I'm sorry to hear you had such a stressful relationship with FF.net, comments of that caliber are needlessly brutal! Writing fanfiction should be a safe space for both author and readers in my opinion, not everyone was born a professional writer and even the best of writers had to start somewhere and learn their craft, it's not something you learn overnight. Besides, we're doing this for free on our own time, that by itself should afford you some respect - the fact that your writing doesn't appeal to someone is just the nature of creative work, not everyone will be pleased and no one should expect that. I honestly never understood the amount of vitriol some people can pour into others who make a creative effort that doesn't meet their personal standards, I mean, it's not like they paid money or made commitments of any kind, if someone wants to offer feedback that the author can use that's great, but the things you quoted are way out of bounds. For my part I got lucky in that respect so far; originally I was writing fanfictions almost a decade ago on a forum, not BSN, but by that time I had been writing quite a bit of other stuff so what I actually posted wasn't as poorly developed as my very first stumblings (my parents happen to be linguists specialized in literature, so I had the benefit of awesome feedback at home when I was first learning the craft) and then I stopped posting my stuff online for about 8 or so years. I had positive experiences for the most part, but I was super concerned about getting my "serious" writing moving instead of pouring all my creative juices into projects that would never be officially published and perhaps never really that special in a sea of similar fanfics, but honestly I had a lot of room for improvement still. I perfected my style actually by taking one of my OC fics from that very site, deleting it and turning it into a novel, the first one I ever finished - but it never amounted to much (mostly because I want to work over it again before submitting it, I only ever sent it to one or two publishers for consideration). Now that, along with a lot of my other "serious" or "turned serious" stuff, whether finished or partway done, is just sitting on my shelf waiting for me to find the time, inspiration and motivation to do this again... and meanwhile life happened and all that, now since MEA came out and I became a Jaal fan I found my way here and I decided to return to fanfictions because why the hell not? It's not like I was actually USING my free time to work on my serious stuff and I found MEA and everyone on this thread to be great motivation for me to at least write in general, just anything at all; that has had it's desired effect in turn, since then I've found my muse again in my main work. For my new work, I was posting on Tumblr exclusively for a short time but readers kept asking me why I'm not on AO3 so I expanded there - I gotta say, the responses I got from readers on both sites were absolutely phenomenal (I haven't received a single negative criticism - not even a constructive one - it's all just amazingly positive), I am so pleased by how that whole experience turned out with my first "comeback" story. I did sign up for FF.net not long ago actually, just posting that first story since it's finished along with what I have for Akksul, but I haven't received any comments yet from anyone, so we'll see how that turns out - if anyone will even say anything now, considering the state of the fandom - but if I would start to get the kind of responses you described I think I'd just stop posting there. I go where I'm wanted and where the majority of readers actually want to read my stuff, it's not like I want to force my narratives on anyone. Still, right now my main concern is more about how few people are still around to read my niche stuff, that's why I wanted to expand to FF.net in the first place, tap into some unknown audiences. Anyway, so my quarian chapter 1 is going pretty well so far! I'm really liking how my protagonist turned out. I've got about 5 or so chapters planned out in advance, although I'm still vacillating over some details - the thing that's holding me back now is that I haven't read the MEA tie-in novels yet and I don't want to go against anything canon inadvertently, but from what I've heard pretty much in-game knowledge should be enough for what I'm planning. I don't want this fic to be so much in the spotlight of the game's events, more on the periphery, dabbling in some alternative perspectives (I'm thinking e.g. Ryder is off doing xyz on, say, Elaaden and meanwhile my protagonist is hearing about it over on Voeld or something like that). At least, that's my skeleton plan, it might change totally as I advance in the actual story, but basically I want to expand on MEA and show a different side of it I guess you could say. Plus I'm still undecided about the romance - there's gotta be romance because I'm a sucker for romance narratives, so there's going to be something, I just don't know which way to jump yet. (Maybe I'll just keep readers in suspense and let it just unfold as it wills...) I'm going to go off and plot now.
I agree. I want feedback, but not needless cruelty like that. People can be just mean, I have learned that lesson long ago. I wonder why people do that to others...since I find no joy in being mean to others.
Exactly, not everyone starts off great, that’s what I think quite a lot of people on the internet need to learn. I had to climb my way up slowly. And true, something won’t please everyone.
That’s good you didn’t have to put up with that, I wouldn’t wish that abuse upon any writer. And sounds like your parents helped a lot!
Speaking of Mass Effect Andromeda, that game got me back into the Mass Effect universe. And I love Jaal, as well as Jaal and Ryder. I need more!
And speaking of Bioware romances, is it me, or are the romances more deep in Andromeda in cases compared to the Shepard Trilogy? I have only done Jaal and female!Ryder so far in Andromeda. Back in the days of the Shepard Trilogy, I did male!Shepard and Liara in every playthrough except the first.
I wasn’t inspired to write romance stories back then, but female!Ryder and Jaal has made me want to do so. And in these dark times, they keep the darkness away. Things are going fine in my life, its just...things going on in the world that I don’t wish to bring into here.
I need more Ryder and Jaal, and I am glad the Archive has a few hundred. I’ll be making my own as well, even made one for Valentine's Day a few weeks ago. (for the curious- archiveofourown.org/works/13688208) There will be more coming!
Hope the fanfics go well! And hope there’s no mean people, I haven’t had anything like what happened years ago for years. Glad I was introduced to Archive of Our Own though, having another site is good just in case if for some reason things go sour in Fanfiction.net again.
Interesting! Hope it all goes well! I don’t think the Andromeda novels have anything important- one takes place before the game but it itself messes up one key detail- they never tried to settle Eos. The second one takes place back in the Milky Way. So I think you’ll be fine. (I am disappointed that there seems to be no Angara so far in the Expanded Universe Andromeda material...sigh. :smh: That’s what us fanfic writers are for, to do those kind of stories!)
Hope the Ryder and Jaal challenge story is going well! Let me know when you post it, would love to read it!
I think I’ll also do Sakura Ryder’s (my female!Ryder) reaction to such a nightmare too. Since I can imagine seeing all the horrifying things the Kett do would result in nightmares. (Exaltation, horrific experiments, enslavement, killing, and who knows what else they do?! :gasp: )
I agree, there is such a thing as bad writing. And true! One’s skill and story can grow or be chiseled. Curious, do you believe there’s bad concepts, or poor execution? I know some people believe there’s no such thing as a bad concept, that it comes down to poor execution. For me, I am somewhat a believer of the ideal but there may be really bad concepts out there, that won’t work no matter what you do, but I think one would really have to try for it to be that bad… Agreed about the abusive commenters. Inspiring them to grow and improve is very important. And true, sometimes constructive criticism can be stuff that really does need fixing, or subjective stuff that can change from reader to reader. Like for example, some people believe one needs to describe even if the readers might know what things will look like, or don’t need to. I describe things at least once, because it can help draw in new readers who didn’t know of the series at first, and they might become new fans of the series. Though description has to be handled carefully, too much and if it doesn’t flow along with the story enough, and it can slow pacing.
Agreed, AO3 has all but become my favorite place to post my stories. Plus one can reply directly to the commenters and others can get involved as well. Something Fanfiction.net is lacking, as one can only reply by private message (PM).
About double posts, if you want to highlight multiple posts to reply to, go to the button to the right of the quite button (has a gear icon and arrow on it, click on it, then click ‘select post’. Repeat for every post you wish to reply to. The button itself becomes sort of white (at least on my browser, it will change and look a bit different). Hope that helps!
Will add the Quarian story to my reading list!

