I was on that plane, I was going to a bar in Kuala Lumpur, the seedy kind of gin joint you go to when you are a private eye looking for a case.
The martinis were bad and the nachos were worse. The karaoke singer was off key, but that's the kind of place you go to when you are down your luck and I was indeed down on my luck.
That's when I saw her, the bearded lady. Sully told me to look for the bearded lady.
The door creaked open on unoiled hinges as a torrent of smoke filtered out at the top, rising through the dark stairwell. Eyes shifted, glancing over towards the door as beerfish stepped across the threshold into the dimly lit interior, letting the rain drip off the brim of his ratty suede hat. The bartender stood in the corner, polishing scratched tumbler with a worn stained cloth, gave him a quick glance and went back to his conversation with the bearded lady.
"I hear you have a little problem that needs fixing" said beerfish wiping the drain drops from his trench coat.
The bearded lady combed her prime beard with a metal comb and lit a cigarrette with the other hand.
"I've got an itch that I can't seem to scratch and it's not just in the beard on my face" she said, twirling her well manicured fingers through the light curls of her rich, full beard.
Her beard was both prim and full a rare trait for one of the famed gypsy beared women of Kuala Lumpur.
"This itch, does it have anything to do with a golden idol that was last seen on a freighter heading into port" - beerfish sneered as he said these words.
"Dockworkers always seem to leave me with more than I bargained for. I might know something about that, but it's going to cost you. I've got a room upstairs, much better for a, conversation. With a private dick like you"
She lifted her cigar and pulled on it, letting the smoke trail around, before puffing it out slowly. Some of the curls of smoke curled backwards and clinged to her beard enticingly.
"I keep my dick private, we talk here where there are witnesses, tell me where the idol is or I'll tune in the coppers about your little smuggling operation" beerfish said with threat in his voice.
Out of the blue Robo appears next to the bearded lady. "What are you doing complete dorks" he shouts.
The bearded lady reached back and stroked her hand gently down Robo's back. "I appreciate you coming to my defence hon, but I think I can handle this on my own" she turned her sultry eyes to beerfish. "I see you don't play games. Very well.."
"Robo here, he knows where your idol went, he can take you out to the warehouse, just go with him and get out of my bar"
"I'll go alright and one more thing, your filet mignon is over done, the yorkshire pudding is soggy and your cherries jubilee are fired far too long" beerfish hit the bearded lady where it would hurt the most, her cooking skills.
"Keep close fish man" Robo said, loading two rounds into his laser blunderbuss. "These streets have seen many bandit, especially now, in the dead of night. If you want to see your idol, stay behind me"
The bearded lady's eye betrayed the sorrow she felt from the comment beerfish had about her food, but she managed to hold her composure as she took the corncob pipe out of her pocket and lit it. "Too bad you had a sip of the gin, you'll regret it later"
Robo led beerfish down the dark wet streets only dim lit by the flickering orange glow of a few working streetlights. They passed a shuttered five-and-dime with a homeless man huddling close to the metal gate across the door.
beerfish tossed a partially used cigarette butt at the man as they passed and continued their solidary walk down the block.
Robo was eerily silent the entire time. The only thing that mattered was getting fish man to that idol. Any lowlife that threatened beerfish was quickly discouraged by the 7 foot tall robot by his side.
They heard the roar of an engine, as a taxi suddenly careened around the corner, smashing into the streetlamp and sending it crashing to the road. Gunshots erupted from around the corner, peppering the side of the taxi with small silvery indentations.
Robo lifted his blunderbuss to his shoulder for action, as beerfish reached beneath his trenchcoat and withdrew a ridiculously long barreled six-shooter pistol.
"It's an .88 Magnum" he said, ducking into the alcove of a store window after reading the quizzical look on Robo's face.
Suddenly the door of the cab burst open and Ghost Of N7_SP3CTR3 rolled out ducking behind the car and bringing his carbine to his shoulder, sending a few rounds over the top of the cab down the street.
"Engaging attack mode" A giant rotary laser minigun slot out of Robo's chest, as he begun spraying the entire alley with suppressing fire. Bits of debris floating to the ground catched fire immediately, lighting the scene eerily.
The brick wall, perforated with holes from the powerful blast of Robo's massive chest-mounted minigun, began collapsing into the street below.
..To be continued?
An epic private eye series was born in Shoutbox 4th of January mostly by: beerfish & regack
With a little help from: Robo & catastrophy
I just typed, hopefully with not too many typos..

Who's going to direct the movie version of this? I'm thinking either James Cameron or Joel Schumacher.

The Bearded Lady had a dark secret after all. She was caught up in the rackets and had to find a way out, she needed a patsy, someone she could pin things on, and I was that patsy.

I caught up with the bearded ladies lover, his name was Raoul gascoine, a real schmuck but in my line of work you have to deal with schmucks.
I put the pressure on Raoul, told him I would spill the beans to the bearded lady about his affair with Miss Scarlett. He sneered that 'I hate you kind of sneer' but he coughed up the info pretty quick. The beareded lady was off to Zanaibar in search of a lost temple.
I booked passage on an old steamer for Zanzibar, she wasn't going to get away this time.

