps TW3's most annoying feature, namely those blasted "recap" narrations that play every time you load a save when you haven't just died. Yes, game, I know that this tale begins with Geralt of Rivia looking for the sorceress Yennefer - you told me that 15 minutes ago last time I reloaded a save. You can mod that out you know?

To me, the whole business with the witches and the spirit in the tree, that was just about the darkest and most depressing quest-line in the entire game (if not in any game really). It only got worse once (after completing it) I read the wiki about it and realized there really is no good choice here, it's really messed up no matter what you do . I am a bit behind phoray in my own replay, so this will be coming u soon again. To be honest, I am not really looking forward to it but what can you do ... got to get through it to get to the good stuff.

If these games taught me something, is to trust the evil you know over the one you don't. So, after some vacillation, I decided there was no way I was taking the jump for the spirit in the tree. The outcome I got was not necessarily better, although I am glad I went with it. Your mileage may vary.
By the way, I recommend pursuing Keira's questline if only because it includes one of the best, most memorable sidequests in the game, in my opinion. That said, A Towerful of Mice (as it is called) is also one of the creepiest, most disturbing ones. Think DA:O's Deep Roads levels. Plus, I am fond of Keira and the conclusion for her arc, even if I chose not to get busy. Perhaps especially because of that, in fact. But then, the previous two games gave me a lot of experience in fending off horny sorceresses xD
It's nice to reexpierence the game vicariously through others, so thank you for sharing. I've maintained for a while that The Witcher is both similar and different enough to Bioware games that there should be a larger crossover between their fans, so the more people willing to try and enjoy both, the better.
And here's a tip, which you may or may not find useful: I made it a point to turn off the question marks in the map. This is because I have some completitionist tendencies which would have forced me into the tedious labor of going after each. And. Every. One. It's much more exciting to bump into them wandering in the wild, anyway.