I know what you mean, I take no pleasure in causing other people pain either. Some people are like that, though, or they do not consider the consequences of their words - many don't, I think. Hehehe, who doesn't love Jaal here! As to the depths of MEA/MET romances - some of the MEA ones certainly have more content, I'm not sure that translates to quality in every instance, however; I'm just basing that on the various opinions I've read since it's release, here and elsewhere, regarding other romances. I know Jaal's romance is amazing and fleshed out, hahaha, but there are complaints about lack of content for some others, e.g. Reyes and Vetra come to mind. MET romances were kind of sparse in some ways, especially the earlier games (LI options were sparse in ME1 to begin with), but personally I really liked how the ME3 ones were developed (I'm a known ME3 superfan though, so I may be biased). I think what offset the smaller amount of dialogues/reactions was the sheer depth of those relationships, though - going through that game is harrowing and emotional, what Shepard goes through personally with his or her chosen LI can be that much deeper as a result, e.g. I massively adore Tali's romance and it ties in very strongly with the main plot of ME3, so I would say that's a superb romance experience on par with Jaal in many ways (even if you don't get that much visually). Garrus and Liara also I think have a lot going for them (huge Garrus fan also ), and I think that the whole emotional roller coaster Liara goes through throughout ME3 also makes it a superb romance; Javik, the Ardat Yakshi transformation, the fall of Thessia - all of these shape Liara profoundly and Shepard shares in that experience. Garrus also has those emotional moments but the bond between him and Shepard is different than with other LI's I think, it's more of a "till death do us part" lonely soldier thing that is... mesmerizing, hahaha. Not to discount the rest of course, I've tried pretty much every romance at least once in MET and I enjoyed most of them (with some notable exceptions), but I agree that there is less "one-on-one" romance material and more tie-in material to the rest of the game (which is excellent!), so for those who want something extra special from their LI they might feel it as sparse. MEA on the other hand... I've still only really tried Jaal (I have stalling playthroughs of Vetra, Reyes and Peebee at the moment, and I'm a completionist so one day I WILL try them all) so I can't speak very much to how fleshed out I found them, but overall I was very pleased with MEA's focus on content size in terms of LI material, at least where Jaal is concerned (and from what I've heard Cora's matches in size at least; the others are smaller with I think Reyes being the smallest, since he's not even a squad member), and also with banter - sooooo much Nomad banter! Love it. But I do have to say that unless you're romancing Jaal, there's very little tie-in I can see to the overall game, which may detract from the experience because you could literally be with anyone and it wouldn't matter from the main plot's point of view; not that being with Jaal gives you special access to anything or whatever, but since the angara are such a huge deal in the game from start to finish, the experience of being romantically involved with a member of their species can add a certain... flavor? I guess? You look at things and other angara in a totally different light. I admit though, I would honestly have preferred way more tie-in stuff. I want people to react to my LI of choice and not just in a line or two of banter, I sort of feel like they missed some good opportunities in MEA to make that a reality - e.g. how does dating the Charlatan not affect pretty much everything you do on Kadara?? I know what you mean about keeping the darkness away - games like this really are havens and food for the soul. Jaalmance was a balm for me just when I needed it, I mean, I'm a total sucker for angst (e.g. Solas...) but I think I really was craving a positive, romantic and wonderful romance like Jaal's was. I so love its fluff it's not even funny. I'll check out your fic! And I will definitely let you know once I've written my own Jaal stuff. I have plans. To answer your question about bad concepts vs. poor execution: I absolutely believe in bad concepts! Not necessarily to say that a master writer couldn't take a "bad concept" and make it into something wonderful, it's a skill you can develop, but I do believe that writers individually have to find what speaks to them first, not the audience they want to choose. For me a bad concept is something I have no purchase on - if I tried writing something I don't know, doesn't necessarily excite me (even if the idea of it might) or it doesn't take my mind anywhere good or useful in a way that would organically advance my plot, that's a bad concept; even if I write beautifully and I can make characters and places come alive, that doesn't help me if the premise of my story just sucks, plain and simple. E.g. if I tried to write a totally tropey (but serious) romance with Ken and Barbie on the beach, no matter how awesome I could make my Ken and Barbie, it still would be about two "doll people" with a seriously questionable moral, social and gender-based implications attached; I could make them into the antithesis of how they are represented, of course - but then my story would no longer be about Ken and Barbie, I'd just be ripping off their names. See what I mean? That to me is a downright trashy concept, which I consider bad, so I would only write that if it were either satire (which would be a totally different concept) or something to torment people with. (Plus, there's not a whole lot of material there to begin with.) Also, there are ill advised concepts out there a plenty: some things I think shouldn't be attempted unless you're sure you can actually pull it off, or at least make a valiant attempt (if you have to seriously scramble and it keeps coming out insufficiently interesting or coherent, it's a bad concept for you). I've seen it before that the premise of a story is just so weak that the whole thing falls apart at the seams and that tells me that the writer bit off more than they could chew or they just didn't put in the right amount of effort and work as it would have required - some things are just really hard to write about convincingly in a way that captivates and holds interest. Of course, I think there are downright bad concepts for all writers equally, too: boring things (describing in excruciating detail how you wake up, brush your teeth and get dressed is something pretty much no one wants to read), things that have no grounding in reality (people are drawn to things they can relate to, if your concept is so far out that no one even comprehends what the story is about, well - then no one gets your story, which is obviously a bad idea), rehashing overused tropes (tropes are not all bad things! Tropes and archetypes are necessary and absolutely inevitable. But some of them will just make everyone cringe and pretty much ignore your writing, e.g. see above Ken and Barbie on the beach), intentionally offensive and inhumane things (yes, there's an audience for horrific stuff - but if your story reads like a snuff film/dictatorial propaganda, etc. and goes into the territory of applauding or encouraging terrible things that directly or indirectly could harm a person or a lot of people, that's pretty much the definition of a bad concept), choosing a concept that has no material to work with (again, see Ken and Barbie example; if you can tell your whole story idea in one paragraph without need for elaboration, you're doing it wrong) and perhaps a few more things. If I put my mind to it I'm sure I could come up with more bottom line writer no-no's, but you get the idea. Yeah, descriptions vs. dialogue can be a touchy subject for a lot of writers and readers, everyone has a preference. Generally though, the rule of thumb is that if there's more than one way to imagine it, you have to decide whether you want the reader to choose a variation (in which case you can never give specifics from that point onward - and this irritates a lot of readers if it's something important, I think) or if you want them to think of something specific (in which case as you say, you have to describe it at least once, but maybe include reminders if it's something not easily remembered or doesn't come up often). Plus, description is the heart of the setting and also a tool to further reveal the character, e.g. the fact that a character will make note of certain features of the environment or focus on certain things in the given situation tells you something about them - i.e. the most sacred writers' rule can be invoked here: "show, don't tell". I spent a lot of time perfecting how to balance out descriptions, internal dialogues and vocal dialogues, and I try and mix the two liberally so that readers who prefer one or the other can both be satisfied, but also I do it so the piece is balanced (an aesthetically harmonious text will make for fluent reading; incidentally this is also why I use some unusual paragraph breaks, or why I shuffle dialogue to interrupt lengthier descriptions). Sometimes it's inevitable that you do a lot of one or the other, but in my experience having an overabundance of descriptions is preferable to too much dialogue without context - the former may get dreary after a while, but the latter is confusing, which is worse. (Unless you're writing a drama for theater, in which case your setting descriptions will be severely limited and with reason, it's the actors who fill in the gaps.) I like that I can respond on AO3, it's just sometimes I have trouble figuring out what to say, hahaha. So sometimes I answer months after someone comments... no one has complained about it, though! One would think that as a writer I have such things at my fingertips at all times, but it is not so sadly. No worries, I've replied to multiple posts before (though I was doing it in a more roundabout way, hahaha), I just meant that I usually post my fic/tag posts separate from my regular responses, I just decided to combine it this time. Let me know how you like the quarian fic! I'm really liking writing it so far, I was craving quarians in MEA so bad - guess I have to make up for the lack! I know there will be books, but... I wanted to see quarians in the existing plotline of the game, not a postscript/DLC-which-will-never-be. I can't believe they shortchanged us on quarians in an MEU game, it's criminal.

