As the topic suggests, I believe it's very possible that Scott and Sara's names are set and unchangeable.
In all previous modern Bioware games, promotional material didn't name Sheppard as Jon or Jane. Sheppard was always just Sheppard, Hawke was always just Hawke. The Inquisitor was always the Inquisitor.
However, this time Bioware has released Ryder's names, and has repeated them in a lot of interviews. Even the latest briefing calls them by their first names.
Now, I know the evidence is circumstantial at best, but I would welcome this change. I know that some people would be unhappy with it, but I'd approve. After all, Sheppard's first name was completely customisable... And completely irrelevant. It was really only used to differentiate between save files. Everyone called them "Commander" or "Sheppard," which I find unrealistic. I'm sorry, but if we've worked together for years, or if you've seen me naked, I think you've earned the right to call me by my first name.
It would add a layer of realism if, for example, Cora started the game by calling you 'Ryder,' but as your relationship progressed she started calling your character Scott.

They already confirmed we can change our PC's name. If we use the default it'll be used howewer instead of Ryder sometimes in dialogues.

Bioware has confirmed you are able to rename the sibling you choose to play as whatever you want, same as before. The only Ryder sibling you can't rename is the one you aren't playing as. That said, if you keep the default name there will be a few characters that refer to you as Scott or Sarah rather than Ryder.

They also confirmed you can't change the name of the unplayed sibling. Specifically so that when your character calls on them they don't have to say "Ryder". So if you're playing Scott you'll always call your sister Sara. Makes sense though, calling your sibling by your shared last name is weird and dumb.

Thanks for the replies! I hadn't seen this info. If some characters will actually use the default name, I'll probably just use that. Same. I just went with the default John Shepard in the original trilogy, and you can't get much more bland than that! Hell, I usually got with the default appearance as well, though I may tweak it in this case. |

For the most part I didn't actually mind my character being called Shepard. Though I suppose that's because most of my friends that don't know me better as Cyonan already use my last name a lot of the time.
It would be nice if they did what Fallout 4 did and had a bunch of supported names to be used though I get why a dialogue heavy game like Mass Effect wouldn't be able to do that.
Still, might be nice for the romance scenes specifically if your lover isn't calling you "Ryder" or "Pathfinder" during intimate moments.

I heard it wasn't just the defaults but a few common names as well that may be voiced. Not quite as extensive as Fallout 4 certainly, and probably no joke names.
But yeah, getting any first name is a huge win.

Yeah, sorry, but we will be able to change our names. The only reason they're mentioning our names so much is because there are multiple Ryders. Alec will likely remain your father's name, as will Scott or Sara for your sibling depending on which sex you choose. However, the player character will have whatever name we choose, but will be referred to as Ryder.

It hardly matters; the character will be referred to as 'Ryder'. neither do I after a while but then when I don't remember using a name it's not that bad as it means I've not used it in a while so feel fine to use it again if I want. Most of the time playing these games I tend to pick my names at random. So not really a problem. |

As I mentioned before, there are a couple of questions I'd like them to answer: 1. Will it support spelling variations, like "Sarah" instead of "Sara"? 2. Can we name our Sara "Scott" or vice versa and still have it be said aloud? That should work  I'm interested to see exactly how frequently and when we'll get called Scott/Sara instead of Pathfinder/Ryder but we won't know until launch. |
