Kinda, the thing is that they haven't really given us anything substantial yet. There's only so many thoughts one can have about gameplay and there's too little to go on to really speculate extensively on the main story since we're going to a new galaxy and all. The squad/crew are the only things that can really be speculated on due to having some scraps of info on them. I agree that there isn't much to talk about right now. The issue is, well for me anyway, that most people are talking about romances now, they'll talk about it when the game comes out and then they'll keep talking about it while they wait for another game. Like it's the most important thing in the world and nothing else mattered. And it's not just the BSN, when I go to forums for other games I see threads asking if you can romance the characters in the game and when they find out that you can't they get angry. Like the fact that they can't get their waifu or husbando were insulting to them. I understand that people enjoy romances but it gets tiring. But I said enough, I don't want it to look like I'm whining and I don't want others to get thei pitchforks ready so I'll end it at this. Naw, you don't sound like you're whining, you just have a different opinion. Everyone here should voice their thoughts about romance in this thread if they want to whether positive or negative. After all it is a romance thread. But i get what you're saying, i think it's just a matter of people liking different things and to go back to a point that I made about gameplay, the same can be said for the main story as well, you have people who create theories and talk about the main story after the game comes out, but there's only so much story content. Many people enjoy playing playing Bioware's games due to the characters so whether or not the story/lore is good or bad, if the main characters are bad, then it will bring down the enjoyment of the game quite a bit at least for me. Going back to the story comment you can say that there is only so much people can talk about the character arcs so it basically comes down to making things up after the canon, created stuff has already been discussed to the extent where you might as well just be repeating yourself. There are story mods and such, but since characters are a huge part of Bioware's game it eventually devolves into making stories up for the characters (fanfiction) or just fanboying/fangirling over the characters. Most people will just play a game and then move on to the next one after they get tired of it, not go to certain sites or social circles and talk about it extensively. if you look at a lot of comments and other things about romances you'll notice people are just joking about it: For example Hope this helped offer some perspective.

Not all people are this reasonable, sadly. I try to respect opinions of others, as you said different people enjoy different things. I'm not a romance fan and the fact that I have to "suffer through it" everwhere I go (example: romancing in games, shipping in movies, books, TV shows ect.) got me irritated enough to post about it I guess, it was building for some time. I always found interesting what others think and how they see things so the look from another perspective is appreciated

...Sometimes I think it would be the right idea to just scrap all the romance options and focus on the story and the character development/interactions... I wish. Having romances seemed like a fun thing at first. Now I have the impression that it overshadows everything else despite being optional. Replaying value would drop. For me, close to zero.

For me romance in Bioware games is a unique flavor that I could not find anywhere else. If Bioware removes romance from their games, I would still definitely play them and enjoy them, but my enjoyment would not be complete as I've come to expect from them.

I'll be honest, if there were no romances I'd probably not be playing any of the newer Bioware games at all... For me, there are many games with more interesting stories, settings, better roleplaying options and gameplay. The character interaction of which romance is a big part is what draws me to franchises like DA and ME. (This is not meant as some general criticism of Bioware btw, I'm not saying their plots or gameplay are bad, just that I, personally, prefer those aspects done differently, and find that in games by other companies. But I still play and enjoy BW stuff, mainly due to being able to roleplay a romance interwoven with a story, even if I don't like the story all that much).

I like romances but I sure do not want them in every game, I just like bioware games a lot more because it, it gives characters substance and it lets me roleplay things like FemInquisitor-noble-but-a-little-amoral-super-flirty-and-somehow-discovers-it-is-in-love-with-Josephine-in-a-sparing-match. MaleQunari-mage-and-carefree-superpolite-but-likes-hitting-hard-with-bull-it-is-like-the-house-is-coming-down. Also it is an optional thing, not sure why people would want to scrap it. No one needs to play the game like that or enjoy talking about romances.

You never had to touch on the subject and if it gets brought up, it only takes one response to stop it. Also, I can't for the life of me imagine romances in Bejeweled and Tetris so yeah not every game needs romances to be fun.