I agree, they likely don’t consider the consequences of their words. Likely thinking “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can’t.” And likely think words can’t hurt at all...they can. One can never know how fragile of a state someone is in when it comes to computer screens. I even tried to warn about that before, and they dismissed me and called me names. :smh: As Jaal said in one mission: “It’s sad how some choose to live.”
I’ve got so many story ideas in my documents that are set in Andromeda...many involving the Angara in some way, or Jaal, or Jaal/Ryder.
I agree on the more content part, understandable about the quality part. I am not done with the Jaal romance yet, its in progress, my second playthrough is in progress still. Looking forward to the scene on Aya! I don’t know about the content of the others other than what I have read and seen. I can imagine so regarding Jaal’s romance. . And I have seen the complaints about lack of content for some others. I have heard that same-sex romances got shortchanged unfortunately in cases...hope they fix it the next game since they deserve better. Agreed about MET romances being kid of sparse in some ways, more so in the earlier games. True about the first game, I tried it out recently to see the difference, and there’s a significant one regarding the graphics, especially environments. Understandable about ME3, there are people who love that game. People who hate it, etc. Not to mention the ending, that is a subject best left alone, this is a Jaal thread after all. And I agree, even despite ME3’s flaws and that ending, there is a lot of emotion in the game. Such as the Fall of Thessia, the Quarian-Geth resolution, and the mission on Tuchanka. And agreed with what it does with the relationships.
Agreed about Liara too. That Ardat Yakashi mission was...creepy! :gasp: You could hear those creepy sounds...then see what made them- the horrors known as Banshees. I feel sorry for those whose first glimpse of them was through a sniper scope...I imagine that was a nasty surprise! I wonder what Jaal would do if he saw a Banshee through his sniper scope…(poor Jaal if that did happen...
I know Garrus is very popular as a romance option. When I play through again as female!Shepard, going to do the Garrus romance to check it out for myself too, to see why others like it! .
Same here, have only tried Jaal so far, still in progress. Agreed, I like MEA’s focus on content size in terms of LI material with Jaal’s romance so far.
Agreed, love the Nomad banter too! I even stop to just read the subtitles when they talk, to make sure to not interrupt it.
I agree with romancing Jaal adds a certain flavor. And indeed, makes you look at things and other Angara in a totally different light.
Agreed, wish there was more tie-in stuff. Reactions from others. Especially if romancing Jaal. And would love to have had more moments too. And I wonder what would Evfra think of the relationship between Ryder and Jaal? What would Tann think? (I’d just ignore Tann, haha!) Sahuna knows about it though, I love Sahuna!
I agree. And true, dating the Charlatan (have never done that though) would affect pretty much anything on Kadara. Hopefully next game they fix that and includes more reactions and suchlike.
Agreed! And Jaalmance was just what I needed too!
Let me know what you think of the fic! Thanks! Will read when you post them!
I agree with you too, I believe there’s such a thing as bad concepts. And agreed, a master writer could, and someone who develops their skill to that level, could take a “bad concept” and make it into something wonderful. And I agree that writers individually have to find what speaks to them first. I feel it is the key to being able to write, and finish, a story. Especially multi-chapter ones or long ones in general.
I agree with you on your ideas of what bad concepts are- Trying to write something I don’t know (I wouldn’t do this. I’d either not do it, or do the research before doing it), doesn’t necessarily excite me (this I think is key to knowing whether one can finish the story or not...if it doesn’t excite, one will lose interest since it takes effort to make good material), or it doesn't take my mind anywhere good or useful in a way that would organically advance my plot (something else important, it is not good for a writer to shoehorn in things.). I agree, if the premise of the story just sucks, it brings the story down (basically bad execution right?).
I see what you mean. I wouldn’t write that either unless it was satire or I had gone to the Dark Side of the Force.
I agree with you that there are ill advised concepts out there a plenty. Same for some things shouldn’t be attempted unless sure one can actually pull it off, or at least make a valiant attempt (agreed on that- if one has to seriously scramble and it keeps coming out insufficiently interesting or coherent, then it’s a bad concept for whoever wrote it). That sucks when that happens, which is why I try to be careful. Yes, it’s good to try new things and be imaginative and creative, but at the same time one needs to be careful to not go way too far, or bite off more than one can chew in general. Sucks you have seen that happen, and agreed, if the premise of a story is that weak that the whole thing falls apart at the seams, means the writer bit off more than they could chew or they just didn’t put in the right amount of effort and work as it would have required. And agreed, some things are just so hard to right about convincingly in a way that captivates and holds interest, and is the reason why such things shouldn’t be attempted until one’s skill level is high enough.
As for the list of downright bad concepts you typed down, I agree with everything you said. Especially the part about intentionally offensive and inhumane things. That one is a swift way to make a lot of people mad at you. I get the idea, those were very good examples.
It appears that way. When I describe, I try not to have any more than 80 words maximum for a single paragraph of description. Though I prefer to have no more than 60 words (according to another writer’s writing tips pages on another site, the pages really helped me out). Since from my experiences I had from when I didn’t describe at all left me with the need to make sure I have description to prevent such a thing again, I try to balance it. And I try to avoid “bland” or “checklist style” description. Some things I am trying to do are- use specific nouns, use adjectives, adding color, and using the five senses.
Action, I seem to be pretty good with.
Between description and dialogue, dialogue is the hardest for me. I am hard of hearing- in order to hear at all, I have to have my cochlear implant on. And even then, it is not perfect, the sound and quality fluctuates. Which, to me, renders the strategy most people use to make sure their dialogue is good- reading it out loud- ineffective. Since I fear it makes good dialogue sound bad and bad dialogue sound good at times. To overcome that since I didn’t want my dialogue to continue to be bad, I read it out loud mentally instead. I think it’s a good idea too, like what if something happens to my cochlear implant and it quits working? It won’t disrupt my writings in that case. Would suck but wouldn’t bring things to a halt. This strategy seems to be working for me.
Also, due to the fact I require subtitles to be able to understand what characters are saying on TV and suchlike, the accessibility of the dialogue has an impact on how motivated I am to write in a certain fandom.
For example, Mass Effect’s dialogue is very easily accessible- subtitles, even the audio logs in-game in pretty much all cases it appears. So I feel much more confident that I can keep the characters in-character.
Some material has partially-accessible content. For example, the anime Naruto, a series I like. Sure, I can read the books and related stuff, but the DVDs have one problem- they have English subtitles for the Japanese audio. But no English subtitles for the English audio. So as a consequence, the English subtitles for the Japanese audio don’t match the English audio. And worse, I’ve heard the subtitles are stilted. So unless I record it on TV or have saved episodes from TV, I can’t access the true dialogue.
When it comes to another game, Overwatch, I run into more problems than Naruto. None of its videos about the characters, even in YouTube, have subtitles so I can’t enjoy them that much. Same applies to the game itself, next to no subtitles except for the tutorial. And sometimes the gameplay gets frustrating such as dying to enemy special moves that are right behind me. Subtitles would at least allow me to have a chance to try to do something. Because when I try to do the same thing to other enemy players, sometimes they react quickly enough to stop me. Sometimes I’ve gotten lucky, turned around, and caught them in the act of trying to pull their special move right behind me.
Though at least there’s the wiki pages. But sometimes even they don’t have the details most hearing people would otherwise be able to easily get by playing or watching the games or shows/movies.
The presence or lack of subtitles has an impact on my motivation to write fanfics. As having them makes it easier to be able to keep the characters in-character. Since I worry about the hate coming back if I accidentally write a character or characters out of character, which is why doing Overwatch or Naruto fanfics is more difficult.
I agree. And so true about “Show, don’t tell”. I haven’t mastered that, but I still try. And that’s good to try to balance the three, I try to do the same as well. I know I need more practice and stuff. Since I know I kind of freeze up when it comes to dialogue sometimes. I can imagine so, if that does happen in my stories, I would try to add color . And understandable. Lack of description can make things confusing. It can be a tricky balance.
Will keep practicing my dialogue and description. Maybe I can make some fanfics that are heavy in both…to see how I do.
Haha, I do the same too in the Archive…
That is understandable.
I will! I can imagine so. I wanted Quarians, and I really need more Ryder/Jaal Ama Darav so I am making an “Andromeda Challenge Fanfics” series. Which will involve Ryder/Jaal in every story in some way, wrapping up with the Quarian fic! It is also to help me get into a good writing pace, and figure out description and dialogue, figure out a good balance. I agree, it’s criminal that they shortchanged us on Quarians in an MEU game… :smh:

