At least until the Sebastian DLC hit. He ruined the perfectly balanced romance in DA2. It seems to be the trend that straight female player got more romance in recent DA games. I hope the next DA game aims for better balance. It is time for 2/2/2! I can't believe ME:A missed out on that chance. Glad they turned around, even if it was a tad late.

I'd prefer 2/4/2, since then it is more likely they have options for ace people too. Then again MEA is 2/4/2 now and yet it doesn't.

I am not a huge fan of the romances outside the companions, but i will admit that both my favourite romances from DA:I was actually the advisors, so go figure. When it comes to sexuality i really can't comment. To me there is only three, and i don't really wanna travel further down that path. I know there are variations on how people classify themself, but that is not for me. You do you. I would be fine with romances having more optional scenes, like Cora and Jaal, which would be the best of both worlds.

I really like Sebastian, and regret that he was cut out of the game into a DLC. He is the real opposition to Anders, way more so than easily amenable Fenris & have more main quests comments than Fenris, not to mention a lot of interest in Anders and a full blown conflict with him. Honestly, with Sebastian, DA2 beats KOTOR2 in terms of appealing male characters, all of them different. It's kind of like BG2 made for a female avatar I so wish I had that DLC from the get go. It's a shame his romance didn't get as good a treatment as the rest of his character. Have the squad reactions is how the kind of relationship he and Hawke have isn't a real relationship and other mean jokes like that. It'd be like if half the team made homophobic comments about a same-sex relationship. Yes, exactly like that. :/

I don't even need to have equal options, because clearly, it doesn't seem to be something Bioware strive for. I would just keep my expectations low. If they want to give the gay players the least options, then at least make those options to be high quality, at least one companion, then the contents for the bisexuals need to be differentiated from the females, not just making it for females before modifying for males like Kaidan and Reyes. The bisexual needs to be made with both guys and girls in mind. Scenes or at least dialogues need to be different, regardless of how small. Jaal is the FIRST bisexual male in Bioware game instead of a playersexual character speaking to a cardboard stand-in. Don't jam the "bisexual required the same resource" then make it obvious that the males were made with females first or have them completely identical. I give up on equal number by Bioware, all I need is the bare minimum of 2 quality options with at least one companion. I hope that Bioware gives us our FIRST gay character with no gay angst or gay storyline in the next Dragon Age game. I don't want anymore gay husbands, fag hags, family disapproval, or any of that crap. Just a gay character with an independent storyline. Lesbian characters like Sera and Samantha don't have any mention about their sexuality, the gay characters don't need to have it jam in our storyline to tell a soap story either. If you want a good representation of gay characters, it would be to make them blend in and be a part of the storyline, maybe talking about some random guy they're attracted to. That's how you make sexuality a part of someone, not having them getting sad or angst or being viewed as abnormal for not having kids like Gil and Dorian.

I definitely want high quality m/m romances. The numbers game is confusing. I don't want things to be so obviously unbalanced like they were in Andromeda's launch or Inquisition's straight male fest. However, if everyone has 2 good romances that all have quality scenes and yes-no more gay is pain story-lines-then sure 2 is fine.

Has anyone seen that episode of Yes Minister where Hacker has already solved the problem but says something like: Success is not news. I'm going to give them a disaster today, a triumph tomorrow! BioWare seem to be fans of this approach to game design.

As for the optional scenes, only Cora has one(and I'm hesitant to call that a success until all the DLC and/or sequels are done to see if it is still respected). Jaal's is just a lie since immediately after you choose it the game acts like you chose the sex route. And it's not a bug, there is genuinely no content for that choice.

From what I remember, Suvi definitely doesn't have a sex scene or even imply that they had sex, Avela has no sex scene. People like Vetra and Liam cut without showing any sex scene, so it could be head canon easily that they just kiss and cuddle or something.

The history always repeats itself. They weren't able to learn from Kaidan's story... Dragon Age team has LGBT heads in it, like David Gaider, even though he left; there are still people like Mike Laidlaw who from what people said wasn't completely straight. Dragon Age is the one game I may feel disappointed by their romance selection but more confident when it comes to representation. The game has a gay option from the get go, the next game we get 2 options, the following game, we get our first gay companion alongside a bi option. I can see progress. I could see that the DA will reach a point where everyone gets equal options with equal quality in content. Mass Effect team is more conservation in that aspect, but I don't think Dragon Age will make Mass Effect's mistakes.

Yeah, as I've said before Dragon Age: Inquisition is the shining example when it comes to Bioware and representation. Among the main group there is a gay man, a pansexual man, a lesbian, a bisexual woman, and even a woman whose writer stated can be seen as asexual or demisexual. And that's not counting all the LGBT+ characters in the rest of the game. Okay, I can respect that. As for the optional scenes, only Cora has one(and I'm hesitant to call that a success until all the DLC and/or sequels are done to see if it is still respected). People like Vetra and Liam cut without showing any sex scene, so it could be head canon easily that they just kiss and cuddle or something. When asked about it recently, Ian said that all romances were written with sex in mind, just some were explicit and others implicit. Any ambiguity is a byproduct of the implicitness. Avela may be the only one who doesn't but then again that's not a shining example of a romance. Even the game doesn't call it anything more than "a flirtation". Liam and Vetra have fade to black sex scenes, especially Vetra who fades to black right before she gives Ryder oral sex. They both also have squad banter that confirms sex was involved.

When they made Jaal bi, it definitely seems like they avoided the pitfalls they fell into when making Kaidan bi. Instead of just being the female romance with different pronouns and less content, they made the male romance with Jaal equal in content and a unique experience.

I see (accurately I will see, because I don't have time yet), that they FINALLY did good work. But still: WHY only now?

If that's what you meant with your first post, I apologize for the misunderstanding. I thought when you were talking about not learning from Kaidan that you meant how his m/m romance was handled compared to his f/m romance.

I'm over the moon happy that Jaal's romance is as well done as it is. Aside from the obvious issues that he's so flirty with the females on board, it's clearly the most well done romance we've had in a BioWare game. So I'm happy with it.
I hope in the future we can have romance options that don't flirt wildly with others though. I really personally don't see the appeal of it. I mean does anyone really want their love interest flirting with other people right in front of them? Is that a thing people like?

It's not fun especially if you don't exhaust all his flirt dialogue with PeeBee and commit and have them discuss mating and calling it a "harmless flirt" BW was smart to remove the scar comment at least, because he even asked that to Sara about impressing the ladies right before you are asked to meet his family.

It's a sad reality that we have to be worried that there will be great options for us, unlike some other demographics. You know I wonder how I would feel if I know for quite sure that there will be great options for me. If you had an abundance of options, you would be one of those hetero jerks who constantly bitches about LGB gamers "only caring about romance" instead of the "really important issues like framerate". What, there are issues with framerate? Anthem may not have romances at all, who knows, I'm sure DA4 will. (I have my fingers crossed for Lace Harding returning, but that's my personal obsession) I trust that Patrick will do the right thing and ensure that everyone has enjoyable options.

So I just headcanon Sara spanking her in private every time she flirts with someone else. Which is funny because Sara a shameless flirt with other females.