The ship Captain was a one eyed Arab who's love of liquor was only surpassed by his love of money. He had charged me an exorbitant amount for this trip on his skow but half of the cost was for his silence. The bearded lady had agents everywhere and she knew I was on her trail. I strapped a derringer to my ankle to go along with my trusty 45, just in case.

The ship had slowed as fog rolled in. The cabin boy brought my tea and a plate of Fig Newtons. 'How did he know that fig newtons were my favourite cookies?', I thought while sipping my tea. Just then the ship monkey grabbed a newton and scuttled off into the corner to devour it. The monkey coughed not once, not twice but thrice and then fell dead as a door nail. "Bad Figs." I mused and pushed the plate away.

The smell of this old ship was a unique combination of rust, fuel oil and sweat. Some say you get used to such smells but you really don't. The word 'bath' was as foreign to this crew as the words 'ambrosia salad'. I'd say 'At least the rum was good.' but that would be a lie. Another three days on this rust bucket and we make land, that is if we don't sink before hand.

The ship finally docked in Zanzibar. It was hot, I was sweating like a pig invited to a barbecue. Before I left the ship I deftly pick pocketed the one eyed Arab as much to each him a lesson about trying to rip off a guy like me as anything else. I had heard there was a guy known only as the 'Fat man' who sold information. Off I went in search of someone who could tell me where this 'Fat Man' could be reached.

The bar was pretty empty, but I didn’t mind. With the plague still raging, it was just as well. There was a passable Jeff Goldblum imitator on stage. Some would laugh at his jokes, some would not. I couldn’t figure out why he was still a thing; the guy had been dead for at least hundred years. I asked the bar droid for a whisky. “Cheapest synth you got”. Not that it mattered. I don’t think places like this served the real deal anyway. I had to lift my mask to get a sip. The foul liquer burned my throat going down, but boy did it feel good. Part of me was still living. Part of me was still feeling.
I looked at my watch. There were a ton of messages. Mostly Gab and E.B. asking when will I finish the book. I had no idea what that was all about. I was about to ditch the joint when she walked in. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It couldn’t be. And that was when my drunk bought cheap left eye started acting up. I was blind until the override subroutine kicked in and the Japanese made rigth eye powered on. Those Japanese sure know their prosthetics; I saw again better than ever. And I was right. It was ms. N and she gave me a nod while passing by.
I immediately knew it was high time I left. This wasn’t my scene. I was at the right bar at the wrong time. Sure, I looked tough, but my bearings and actuators were old and worn. My ninety-year-old granny could tear my limbs apart if she wanted to. And she nearly did when I forgot to feed her Guatemalan Beerfish when she was away. I don’t think it was that she loved that fish so much but rather the smell that lingered for weeks. For once I was glad I could shut down my olfactory receptors…

The Fat Man stared intently at the interloper for a long time before raising his finger in the air and starting to speak. He opened his mouth, and promptly closed it again, returning to his innermost thoughts. The room was silent, except for the dull sounds from outside of the room. A heavy blanket of steam rising lazily from the rendering vessels on the factory floor left a large patch of condensation on each of the small rectangular panes that made up the wall of windows high up in the overseer's office perch. The door opened briefly letting a cacophony of sounds break the silence as the foreman came into the room holding his cap in his hand, sweat coating his forehead. The mishmash of scents poured in the room, lavender, vanilla, lilac, sandalwood, but underneath it all, the pervasive odor of rotting meat.
"Do you know why they call me The Fat Man?", he said, suddenly.
Beads of sweat covered the upper body of the laborer, and like the windows outside, a droplet became too big, and ran down like a tear, gathering more water as it went, until it became too large, and fell off as a drip, to land on the old wooden floor at his feet. His eyes shifted, looking around the room, causing the hulking bruisers at his side to tighten their meaty grips on his upper arms. The foreman shuffled his feet at the doorway, and looked down at the floor.
"Nothing?", The Fat Man said, rhetorically. "I'd have thought a smart guy like you would have figured it out while down there on the floor..."
The laborer slumped noticeably, but he continued to be held upright by the two large men flanking him as The Fat Man leaned back against the heavy oak desk behind him. The front edge of the desk was decided worn, as was the spot on the floor where he now slid his feet out when the desk took his weight. The foreman at the back of the room had seen this happen countless times, but it always made him nervous. He shifted the worn tweed flat cap in his short and stubby fingers, and looked back down at the floor as the old metal fan rotated around and pushed a light breeze in his direction momentarily. The grill on the fan rattled as the fan jerked to a stop, then began rotating back in the other direction. The Fat Man continued.
"It's because I'm particularly fond of the soaps made from the leaf fats surrounding the kidneys... and I'm disinclined to worry about which animal it is drawn from." he said, as he waved his finger again.
Both of the heavies took a turn, maintaining their grip, but using their off hand to land a heavy punch into the lower back of the laborer, then pulling him upright again.
"Now, I'm not a bad man, far from it, I donate to charity, I take care of those who work for me, and I try to give everyone a second chance, but if you're caught again sneaking drops of rosewater from the clarifier... well... I don't think I need to say any more." The fat man waved again at the two burly men, who turned and dragged the laborer out of the office. The foreman clutched his flat cap tighter and stepped forward.
"Boss, some 'a da boys in da loadin' dock is spreadin' rumors... dey say ... dey say da Bearded Lady is back in town..."