Agreed, wish there was more tie-in stuff. Reactions from others. Especially if romancing Jaal. And would love to have had more moments too. And I wonder what would Evfra think of the relationship between Ryder and Jaal? What would Tann think? (I’d just ignore Tann, haha!) Sahuna knows about it though, I love Sahuna! I'm pretty sure Evfra's position is: *long suffering sigh* Of course, if we're talking my Evfra, he'd probably get into a tiff with Jaal because he's competition, hahahaha. (I'm so writing that somewhere.) As to Tann... he's all about self-preservation and status quo; so long as her relationship doesn't directly tarnish his or the Andromeda Initiative's image, he would probably be politically correct about it and politely decline to stick his nose where it's unwanted (also I think he's painfully aware that he doesn't have enough authority to overrule Ryder and reign her in). Although, knowing Tann, he might exploit the fact and make a big deal out of it that they represent the future of angara-A.I. relations like some glorified prom king and queen. Totally see him doing that. Sounds like pretty sensible guidelines to start off with. The more you write, the more you will get a feel for what you pepper your story with and how, with specific types of descriptions that will comprise your unique style. When I'm writing there are a few things that I have my characters regularly focus on, specific senses I use to introduce something or someone, e.g. for romance I like to lean on smell a lot, as it's not an immediately obvious sense that you think about but if you do think about it, smell is highly significant in how you perceive someone, the specifics of how I describe it (in Resistances and Dalliances I describe Evfra as having a "moonkissed" scent most often - just think about what those words evoke in you and you're immediately more aware of how Ryder must view him: for instance, based on this scent you could say he's dark and mysterious, cool and evocative). In essence, I tie what my protagonist sees, feels, hears, etc. to what kind of emotion or thoughts it evokes - anything that doesn't provoke either emotion or thought is useless information unless it's of narrative importance. I agree with not doing checklist style descriptions, you want to make your descriptions somehow significant to the scene, the character or the setting - or better yet, a combination of those. For me, dialogue always came extremely naturally, for some reason that's just how it works for me: I see the characters in front of me and I can hear their voices and I instantly know how they would say things, it's like watching an internal movie. I mean, I have plenty of agency, but honestly? My best work happens when I don't try to interfere, I just let it play out and literally just "take notes" in the form of scenes. If I can't imagine a character saying aloud what I wrote down I delete it immediately, because that tells me that it's out of character, i.e. I'm literally putting words in their mouths - circling back to the previous point, another great description tool that immensely improves dialogue in my estimation is including facial expressions and hand gestures. It says SO much about what's going on inside someone's head even if they don't say anything. That sounds rough. I imagine that would definitely impact things, especially if you're trying to read aloud - but I agree, reading inside your head can work just fine for this. I've never actually tried that, reading out loud I mean - as I said above, normally I just "watch the movie" in my head and that has all the information I need, from that point onward I'm just picking and choosing exactly what details to include or leave out. Also, due to the fact I require subtitles to be able to understand what characters are saying on TV and suchlike, the accessibility of the dialogue has an impact on how motivated I am to write in a certain fandom. I can totally relate to this. I won't watch a movie at all if I can't understand what they're saying and there aren't subtitles to clarify, there's just too much that gets lost and I am kind of an "all or nothing" watcher/gamer - I'm not hard of hearing, but I do have trouble making out the TV clearly for some reason, so I always use subtitles anyway. I don't have this problem with games, but I like having them there anyway because it happens every once in a while that they aren't clear or articulate and I want to double check. Plus, anything that disrupts your full enjoyment of a game or movie just makes the whole experience lackluster, like I'm forgiving of a lot of technical crap, but when my game stutters, freezes, does something else totally crazy, it just kills the mood. If I couldn't understand the characters, I wouldn't understand the story by extension so of course, this matters a lot. Of the examples you mentioned, I can't believe there are games out there that don't subtitle fully! I would think that's a very basic thing to include. I'm a translator by trade apart from being a writer and I know for a fact that translating subtitles requires curtailing or rephrasing what is actually said sometimes because there are a limited amount of characters you can read before the dialogue needs to move on to the next sentence; it can be annoying, but you still lose a lot - and I mean a LOT - less content than if you are watching something dubbed. The same fundamental principle applies, there's a character limit, but for dubbing you have to match the character count almost exactly to the length of time it takes for the given character to say the words in the original language. E.g. if my source sentence is 27 characters, in all likelihood I would be required to limit my target translation to 27 characters or less - sometimes you get a little leeway, +/- a few characters, but never really much more than that, if it's dubbing. In a lot of sentences this isn't a huge issue, but in a case where one language expresses exactly the same thought with significantly less or more words, you have to rephrase it in a way that still captures the essence, but which matches the source line's length. See what I mean? In contrast, with a subtitle you have a limit, but each subtitle line is displayed for quite a few seconds, so you can add quite a few extra words - the result is that the subtitles will be a lot closer to the original meaning. As a former huge anime fan (I used to watch Naruto, too), I vastly preferred original Japanese audio with English subtitles, because even despite the restrictions of subtitles, dubbing puts a lot more pressure on the translation to conform to a foreign language's expression time. Depending on what languages you are translating between the degree of variation changes of course, e.g. between German and English, the languages are very similar (not just because English is a Germanic language, but also because we retain a lot of core similarities and derivations of same or similar words) so translating subtitles/dubbing will most likely have a nicely matching length (none of them match perfectly of course, but close enough), whereas translating between Hungarian and English (my primary language pair) you have huge differences sometimes. I have to say though, the captions they write for English audio/Eng subtitles usually misses the mark a lot because (I suspect) they use machines to automatically transcribe it instead of having a translator work a monolingual job - it's a cheap solution that produces some pretty silly mistakes. This doesn't apply to your anime example however, because the English dub and subtitles are both independently translated from the original Japanese - so you are not getting a transcription, you are getting an actual translation. It's fascinating to compare them and think about why each translator chose those solutions, but you have to keep in mind what I said above - things literally get lost in translation. Well, for this problem the best thing I could suggest is finding a beta reader, someone who is willing and able to give you detailed feedback on what works and what doesn't in your pieces. Having another pair of eyes on your work can do wonders to coherence and storytelling in general - but you have to find someone who works well with you and whose feedback you can accept. All in all, just keep practicing! Seriously, the more you write, the better you'll get.

And I agree about Tann not sticking his nose in (I can imagine at least one person has a Ryder that would...react very badly to Tann sticking his nose in...and biotics might get involved…) Sounds like pretty sensible guidelines to start off with. That is understandable, some things come extremely naturally for some people. I do the mental movie picture too, very good way to make sure to include what’s needed. And I agree so much about facial expressions and hand gestures. (a great example from Andromeda is when Teviint shot her brother, she had a look of horror as well as put her hands up on her head like she was horrified by what she had done. Loved the emotion shown, it was like she was going “Stars...what have I done?!”) It is a bit rough but not too bad these days, getting better. Like you said, just need to keep writing! It takes a little time to read them. And I’ve noticed in Andromeda if I get really into the action like an intense battle, I take my focus off the subtitles sometimes to fully focus on what’s going on. (like when one of those Kett Ascendants get too close to me, otherwise I might get caught inside their instant-kill attack and crushed, turned into a Pathfinder pancake...same applies for Fiends, they’d make me their meal...) Thanks for the suggestion, will do so if I need to. I will keep practicing! Since I love female!Ryder/Jaal, I could make some “in between” stories, explore things deeper, or something…along with the Quarian ark story (other stories could include things like maybe meeting an actual Jardaan...that’d be something! Would want him/her on my team, hopefully he/she as some awesome weapon, gear, and armor!) Time to go plot fanfics...
Also, if you want to, I’d like to hear your thoughts on my fanfics, especially the newest one. Since, I don’t know if I still have the problems or not, but the very people who’ve given me trouble in the past have said about my newer fanfics from 2014 that my characters are still completely uninteresting cardboard cut-outs, still talk like they’re in a Saturday Morning cartoon, action scenes are still very poorly paced, and said I haven’t improved much. They also said my talk of improvement is me being “full of skkut”(censored bad word, for the sake of forum readers who don’t like cuss words). Worse, the place seems to attract...types one would expect to encounter out in the Kadara badlands, one person said they wanted my fingers to be broken and my eyes poked out so I never write anything ever again. Yes, the person was called out by the others on the site for being too cruel, but still, its shudder worthy what that site attracts- people that you might run into in the Kadara badlands. I want to make sure I have gotten to a “good level” before I even start a series properly (like one about my female!Ryder from her days in the Milky Way, to Andromeda, and after the game onward...want to give Sakura Ryder and Jaal a hard earned happy ending! ).
Not going to let them stop me or get me down, I will keep practicing. Glad I gave Mass Effect Andromeda a try all those months ago. I feel sorry for those who continue to avoid it for whatever reason, they’re missing out…(if I had avoided it, I would’ve missed out on Jaal and the Angara…)

Sorry I took so long to respond, I couldn't read it right away but it was amazing. This also makes me want to re-read your first story again when I get the chance, so I can brush up. You haven't lost your touch and everyone is still wonderfully in character with Evrfa being the adorable grump that he is. Probably my favorite part - “I do not need to resort to manipulation,” he responded curtly. “If I want to use krogan, you will know about it. If I want help from you as an ally, you will know about that, too.” Such a spicy tsun tsun Ok, this is completely off topic right now and I know you mentioned something before but can't remember, but do you have Hungarian heritage? I only ask because you used Ferenc for my avatar and I thought she's serious business! or she speaks Hungarian, or she just prefers Hungarian lol. I think I mentioned this before but that is definitely one of my favorite flirts in the entire game. While I ended up forgetting a lot of the other flirts, I didn't forget that one; It's cute, awkward, sweet, honest etc. I can easily see a very shy or a very confident Ryder saying that.

