Theres this huge, gas like black stuff that circles the planet in the trailer. So lets theorize.
Maybe its some sort of kett or remnant superweapon, or maybe some sort of a natural phenomenon thats really dangerous(like makes planets barren of life or changes their ecology). Whatever it is, i get the feeling it has a huge role in the story and in Andromeda in general, could be the next big threat we have to deal with. Or maybe im just jumping the gun here, who knows?

Or it could just be nothing of importance at all and thus a waste of time speculating.
Anything is possible with space magic.

Well, whatever it is we have a name for it. In the newest trailer, our pilot Kallo Jath refers to it as 'The Scourge'.

It looks solid, like a darksteel spider web. Unless there was a cut in the trailer, the khett warship is waiting inside meaning it is probably khett technology.
My guess it is like a very large shield/defense system with low density.
It is so large that no projectile or ship can just go straight inside and hit the khett ship. With high speed spaceship, a mere shock against the web would damage or destroy a ship.
If it is indeed that it is an effective defense system, I wonder if they can manipulate it easily?

I agree with boyaki. This "Scourge" has been used by the Kett to trap the Tempest; at the end of the trailer we see the ship bursting through it.

He gets cut off at the end as the Tempest hits it, but I caught the "Scour-" part of it which can only really be Scourge with how he pronounced the part he said.

Someone in one of the threads said the stuff was used by the Kett to drain resources or do something to the planet? Not sure where they got that info for. It might be some kind of borrow from that one star trek movie.

It might be some kind of borrow from that one star trek movie. This seems very plausible, seeing how the stuff was surrounding habitat 7, and how it has changed drastically- even the gravity, which is completely unnatural.

I'm persuaded it's remnant tech, escaped from Kett control. And it does remember me a lot of this:

There's this huge, gas like black stuff that circles the planet in the trailer. So let's theorize. Space GasTM ... it's what you get when you eat Space Burritos.
If PeeBee has a Space Burrito, then you get the black stuff, some kind of chemical interaction with her biotics.
If Drack has a Space Burrito, no one notices any difference in the amount of Space GasTM ... he's a Krogan, what did you expect?
Cora and Sara don't get Space GasTM ... as far as you know.

Crazy theorie (not that I really believed it but still)
The 4k trailer (the one in a remnant vault), show us a vault hinting to a lot more of these vault across the system, one presumly the one they are on full of activities, soon after they are attacked by a swarm not met in trailer.
We see in the first cinematic a huge machine worm and an Emrakul one. What if this machine and the swarm are the exact same thing, just with a way higher number of bots. We also know from the first leak that the Khett gather Remnant technology.
What if the scourge = the full armada of Remnant swarm control by the khet. We see that the scourge as something mostly black with orange/red light depending of the scene. The same color pattern can be seen with remnant technology depending on its function Black/green, Black/blue, Black/red.
I made a huge jump in this, linking elements that already showed differences, so it probably is not the case. But the whole remnant technology is based on huge structure and maintenance robot for god-know-how-long. They having complex bots would not be too improbable to be true.

I actually heard it as the Scorch, and considering it seems to be hot inside according to the light when the ship crunches into it, I'm inclined to lean towards that interpretation. Of course, I could still be wrong.

Its the same drones in the new star trek movie. They are used for terraforming. Look its the same planet with the floating rocks and the scourge and rihanna is singing sledgehammer. Just like the Me Andromeda. The scourge is @ 1.10.

Just like the Me Andromeda. The scourge is @ 1.10. . That would fit very well with Andromeda's theme. Terraforming technology seems to be quite undeveloped in the Milk Way. But then, so is FTL travel without relays and the Arks can travel across galaxies. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Arks already posses magic terraforming technology. But if they don't, it would a huge win to aquire it. And the trailer did give a feeling that what was once a garden world is now a planet that cannot sustain human life. So maybe the Kett terraformed it to sustain their needs? Sure, the data the Ai had is millions of year old, but that's not much in geologic terms.

There's this huge, gas like black stuff that circles the planet in the trailer. So lets theorize. My impression is that it's a (possibly defensive) mesh trap (seen at 0:08 to 0:11 in trailer #2) for anything attempting to reach the planet. I'm assuming that we see the black space mesh again at 1:24 to 1:30 when the Tempest appears to be escaping from the Kett and is now on the run after their initial (and less than successful) contact experience with Arcon. Every new trailer experience leaves me with more questions, which is great and as they should do.

It's a symbiote. Clearly, the entire planet is turning into Venom and we won't have Spider-Man to save us this time.
It's probably some nanomachine cloud or something.