For me the romances are a small part of the enjoyment I get out of the game, but I still get enjoyment from them. Although I hate romance novels and rom coms, I love fictional narratives about something else, where a romance blossoms between two characters who interact throughout the story. And with the scope of Bioware's games, and the amount of time and effort that goes into the characters and how our relationships with them develop, it actually makes little sense to not include the possibility of romance. I mean, we have friendships, rivalries, alliances, people we can disagree with the point of killing them. We have family and people who hero-worship us and sometimes people who show up from our pasts. And romance in popular media is pretty prevalent, so it's not surprising many story-driven games include it. Even the most testosterone-laden, explosion-filled action movie will typically have the hero get the girl. I love that my female badass hero has the opportunity to get the boy in Mass Effect. Also, it's interesting to me how many people go into threads about romance topics and complain about all the focus on romance. If that's what you're selecting to read, then, yeah...? That'd be like me going into a thread on weapons and being like, 'all this talk of weapons makes me think people only care about the combat! If only they'd scrap the fights and focus more on the characters and story. And then those people can just play pure shooters instead.' (Not that I don't enjoy or care about combat - major bonus points if it's fun! - but even if it were terrible I'd still play the game.) My point being, Bioware games have always been this great big hybrid of genres that appeal to different people for different reasons. They shouldn't 'take out' something just because some players don't particularly care about it. Nor will they. Romances in Bioware games have become rather iconic for the franchise, to where, if anything, other games are beginning to emulate it (see Fallout 4's attempt, which was rather fun, even if it fell short of my hopes for it). And romances are fun to speculate on. Characters are fun to speculate on in general. And it ties into issues of inclusivity, which I enjoy talking about as well. And sometimes it's fun to get all giddy over the possibility of romancing a character I like. Gives me a taste of that thrill I used to get when crushing on a boy I liked, without having to betray my real life boyfriend now!

The reason I like the romances in bio games, is because it helps with giving pc a bit of a human angle. Voicing and personality responses help with that as well.
I would argue with the pov that romances overshadow everything else. On the contrary, imo, compared to the earlier games, where the dialogue was very much tied to the romance, the newer games put a lot more emphasis on specifically non-romantic interactions, like personal quests, friendships and scenery comment. In that respect, the significance of a romance went way down.
In the early 2000s, if I played a Bio game and chose not to romance anyone, I would pretty much play with a party of mules. But starting with KOTor 2 and Mass Effect, I can easily skip each and every flirt, and don't feel stonewalled by the companions for daring not to bed anyone.
I was playing ME and DA, and I am chuckling to myself... that's a romance? Three dialogues is a romance? Really? Back in my time, it was 30 or do you even rom, bro?

I think that something to remember is that the fact that romances are a huge deal in Bioware games all over the place (not just here or on old BSN). That means something. It means that this is a major selling point for a pretty significant part of the audience. I don't think we have any real data on it, but I vaguely remember that the ME3 stats included how many people completed a romance and it was like 60+%, which is pretty significant. So, while I am sympathetic for people who don't care much and feel that they overshadow the rest of the game, it seems like it's part of the reason why they have such a significant fanbase to begin with.
I am a big fan of them. I don't mind saying that. But I also wouldn't be too upset if they chose not to include them in a new IP. I'd be annoyed if they removed them from a current IP, but I wouldn't be sad if a new one didn't include them. But, if the rest of the game wasn't awesome, it might be enough to keep me from buying it. Not upset, just not as interested.

For me, I always loved pairing off characters or shipping them when I would play games or watch TV. My first time I played a game where I could choose someone to end up with, was Star Ocean: The Second Story. Later I played the cute sort of dating RPG called Thousand Arms. Eventually wanting to make my own stories led me to the Sims. That's when I first heard of BW because I was emailed to be a beta tester for SWTOR. I bought DA2 and never looked back with romances in games since! I even liked being able to get married in Skyrim. It's a lot of fun and adds a lot to what would be a rather generic RPG.

We sort of grew up with stuff like that, but not as in depth as DA or ME imo.

For me, discussing romances is safer than main plot, and without actually playing combat, I cannot feasibly discuss it. Talking plot leads to expectations, leads to disappointment. No desire for that. Romance talk is more fun, safer expectations wise. Plus, enjoy the competitive nature it sometimes inspires.