Haha! That would be interesting to see in a fanfic...would read it! I'm definitely posting a link to it here once I've got something posted and I'm definitely doing that at SOME point in the story, hahaha -- stay tuned. True about writing more, I need to do that. And I agree with what you typed. And interesting about smell, didn’t know about that. Makes sense, after all, someone who smells nice is more appealing than someone who stinks. Sense of smell is actually incredibly important, it can make or break friendships and romances; you don't actually necessarily even notice it, apart from finding a potential romantic partner's scent very pleasant (or even intoxicating, hahaha), but you pick up on pheromones unconsciously and react based on it. You know that instant gut reaction you get when you meet someone who you dislike the moment you set eyes on them, or when your stomach does a backflip meeting someone you're instantly attracted to? Catching their scent makes those powerful moments all the more powerful, it's not the only thing of course, but I'm sure it's happened to everyone at least once that they meet someone they wouldn't normally find physically attractive and then suddenly find themselves daydreaming about that person - I bet you anything that's the pheromones at work. Also, an interesting fact about smell is that everyone has their own palate, one person's smell might revolt you while another person finds it irresistible, or vice versa, that tells you basically whether or not you're actually compatible with someone and of course, there's no such thing as being equally compatible with everyone (unless you're a demigod or god, hahaha - and that only happens in mythology so far as I know). Of course, that's only the initiation, you still have to find out whether you match in personality, life goals, physical "parameters", etc., etc. As I'm sure everyone can agree, courting is just SO COMPLICATED, hahahaha. And about Overwatch, some people think it will give players and advantage and suggest things like muting the audio if the subtitles are on. But really, it won’t give an advantage. It takes a little time to read them. And I’ve noticed in Andromeda if I get really into the action like an intense battle, I take my focus off the subtitles sometimes to fully focus on what’s going on. (like when one of those Kett Ascendants get too close to me, otherwise I might get caught inside their instant-kill attack and crushed, turned into a Pathfinder pancake...same applies for Fiends, they’d make me their meal...) What a totally ludicrous reason to not have subtitles! Not to mention that it's unfair to anyone who has any kind of difficulty with sound, I mean, even putting aside difficulty hearing (which by itself should make it DEFAULT for all game devs to include subtitles......) it's not like every accent is intelligible, nor is every voice/soundtrack volume pitch perfect, I mean, really. This should be a common sense thing, and I mean, people who mute the audio on games will do it anyway (never did that, never understood why anyone would want to do that, but if someone likes doing it, this won't stop them). Hahaha, Pathfinder pancake! I've had the unfortunate pleasure of turning into one quite a few times, those bosh'tets are real mean up close. lso, if you want to, I’d like to hear your thoughts on my fanfics, especially the newest one. [img src="//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/klHItdGAAakCcCdRBQyb.png" alt="[3" class="smile"] ).
Not going to let them stop me or get me down, I will keep practicing. Glad I gave Mass Effect Andromeda a try all those months ago. I feel sorry for those who continue to avoid it for whatever reason, they’re missing out…(if I had avoided it, I would’ve missed out on Jaal and the Angara…) This sounds terrible! No one deserves that kind of trash talk, seriously. I don't care if you're the worst writer in the world, this is just pure and simple abuse and no writer of any caliber deserves that. Honestly, I think you should just totally ignore what they're saying, it's clear from the tone of these comments that they're not at all interested in helping you or encouraging you in any way, so I wouldn't trust their "feedback" about your writing quality, this is emphatically not the place to take cues from. Is this on FF.net btw? Send me a writing sample and I'll take a look at it, if there's truly stuff in there which could use some work it would be my pleasure to provide you with actually useful feedback to help you improve - from that point on you can feel free to do with it as you like, just keep writing and don't give up! Also, as to posting when you're "good enough" - you're already good enough, nowhere does it say in any "all-encompassing fanfiction rules" that you are unqualified to put your stuff out there before reaching such and such a level, this is fanfiction! It's generally not professional writers who do this to begin with (though they can, of course, I consider myself one), it's for beginner writers as much as old hats, those without vision as much as for those with grand visions, equally; but in general I feel like no one should feel as though they should be ashamed of their fanfictions. Many people write these for themselves, and that's totally OK, everyone should feel free to express themselves in the worlds they love; it's not like anyone is paying us money for this. If someone happens to love your stuff, awesome! If not, then not, but at least you had the guts to put yourself out there in the first place. Feedback is a double-edged sword as you've experienced; sure, there are people out there who can give you useful observations that you can better your writing quality with, but there are also a lot of trolls out there who get their pleasure from tormenting others. Writers, like all artists, are especially susceptible because we are putting pieces of souls out on the internet for others to judge in a way... but even putting aside the obvious trolls, you have to decide whose feedback you have to disregard and whose to listen to: just like not everyone is good at writing, not everyone is good at giving feedback, you always have to keep that in mind! They're not always a reliable gauge of how good you actually are, the most I could say is that if your feedback is predominantly negative, you have room to improve - again, a totally fine thing! You can accept that without taking on any of the crap people try to unload on you. If I want help from you as an ally, you will know about that, too.” Such a spicy tsun tsun [img class="smile" src="//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/Dxg0oSZrqNcoZTskCEsA.png" alt="[3" style="max-width: 100%;"] Ok, this is completely off topic right now and I know you mentioned something before but can't remember, but do you have Hungarian heritage? I only ask because you used Ferenc for my avatar and I thought she's serious business! or she speaks Hungarian, or she just prefers Hungarian lol. Your responses are always worth the wait! I actually did just that, I reread all of R&D to regain my sense of the characters - one must always "research", hahaha. I'm glad you said that though, a lot of my R&D/LRMD is done without betas so I was a little nervous about coming off as rusty, especially since I'm trying to insert some dynamism into all my protagonists while still retaining their essence - my Evfra has evolved passed the original in-game Evfra by now, but I still want him to be recognizable to someone who would (totally inadvisably, hahahaha) start reading from that point without having read any of the preceding material I wrote. I do, hahaha, I'm Hungarian and American! I'm a first generation American, so I was born here and more or less raised here until I was 8 or so, but I'm fully bilingual (Hungarian was my first spoken language) and I lived half my life in various parts of Hungary, including some stretches during my early childhood, too. I tend to come across as more European to a lot of people because I spent all my teens and early adult life there, so it was a pretty formative experience in terms of my personality and tastes, but I'm totally at home in the US to the same degree. You could say I'm simultaneously an insider and an outsider in both countries.

same applies for Fiends, they’d make me their meal...) Your responses are always worth the wait! I can tell your Evfra softened around the edges a bit, at least when it comes to Ryder but he lost none of his wit or bite, actually he still challenges your Ryder a bit but he's no push over and it's just the right amount. It attests to your great ability as a writer to give believable character development and still have them instantly recognizable. I instantly hear Evfra's Australian accent when I read your stories and that doesn't always happen when I read other people's fics. Aww I knew you were American and hope it didn't seem like I was being an asshole and implying otherwise, I just thought I remembered you talking about Hungarian before. Lucky you though, being able to speak Hungarian. For some god unknown reason my grandparents when they got here did not want to teach their children another language and therefor I am at a disadvantage. I think they just didn't want their kids understanding when they cursed or whatever, who knows . Despite that lol, I thought I would learn polish to honor my grandpa's memory, plus I just like the way it sounds. However when I check my library out online I only find materiel for Spanish, French, Italian etc. but no Polish, forgotten and unloved....and I don't even care for the romance languages because they sound like mush to my ears, especially French so that's not happening. Curiously, there were some full on pimsleur Hungarian courses. I thought about heading down and checking them all out because it looks fun and sounds nice but ya know, it might take me about 10 years or more to learn. Anyway if you ever want to study another language, I always recommend checking out free language CD's at the library. I also absolutely would not recommend downloading them to your computer for free because of how expensive they're otherwise.......nope..........

