I always get called by my last name, so just being referred to as Ryder is all good with me, Josh Ryder will be my Pathfinder. If your IRL name is Scott or Sarah, this would be such an amazing thing if you're RPing. I guess any named character in a RPG would be like that then, imagine how rad it would be if your last name was Shepard or your first name Geralt *so jealous af* haha XD

I could not see your rationale. Then I'm confused. How were you arguing against it? Because I could not see it. Why were the names such a big deal if they don't change anything in game?

That's what I mean, how can anyone possibly argue against a rationale without knowing what it is? If that question is earnest, rather than rhetorical, then it's for the very reason we just established matters more to me than to you. The save file. For some, like myself, having distinctly different characters in different save files is a lot of the fun, and naming different characters (not just here, but in storytelling as a whole) has a lot of impact on how we perceive those characters. Naming my idealistic adept Eve Ryder and my pragmatic infiltrator Scarlett Ryder will be a hell of a lot more fun for me than the two of them to simply be set as Sara. You see, in this case, the rationale is entirely predicated on preference.

I'm of two minds on this. I prefer making a character as much "mine" as possible, and naming the character is a large part of that. While I like voice acting (if done well) text based games did this better, since it's easy to code in a %character-name variable in dialogue output. What name you picked actually affected the way people referred to you. A minor thing, in the grand scheme, but a level of customization that allowed me more agency in regards to the character I was playing. On one hand, having a character with a first name that will be referenced by other NPC's is a good thing. Having my Hawke in DA2 addressed as "Hawke" by family was offputting to say the least. So using Scott or Sara as my character's name scratches that itch. However, it then locks me into using a pre-determined name, which I'm not a huge fan of. I'd rather have a Fallout 4 style system where a list of names is supported, but I can see why it's likely a bit too intensive, with the amount of dialogue already in the game.
I'll probably play with the default names, because of the mention in conversations, but I wish I could use a custom name and have the same support (within reason.) Cest la vie. Game would take another year or more to make it work with 900+ names. Which is why I finished that sentence you're referencing with the red/bold/underlined phrase. My PREFERENCE would be for a list of names to be supported, but I would definitely understand if it were too burdensome to try and fit that list into the amount of dialogue this game is likely to have. Fallout 4 only had Codsworth use the name, and while it was undoubtedly cool, it would be much harder to do with more than a single (or small group) of NPC's referencing the PC. So now I'm stuck with the quandary of personalizing my Pathfinder, or sticking with the default name because it's gonna be mentioned in game.

The magnified scope of this game would up that by hundreds of NPC's ... Anyone without a super computer would be ready to storm Bioware for frying their gaming system PC or console.