!!!! Azure Dreams is my favourite game of all time and it's so rare to find people that know it Anyways. I love the BioWare romances. Plenty of games have a love story but most of them are straight male hero likes a girl. The whole reason I played Mass Effect 1 was because my friend told me I could play female and romance a hot blue alien lady. I then got completely obsessed with the series and Dragon Age too. Mass Effect very quickly became one of my aspie obsessions. I like having choices in games.... any kind of choice. I like being able to choose what gear my character uses. I like character creation. I like being able to choose how to handle a situation... etc.. and romances fall under that. In ME and DA, I can create a better looking version of myself and make the choices I would make. I can romance the cute pirate lady or the asari....there aren't many other games besides the sims where I can do that. So romances in BW games are always going to be important for me. (Well, in the existing series. I don't care what happens in the new game!) Ok. Now...for MEA.. *holds up banner saying 'Vetra for LI!'*

yes, it's somewhat annoying that I have to be straight in each game...I'd wish there were more developers like Bioware who would include homosexual protagonists...

Anyone else still have their fingers crossed for a LI-information blow-out on the fourteenth? Maybe not everybody, but, a few? ( Specifically the non-straight and/or asexual ones would be magical.) What I think is more likely is that on the 14th, or maybe the week of, we'll get that magical 30-minute video highlighting a whole bunch of aspects to the game, and in the process of talking about the dialogue system, we see Ryder flirt with a character that hasn't been fully confirmed yet, or even a new character completely to highlight the "light romances" they've talked about. And/or maybe then a trailer with some flashes of footage that includes a new make-out scene with a character that isn't confirmed.

I do hope you're right and that seems like something Bioware would do lol We also have to expect the colonial affairs group on the Nexus and, I believe, combat??? At least according to the Nexus site, so they might expedite the combat one as a showcase and then introduce a colony video close to release date to really drum up the hype before the game drops.

Looks like I have to repeat myself again, but why not, we still have a few weeks till release. So no, I don't want them to scrap romances, I like them too. But maybe they should IF they are just becoming items on a checklist. There always will be demands and needs to meet like representation of x groups, lack of nudity, quality, etc. While friendships on the other hand are so much easier to do because they don’t have these 'fan restrictions'. Instead of focusing on 'what to include' they could just present us with a great story and great characters. Enjoy. If you want to bang them (the way you want) just use your imagination. ME2 was indeed a buffet table of straight options but I like the Dr. Shepard's therapy boat aspect of it more. Earn loyalty, form/continue friendships, help and be there for them. Give them arcs and meaning. I take memorable over bangable.

Memorable over bangable?

I'm very newbie in this fandom, I have devoured MET and DA games in about three months, and the one thing which make Bioware games special are the characters and the romance between them, the fact that you can be whoever you want is just icing on the cake, the awesome of awesomeness. You can compare Bioware to other games, and all its like good or bad story? checked, good or bad gameplay? checked, good or bad graphics? checked, you can like it or not, but the romances are the identifying mark of these games, which are totally optional btw I take memorable over bangable.

Well, since its like we are all gathered around a campfire and sharing our thoughts on why it is we like the romances, I thought I'd throw my marshmallows into the fire (I don't like marshmallows). I haven't played Dragon Age or any other BioWare game, but I have played the Mass Effect games incessantly from the very start, from 2007. I love them. All three equally. They are my favorite video games of all time. But I never actually got into, or started to really enjoy the romance side of the games until 2012 with ME3, where a male Shepard could finally be able to romance a male character in the game. I never bothered with romance in the other two, since I kind of liked to play Shepard how I think I'd act in that situation, roleplay and what not. And while I made a careful effort to befriend my crew without jumping into the sack with them, I never took things further, since I kind of just had it in my head that my Shepard was gay and obviously wasn't interested until Kaidan finally got his act together and confessed his feelings. And I friggin' loved their romance. ^ All the above is maybe why this time around the romance is a big thing for me. It never was during the prerelease for the others, because I was in a position of being excited by and for other aspects of the game, as well as thinking I'd likely not get any m/m romance. But with Andromeda I know there are m/m romances, and this time I want to be able to enjoy them like everyone else in so much that I want to feel that the gay male section of the fanbase are getting equal amounts of content with the romances as everyone else. Or just a decently written and meaningful m/m romance. I'm of course hyped as hellfire for every other aspect about the game, but I am equally as invested in the romances. Not hyped, since I am in the current stage of worry about the content for m/m romances at the moment, but if BioWare deliver the goods, expect me to not stay quiet in the romance threads. Oh, and yeah if the content isn't good, also expect me to not stay quiet