That's a very good sign indeed... all those years writing my stories were good for something after all, hahaha. I really should just get my finished stuff published already, I don't even have a good excuse anymore. (Except that CERTAIN ANGARA and a quarian keep distracting me..........................) Aww I knew you were American and hope it didn't seem like I was being an asshole and implying otherwise, I just thought I remembered you talking about Hungarian before. Curiously, there were some full on pimsleur Hungarian courses. I thought about heading down and checking them all out because it looks fun and sounds nice but ya know, it might take me about 10 years or more to learn. You remembered right! I did mention this before, I think twice actually, but that was ages ago when the thread was still super active and I don't rightly remember how and when it came up the first time. I believe there were several other Hungarians also posting here for a while, that was the second time it came up. You know, in our household my parents used English as their "secret language" for a while, until they realized that even though I only speak Hungarian I understand both languages... so once I started attending kindergarten I picked up the speech very fast because I already understood mostly everything. That experience is the reason why I love the English language so much, also probably why I became a writer in the end. As to learning, I have encountered Pimsleur when I was studying Japanese (due to the cultural interest I had during my teens, I'm less enthusiastic now but I've retained a lot of the basics I learned), but I branched out to taking some actual language courses during university (French, Italian, Finnish) and I had some background in study (German and Spanish - not a huge fan of the latter TBH, but I was really good at it). I've gone on to study German on my own after my successful 2 years + utterly failed 4 years of study in high school (I have some family in Austria and both my parents speak it to some degree, so I felt a little pressure to choose that over other languages when the time came to select an elective language - really enjoyed it at first, had a great friend to practice with and I was good at it, then I moved to Hungary where language education is mostly crap and I lost a lot of my contemporary knowledge in favor of abstract grammar that wasn't tied to actual language use... I could complain at length about it), Italian during university as I mentioned (my family is Italian on my father's side, so I'm interested in that one for heritage reasons - my grandfather was still born in Rome, but my dad was born in Budapest already, I'm still actively learning it), French, again as I mentioned (my mom is a huge fan of the language and speaks it, so it seemed only natural, I like it to some degree because of the challenges it presents, but the bloody preposition system they use is just insane; haven't brushed up on it in ages), Finnish, ditto (I quit after 2 weeks, lol - it's in the same language family as Hungarian, but it's not even close to each other in reality, plus I was already studying French AND Italian at the time, so it dropped off the map), Gaelic on my own (cultural fascination, didn't get very far), Polish on my own (a while back I got really caught up in the idea of moving to Poland to do game design and I found the language very interesting, I admit in large part due to parallels I found between Poland and Hungary, culturally, historically and in other things that I partly started discovering due to the Witcher - I'd still like to learn, but it's been put on the back burner for the moment like a lot of other languages I've dabbled in, including the aforementioned Gaelic and Japanese), also I've taken lessons in Welsh, Norwegian, Romanian, Turkish and Arabic because I'm just a huge language nerd in case that wasn't obvious, hahahaha, and I could go on. (And by "I could go on" I mean I've also studied Tolkienian Elvish, Star Trek's Klingon, Romulan and Vulcan and other nerdy languages, because I'm an "in general" nerd, too!) Don't be too impressed by that list though, when I say I dabbled I mean I got through a few lessons and that's about it, though some really caught my interest and I took to a farther degree than others; and I do intend to learn all these at some point once I toyed with the notion at some point, but there's only so much of me and so much energy I can split between so many directions. Right now my (less insane) goal is to learn Italian fully first, because I find it easy and wonderful, plus I'm very drawn to Italy partly because I want to discover more of my heritage and explore my roots (I have such fascinating family stories, who could resist??), and second, to brush up on my German because I have all the passive knowledge for almost fluent conversational German in my head, I just haven't practiced in years. I'm sure I could get it back up to the point where I can use it actively if I put some effort into it, so every once in a while I'll get back into it - and THEN once I've finished with those two I intend to move on to the next awesome language I must know, because I just... must know these things? I'm extremely interested in other cultures and how they mesh with or diverge from those I am more intimately familiar with or have ties to (and other reasons of the moment), plus I'm a proper linguist and translator with a degree and all, I don't intend to just let all that knowledge about the commonalities of languages fall by the wayside! I could do with a sight more discipline of course and actually study hard enough to be able to say more than "one loaf of bread, please" or some such, but once we're on the subject of language learning tools, I highly recommend Duolingo - it's a free app and it's pretty good with bite-sized lessons you can do day to day which are perfect for someone like me who a. has no time, and b. has poor follow-through on occasion. It's similar to Pimsleur in that it's active knowledge-based instead of being grammar-centric, each language has its own unique lesson plan and it's got pretty much everything you need, including proper grammar lessons/summaries and live, translatable sources if you go on their website. It uses some pretty useful algorithms to determine your weakest spots in the language, too, so if you keep practicing with the "strengthen your skills" function it will give you questions that target those weaknesses so you can shore up, and also it has a pretty good "cheat" system which is useful in learning the forms if you keep forgetting (plus there's a discussion tab you can look at where people - including native speakers sometimes - explain the more difficult to understand sentences, etc.) and other things. All in all I like it, and you can report any mistakes you find or if you think your answer should have been accepted, too, so it's constantly improving based on feedback. From my experiences so far, so long as I actually take 5 minutes out of each day to do a lesson or two, I feel like my grasp of the language is steadily evolving to the point where I'm starting to understand Italian newscasts almost to the degree I understand German, so that's a good sign! Of course, the best way is to immerse yourself directly in the language through first-hand experience, but that's usually easier said than done. I know for a fact they have Polish (and Hungarian now!), if you want to check it out. (If you ever decide to go down that rocky road of learning Hungarian, let me know. I can help. ) Anyway if you ever want to study another language, I always recommend checking out free language CD's at the library. I also absolutely would not recommend downloading them to your computer for free because of how expensive they're otherwise.......nope.......... Hahahahahaha I would never! Have never!

Gah, How am I not going to be impressed? I'm struggling to learn one and you already know two of the most beautiful, at least imo. I've said before that I've been studying German but I still suck at it. I'm a little better now, at least when my brain is not bogged down I can watch a movie and understand around 90%. However my main problem is constructing my own sentences, it's so weird being able to understand what someone is saying but only have the capabilities of speaking like a child or sometimes not being able to speak at all. My German professor says speaking is usually what comes last for most people but he's exceptionally kind so I doubt he would tell me if he thought I was an idiot. At least now I appreciate The and A in English more, I didn't really need a zillion ways to say the with different genders and all the cases, thanks Deutsch! . I also love languages and they always fascinated me but they don't love me back, so what I'm trying to say is that it's pretty awesome you're a language nerd and a linguist and I think I would try to be a language nerd too, if only I didn't have the memory of a goldfish. My grandfather was actually really good with languages and also learned Italian for my grandmother, however every time she was asked if she would learn Polish for him her answer was always nope not a chance. My grandma on my dad's side was actually French and it was hilarious to see when she would get angry with him and revert back into French just to yell, I could never take it seriously though. I can't really explain why I never liked French all that much, I just think I like a crisper sound if that makes sense? I feel a little guilty about it sometimes. Thank you for the duolingo recommendation, I've heard of it but never actually downloaded it for some reason but I'll check it out now. I used to use babbel when it was free but it's not now and I'm too cheap, or it's more that my expenses are spread too thin. It's not that I'm not willing to pay to learn a language, it's just that if I pay I would rather pay for classes like for my German etc. Anyway, I do feel like I'm at a point where I can reasonably start studying a second language now without feeling too confused. I'll mull over it some more on either the Polish or Hungarian; Hmm the Language of my heritage or the heritage of my favorite composer? I also quite like Russian and would like to learn that someday as well, I just don't like it as much as the other two so it has to wait. I find that life is too short to do or study everything I want and I also grossly mismanage my free time because I can get pretty obsessive while studying something. As of now I'm just practicing the Piano whenever I get the chance for hours into the night and into the early morning and this makes me neglect my language study....not good, or healthy really. oh and which Tolkien elvish did you study Sindarin or Quenya? I speak neither but that sounds awesome, I've always wanted to learn a little Quenya.....one day. I mean you have to do what you love right? This sounds amazing to me I literally melt listening to it *ahem.* Anywho I'm rambling now so I'll let you go, you probably see my comments and go not again lel. oh and about Jaal, wow time flies. Happy Birthday Andromeda, shame it couldn't continue.

Yesterday was March 21st...the release date of Mass Effect Andromeda. Sure, I didn’t buy it right away, but when I did, I went in expecting it to be terrible. And it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as people were claiming it to be. Sure, its not perfect, but it has great things and potential- Jaal, the Angara, the Kett, and the potential of the Andromeda galaxy. Who knows what new things (and new horrors) are out there? If we don’t get any new stuff, especially regarding the Angara and the Kett, as well as Ryder and squad, it will be up to us to continue the story. Hope we do get new stuff and continue the story of Ryder and the squad and crew of the Tempest. I'm definitely posting a link to it here once I've got something posted and I'm definitely doing that at SOME point in the story, hahaha -- stay tuned. Looking forward to it, haha! Interesting! My sense of smell is not really that good, sometimes I can’t seem to but strong stuff I can smell. But I get what you mean. Thanks for the insight, learned some new things. What a totally ludicrous reason to not have subtitles! I agree with all you said. Hahaha, Pathfinder pancake! I've had the unfortunate pleasure of turning into one quite a few times, those bosh'tets are real mean up close. Agreed, those Kett Ascendants are real mean up close. Have you had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing a squad member in single-player or teammate in multiplayer get crushed by a Kett Ascendant? I have seen teammates get crushed in multiplayer, not sure if I have seen a squad member get crushed in single player. If that happens to Jaal...there will be biotic fury… I can imagine this- Sakura Ryder: :sob: I loved him, you [translator glitches]! Kett Ascendant: :gasp: Oh [translator glitches]!!! *Kett Ascendant gets annihilated by biotics* What would your Ryder unleash in fury- Biotics? Tech powers? Combat powers? A mix of them? This sounds terrible! I agree...some people are just cruel. :smh: I will ignore them. It wasn’t Fanfiction.net. It was a different site, a posting board. It is in no way related to any Bioware games or any fandoms I am into. I don’t want to name the site, afraid it’ll somehow attract them here. Would hate for that to happen and then they spread their toxicity here. That would really suck. (I can send a PM, if that’s possible, and give you the name of the posting board as well as a link if you want). Send me a writing sample and I'll take a look at it, if there's truly stuff in there which could use some work it would be my pleasure to provide you with actually useful feedback to help you improve - from that point on you can feel free to do with it as you like, just keep writing and don't give up!
I will do so if needed, thanks! And I won’t give up!
Thanks for your kind words! So true, it takes guts to put your stuff out there…and true, people write for many reasons.
So true.
Agree with what you said.