The 'Fatman' was in fact thin and small of stature. None the less he enjoyed the joke of his nickname almost as much as he enjoyed rosewater scented soap. The Fatman thrummed his fingers of one hand on his desk as he clutched his chin with the other hand. 'So shes back, as I knew she would be back sooner or later.' he thought. His lips puckered and his brow furrowed. He continued his silent musings, 'If she is back she must have something she needs to fence, something rare, very valuable and dangerous.'
The Fatman stood up and pointed at the foreman. "Get Sully, and you and him go to the docks, sniff around and see if you can find out anything more and make sure she was not followed."
Fatman lit a cigar and put his feet up on his desk and pondered his next move.

One fat slovenly dock worker elbowed an equally fat and slovenly dock worker. "Murph will ya look at that piece of fluff over there!" Fat slovenly dock worker number two squinted. "Hmph, can't see her face due to the veil she is wearing, the body is a knock out though. And I wouldn't get any thoughts into your head Stintz, you see the size of the guy walking beside her? He is as wide as he is tall and he's at least six feet." Stintz spit on the ground, "One can always look and then imagine her later...." "Shut it Stinz! I just had breakfast and I'll lose it if you keep talking." Stintz took off his cap and scratched his bald head. "Fancy looking case she is carrying looks like Gator skin to me. Shit here comes the foreman get back to work!"
The voice behind the veiled attractive woman was like silk bathed in honey laid on velvet. "Kratz, keep an eye open. This trip is all business." She kept a tight grip on the gator skinned case. Kratz, a mountain of man with a lazy eye looked around the docks slowly. "No worries BL, if trouble comes looking for us I'll deal with it." The veiled woman smiled behind the veil, though no one could see her smile, because it was behind the veil. "Get a taxi and lets get to the hotel. We are not the most inconspicuous pair." The two of them walked towards the cab stand.

I looked on from the shadows and puffed on my cigar. 'The Bearded lady has become complacent, overconfident, not like her', I thought. Gator skinned cases are common enough here, you can find them in any of a number of shop stalls. I purchased one forthwith and made sure I haggled the price down so as to not draw attention to myself. No one pays full price here and if you do many suspicious eyes will follow you.
Now all I needed to do is to create a diversion of sorts, cop a gator case switch and I am home free. I spotted a pair of street urchins looking to sell some useless trinket or perhaps pick a pocket if they got the chance. Just what I am looking for, they put to do nicely. I caught one of boys eyes and rubbed an old bank note between thumb and for finger. The boy winked at me, elbowed his friend and tossed a ball towards me, both boys ran over next to me as I picked up the ball. "This and four more of these for you lads if you do something for me." The boys looked at each other. "Make it nine more and we'll listen master" Crafty little buggers.....

The diversion worked beautifully, better than I hoped. The little brats knew their business, a ten spot well spent. One of the boys ran up and grabbed at the Bearded Lady's veil and almost tore it free. She let out a muffled scream and grabbed at the veil to keep it in place. The other boy seeing the chance grabbed the small pouch fastened to her dress and ran off. Her goon being as stupid as he looked dropped the gator skinned case and chased after the urchin.
I was ready, a deft step from the shadows, I quickly performed the old switcheroo of the cases. It as easy enough to step back into the shadows. 'Not like the Bearded lady to be caught this unawares' I thought. No matter she is slipping. The Bearded lady looked at the Goon and barked "Where's the case you fool! Forget about the pouch!" The goon got back to the case, the one I had switched up just as another street id was making a grab for it. The kid got a bright cuff on the head and the goon trotted back to the Bearded Lady with the case. The both walked quickly off towards the quay where outgoing shops were moored. I bit off the end of a new cigar, spit it end on the ground an smiled.

I watched from a distance as the Bearded Lady harangued and swatted the befuddled goon all the way onto a steamer that was just tossing off it's ropes. I could just see the name of the steamer from afar painted on the bow. "Pretty Lady". I snickered, how ironic it was! And where was the steamer bound for? I didn't know and I didn't care I had what I wanted.
As I watched the boat fad off into the growing twilight fog it almost appeared that the Bearded lady, now at the stern of the boat, blew a kiss towards the shore. I shook my head, just my imagination.
Back at my hotel I poured a drink and wandered over to the gator skin case. And now for the prize. Knowing that one has bested one of the craftiest villains this side of asia was satisfying to me. Perhaps more satisfying than just the money I was going to make of this whole deal.
I opened the case and my jaw dropped. Inside was a large red brick with a note wrapped around it. I unfurled the note.
"Better luck next time gum shoe! I'm sure we will meet again darling! Hugs and kisses, The Bearded Lady...oh and here is a fiver so you can buy a drink and some more cigars!"
I closed my eyes and grabbed my forehead.