At least now I appreciate The and A in English more, I didn't really need a zillion ways to say the with different genders and all the cases, thanks Deutsch! . Hahaha well, I'm not sure it's fair to give me credit for understanding English and Hungarian, I mean both are my mother tongues so it's not like I put in a huge effort into learning it as a foreign language - that's much harder! I mean, OK, I did build a giant vocabulary beyond my contemporaries and I actually had to relearn Hungarian grammar from the ground up (despite being fluent already) because I hadn't practiced it quite as much as English, but still, I had huge advantages to help me with that, I already spoke and understood both very well relatively speaking. I think I have a very good understanding of languages in general because I'm bilingual and I can sort of mentally differentiate between the underlying logic in a way that native speakers of just one language sometimes have difficulty with (I studied this phenomenon at uni, among other things), but that didn't help me much in learning new languages, I think in some other ways having two very different languages already at my fingertips sort of made me expect to be able to just "get" languages without much study and that's hurt my ability to learn new ones... that, or I'm just lazy and have good excuses to hide behind? I mean, I learned several languages up to the brink of fluency only to flop on simple things like figuring out when and how to use what tenses or just because my vocabulary was seriously limited compared to what you'd need to speak more than the basics. (I still have nightmares of my high school German teacher frowning at me disapprovingly as I fail to make the right choice between Akkusativ and Dativ, hahaha.) That's a pretty damn good ratio!! I'm roughly the same I think with understanding German, but I could definitely do with way more exposure and practice, it's been a long time since I've had confidence speaking it. (And understanding a language without being able to speak it is the story of my life in some ways, lol.) I agree about formulating your own sentences coming last - I got around that originally by just having entire German conversations in my head with myself (or muttering it when no one was around, hahaha) but by far the best was when my best friend and I attended classes together and we had this competition going on between us; we were always trying to outsmart each other in German with words the other didn't know (I kept winning that as soon as I learned "doch", hahahaha - no good response to that at the level of proficiency we were at) and we kept talking in German in German class (drove our teacher mad, but she always struggled with punishing us because, as she put it, we are technically practicing and she doesn't want to discourage that ). Seriously though, if you understand that much it's really not a big leap to just fill in the blanks and start using it - just approach it the same way children learn their mother tongues, they just babble without regard to grammar and somehow they pick it right up without cracking a single book. Actually, that's another reason why I love Duolingo - it forces you to speak the language and retrieve passive information regularly, so it builds your confidence even while you're learning it from the ground up. Also there's a proficiency placement test you can do so you don't have to start from the very beginning if, like you say with German, you already have some level of proficiency (it will still help you refresh your memory from the very beginning if you need it here and there). I also love languages and they always fascinated me but they don't love me back, so what I'm trying to say is that it's pretty awesome you're a language nerd and a linguist and I think I would try to be a language nerd too, if only I didn't have the memory of a goldfish. The trick is to figure out exactly what kind of learning suits you! Trust me, there's definitely more than one way to learn a language and a lot of the time when people tell me they can't do it or they're bad at it, the real problem they have is that they didn't have the right teacher/method of instruction that actually works for them. I've seen people who are self-proclaimed absolutely lousy learners grasp English in a matter of months where they struggled for years before that, once they started applying some techniques at a course I was involved in (my dad and one of his best friends hold these courses regularly about what we call natural language learning in NLP; I know all the basics and was one of the "secret instructors" and I've applied these methods myself, but as I mentioned above my main issue is laziness combined with impatience - I have seen great improvement the more I actually do it, though ). That being said, there's a lot that's difficult to learn without being immersed in the language and culture in question, you can shave off years and years of study just by going to a country where they speak the language, but it's not impossible to do it on your own, it just requires a little more diligence than what I have on hand, hahaha. (Actually though, I shouldn't say that, I've learned a lot of Italian recently, I just haven't had much time to really practice it in a more active way, I'm pretty sure if we started chatting in Italian I would do OK so long as I had a dictionary on hand for those handful of words that constantly elude me, hahaha.) My grandfather was actually really good with languages and also learned Italian for my grandmother, however every time she was asked if she would learn Polish for him her answer was always nope not a chance. Awwwwww. Polish is not the easiest language, that's for sure! I haven't tried learning many languages that are more difficult than Hungarian, so my perspective is a little different - Finnish was definitely heading that list, however! - but I know from the little I learned already that it's got some complexities that can make your brain spin. I really liked it, though, it's one of those languages I fully intend to learn once I'm done with Italian and German, I felt a connection there like I was meant to learn it someday. Let me know how you like it! I feel your pain, I've always felt moody about being obstructed by the monetary aspect of learning - I'm a firm believer in free education, hahaha - and that's deterred me from a lot of language learning programs in the beginning. There are ways around that, of course... I would say learn both, but I know from experience it's a much better idea to tackle them one at a time. Hungarian can be quite challenging, but for that one at least you've got me to explain things, hahaha, it's a beautiful language full of untranslatable nuances. Plus then you'd get to read some of our magnificent poetry in their original form! Hungarian poets are quite venerated to this day in Hungary with reason. *Hungarian sales pitch* (It makes German look like a piece of cake even considering all the genders and other complications, hahaha - but also if you've studied German you'll have a much easier time grasping the prefixes and suffixes, so there's that.) You know that originally English had the same kind of conjugation and gender differentiation as German still does? The only trace left of that is the "s" in the third person, genders went even earlier, by the time Middle English came around it had all but died out, favoring masculine forms. (I also studied Old and Middle English, absolutely absorbing stuff!) oh and which Tolkien elvish did you study Sindarin or Quenya? I speak neither but that sounds awesome, I've always wanted to learn a little Quenya.....one day. I mean you have to do what you love right? Both! You know, it's got some interesting linguistic parallels where you can follow along Tolkien's linguistic thought process, essentially relying on the same "networking" that all present and past languages rely on, but I never really got too far with it except to learn a handful of phrases I would throw at disinterested people. No one wanted to practice with me... *sob* but I do love listening to it/ singing it because I do that sort of thing! This sounds amazing to me I literally melt listening to it *ahem.* Oh, yeah. *fans self* I feel ya. Anywho I'm rambling now so I'll let you go, you probably see my comments and go not again lel. Nuuuu don't stop rambling! How else am I supposed to unleash my rambliness?? And JAAL... once we're "on the subject", hahaha - I can't believe it's been a year already. Wish it turned out differently, I really do, but hey, that's what fanfics are for, right??? (I know, I know, one sentence on Jaal in this wall of text, terrible! But in my defense, it's so quiet here apart from what, 4 of us? Where did everyone goooo??)

If we don’t get any new stuff, especially regarding the Angara and the Kett, as well as Ryder and squad, it will be up to us to continue the story. No fear there, we'll pick up the slack, Bioware!! My sense of smell is not really that good, sometimes I can’t seem to but strong stuff I can smell. But I get what you mean. Thanks for the insight, learned some new things. That's the beauty of pheromones - your sense of smell can be very poor and you'll still pick up on them and react to it instinctively. The human body is pretty amazing that way. (I don't even know why I know things like this, hahahaha, I just tend to retain most weird information that crosses my path.) Have you had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing a squad member in single-player or teammate in multiplayer get crushed by a Kett Ascendant? I have seen teammates get crushed in multiplayer, not sure if I have seen a squad member get crushed in single player. You know, not really! I always assumed it's because I'm the only one on the team stupid enough to go that close... but after the first time I avoided it like the plague, bouncing away with my super biotics to a very safe distance, hahaha. My team mates just scatter and I barely pay attention to what they're doing. What would your Ryder unleash in fury- Biotics? Tech powers? Combat powers? A mix of them? I AM A BIOTIC GOD! (Actually depends on which PT we're talking, in the one I'm playing right now I'm all about the tech.) Seriously though, biotics are so overpowered in this game, I'm a slaughtering machine on hard, all I do is Biotic Charge, Nova, asari sword slash (only when really necessary), repeat ad nauseam - next PT I'm trying insanity and see how I fare. For bosses and tougher enemies I may actually fire my weapon, hahaha. To answer the question in a broader sense though, I really love combining powers; right now I'm doing a more or less pure PT for each major direction so I can try out all the associated abilities, get a feel for my favorites from each category, but it took me a while to move away from biotics (my canon from MET was a Vanguard for femShep and Infiltrator for maleShep, so I wanted to start with a Vanguard-esque PT before I tried the others - started off as an Operative with the cloak ability though, hahaha). I understand your reasons. If you feel like sharing sure, shoot me a PM - I don't want to bring anything down on you though, or pry if you don't want. I gave up posting on forums a long time ago when I was last writing fanfiction, I didn't have such a hard time of it, but it was a different time and I was writing in a very different style, I can totally understand if you want the past to remain the past.

This reminds me, so many native English speakers take their language for granted (not referring to you, mainly me and the people I take my classes with). Someone might speak correctly but not understand why, they just know because of years of repetition. I laughed remembering how my German professor had to shamefully teach some English grammar in German class to help people better understand the German grammar.....poor guy, probably had an aneurysm afterwards. As for bungling up Akkusativ and Dativ, that was the bane of my existence. Actually you hit on something when you mentioned confidence speaking it. My inability to speak it probably stems from a lack of confidence and I'm sure it has greatly slowed my progress. I get embarrassed easily when I make mistakes but you have to make mistakes to learn. Thanks for mentioning about talking to yourself, I think I'll take this advice....at least when no one is around. It's silly but I tend to learn a lot faster while listening to music in the language I'm studying. Unfortunately I can't learn everything a language has to offer like that and the subject matter can be strange at times. Are your dad's NLP courses just for learning English, or other languages as well? I do plan on taking a trip to Germany eventually, there is nothing like forcing yourself into a dangerous language situation that you can't be lazy with or escape from. However I’ve heard stories from friends that visited and they said most of the Germans would speak to them in English, even while they were trying to answer in German. Idk how common that is but I also have another friend who is married to a German and he refuses to speak German with her until she gets good. That would be my luck. I wish I could help you with Italian, unfortunately the only thing I picked up are swear words and music notations :/ Sales pitch away! I'm sure Hungarian poetry is beautiful and I love poetry. This might be a little embarrassing but I originally fell in love with German when I heard someone recite Die Lorelei. Gender is the worst, I'll never forget when I had my first test in a beginning German class and got all the vocabulary down except for the Der, Die Das and I failed because of it, good times. However I'm pretty stubborn, so as long as a language is attractive to my ears I don't quit. I guess I'll be having some more gender fun for the win. Ahh That was back when English sounded completely badass, unfortunately imo English started to lose some of it's charm and flavor by the time middle English popped up. I've always wanted to delve into Old English myself, don't know what I would use it for but sometimes I just like knowledge for the sake of knowledge. I’ll often look up youtube videos of Beowulf readings to listen to it. I'm kind of sad it changed so drastically. If you insist . Honestly my talkative moods change like the wind and most of the time I'm pretty quiet and introverted. Someone will know when I'm comfortable talking to them because I won't shut up. You sing in elvish? Well in fairness to you it's not like I talked much about Jaal either in my block of text. I feel that there is a lot more lore in DA to discuss, so it's shelf life is longer and the lack of DLC for Andromeda was probably the last nail in the coffin.

No fear there, we'll pick up the slack, Bioware!! Haha, indeed! I am cooking up some Andromeda story ideas of various types to practice. One is a what if involving what if Jaal’s father was found alive, in a Kett camp somewhere, most likely Voeld? I know it would likely have been 15-20 years...I don’t think it was ever exactly said what happens and is done in the Kett camps, other than the implications and evidence they’re horrible. So I’d imagine his condition wouldn’t be good at all, wouldn’t be surprised if the Angara medic is beside himself/herself at the condition...plus I think its rare to survive that long...(poor Jaal is going to need hugs. And poor Sahuna... ) I have other ideas, of course including the story involving the Quarian Ark. That's the beauty of pheromones - your sense of smell can be very poor and you'll still pick up on them and react to it instinctively. The human body is pretty amazing that way. (I don't even know why I know things like this, hahahaha, I just tend to retain most weird information that crosses my path.) Interesting! Haha, bet it helps to create unique stuff in fanfics! You know, not really! I always assumed it's because I'm the only one on the team stupid enough to go that close... but after the first time I avoided it like the plague, bouncing away with my super biotics to a very safe distance, hahaha. My team mates just scatter and I barely pay attention to what they're doing. You aren’t the only one who got that close...I have the unfortunate pleasure of it happening too in multiplayer. I’ve had Ascendants teleport...right behind me. Once I see that familiar energy field...I am like- “Oh (translator glitches)!” *runs and evades as fast as possible* Sometimes I’ve escaped with such little time to spare that the instant-kill bubble was forming when I got out of it, yikes! Sometimes I am not so lucky... Speaking of multiplayer, do you ever go “Oh no...” when someone fails to extract during a match against Kett? Because we all know what they do to those they take alive...*shudder* :gasp: . Hope your tech playthrough goes well!
Interesting! Experimenting with the powers in the game and how you can mix and match is fun!
Indeed! Adding powers like Warp and Flare would only make Ryder more powerful. And that’s a good one! Love using the Asari Sword slash as well! Sometimes I just dance through the bad guys with the sword if possible. I wonder how any surviving bad guys of the battle are going to explain that to their superiors if they’re still alive- “The Pathfinder was hacking us down one by one...with a sword...and dancing through us.”
A mighty biotic wind will blow upon the Kett! Sakura Ryder is all about the biotics, haha! I love using Singularity + Double Throw for biotic explosions! And Backlash is a lifesaver, love using that to make enemies hurt themselves. Also like Pull + Throw when used to grip one or more unfortunate foes, then hurl them. Works on explosive things too…
Going to try experimenting with different biotic combinations. Would be neat if they brought back powers like Warp and Flare. Imagine the potential…
This is what I imagine some unfortunate Kett were saying on the battlefield as they faced Sakura Ryder, Jaal, and Peebee-
Random Kett soldier: *sees Pathfinder Ryder surrounded in a biotic aura and having lifted many explosive things* “Run! It’s going to kill us all!!!” *turns to run and hears stuff flying and turns head* “Oh [translator glitches]!!!” *KABOOM!*
Kett soldier: *glares at another Kett for shooting Pathfinder’s Backlash shield which directed the gunfire right at him* You foo! You shot me! Don’t shoot at that shield, it’s redirecting our fire right at us!” *gets picked up by Peebee’s Pull* Noooooooooooooooooo! *gets hit by Throw* I am blasting off again! (see what I did there? Haha!)
I’d rather just leave it in the past. After all, it is behind me now.
That is understandable.
Thanks for understanding.

*sees lack of Jaal Ama Darav in the thread lately* That won’t do… About Jaal’s scar on his left neck flap- how did he get the scar? Looks like someone either shot him, or slashed him with some blade… About Sahuna and Jaal- would be a heck of a tearjerker if someone were to do a fanfic of the day Jaal’s father disappeared. I can only imagine the tears that were shed that day. I would hate to be the Angara who had to bring that terrible news… Adding to the above, imagine how grief-stricken Sahuna would be if Jaal were to get taken, worse Exalted, by the Kett...I would hate to have to tell her… I wonder if Sahuna ever had dreams involving something like the above happening, horrible nightmares. Imagine a call to the Tempest...and for the Tempest its the middle of the night...Kallo at least would be awake most likely...(that gives me an idea… *runs off to plot more fanfics*) And somewhere on this thread, someone said that someone most likely has done a fanfic where Jaal was Exalted...that’s correct. Here it is, get the tissues ready for I did cry - archiveofourown.org/works/10611351/chapters/23465028

Things have been quiet in this thread lately…
A question- what Angara related things would you want to see in a future game, book, or comic?
I would love to see more of Aya other than the areas we’ve visited. Maybe some kind of mystery investigation? Like, maybe a villain tampers with the nutrient paste...Ryder, Jaal, and an Angara detective has to get to the bottom of things before whoever is behind it ends up ruining everything done to build up the alliance between the Initiative and the Angara…
Speaking of books and comics, I’d love to see one about how Evfra started up the Resistance, and when he freed that camp and killed a bunch of Kett. Maybe one about the early days of the Kett invasion, like how everything started. Or even what happened at the time of release of the Scourge. There’s more but those are what I thought of.
I read somewhere, most likely this thread, where someone wondered how the Angara lost so much to the Scourge. And I had a horrific thought-
The Angara most likely had Remnant tech in nearly everything. Might have even had the stuff implanted (like that one poor Angara pilot whose corpse we find centuries after the Scourge made him crash into that ravine on Havarl, it appears as if a Scourge tendril appeared...in his helmet! And it appears the tendril didn’t stay, but was enough to likely have killed the pilot and made the ship crash, since all that was seen was a ‘Scourge burn mark’ or something like that).
The Scourge, when it went off, likely rendered it inoperable, and their data they had in Remnant tech? Likely lost, destroyed, or corrupted. Though not all of it, some seems to be locked and encrypted, as Avela said they had found such data but had to figure out how their ancestors encrypted it.
That leads me to wonder- in the first hundred years, did any attempts at trying to use Remnant tech result in bad things happening? Like maybe Scourge tendrils appearing and causing injury and death while destroying the tech that was used? Would explain why some data might be recoverable, because they didn’t try to use it until long after the Scourge disaster.
Would explain the hundred year darkness, they likely had to wean themselves off the tech, as it was no longer safe to use with the Scourge being that active.
Makes me wonder what the hundred years was like…
Gwyvian : Hope things are going well!

Haha, I don’t blame you. Exaltation would be truly awful. If the Kett tried to do that to Jaal, Sakura Ryder would unleash biotic fury.
Just wondering, who is Jill? A character in Andromeda? Think I have seen the name somewhere...
I agree, long live Jaal!

Think I have seen the name somewhere... I agree, long live Jaal! She's the worst character in the game. She guilt trips the only gay male character (that's romanceable anyway) in the game into fathering her child-by saying he isn't doing his duty as a man if he's not having babies. She's also voiced by a contest winner-which I feel bad that she won a contest and got to voice the most hated character in the game (at least by LGBT friendly players that realize just how messed up that content is).
