Finally, some Vanguard representation. It's also interesting in that we might not have a "pure" biotics character this time around, unless the new Alien member is a pure biotics. www.masseffect.com/news/cora-harper

The closest we got I think was probably Liara but then in the trilogy you cpouldn't unlock every single biotic skill because they were spli tamong both Adept and Vanguard really because if your anAdept you can't biotically charge and if you'er a Vanguard you can't use singularities. Although in the new game it could be possible though given that they've removed the restrictions and made them into profiles rather than classes where you can even make your own profiles and selection of abilities so in MEA it probably is possible to make a pure biotic powerhouse if you wish.

I think it's fair to say that Liara in the first game was an extra pure biotic, she didn't even have weapons training (she had electronics instead, if memory serves). For ME2 Samara came quite close to pure biotic, with 3/4 of her abilities being biotic, and her class ability improving her biotics and weapon damage. In ME3 I guess Liara is as close as we come, but I see your point there.

Anyway, ever since ME2 biotics don't feel like awesome space magic but rather like something even your grandma has.

Wrex, Jacob, Jack, Samara, Javik? Vanguard is mix of biotics and combat, or do we require biotic charge now? Feels like it'd be a bit unfair to apply that requirement to Wrex.

I always thought Jack was a pure biotic, yeah she uses a pistol but her biotics are probably the most powerful skills of ME2 and only she and Samara can keep the shield long enough in the suicide mission.

Assuming that we're using the ME1 definition of classes by their mixture of tech, combat, and biotic abilities then by my count every game has had at least 1 of every class in our squad except Mass Effect 3 might not give you a Sentinel depending on if Kaiden is still alive or not.

Jack has a shotgun and an ammo power. Though I suppose one could view warp ammo as a biotic ability. It's tricky to nail down vanguard vs adept when you do away with the weapon and armor training. If we just go with the signature skills as define in ME2 and 3.

I can throw it at people, and maybe they'll be upset, but it'll probably break my toaster oven. Jacob in ME2 and Liara in ME3 were my most-frequently-murdered-by-their-own-poor-AI-choices squadmembers, which has soured me slightly on both of them. *muttermutter* Wrex in the Arena in ME3 is FAIRLY close to the classic vanguard... And part of the reason I'm INSANELY excited by the prospect of Cora as a perma-squaddie. THE MAYHEM. YES. PLEASE. OH MY GOD CHARGING EVERYWHERE ZIPPING AROUND LIKE INSANE SUPERHEROES PUNCHING EVERYTHING TO DEATH... AS A TEAM.

For me, I don't consider a squadmate as belonging to a mixed class unless they meet at least one of two criteria. One is that their skillset contains powers from two different categories. If they fail that criteria, then they must use two large weapons (assault rifles, sniper rifles, and shotguns). I feel that Tali's use of shotguns means that a single large weapon does not in itself qualify the user as a mixed class. So by the criteria I use, Wrex (the baseline), Jacob, and Thane qualify as Vanguards. However, Jack (due to the presence of Warp Ammo in Liara's powers) and Javik fail to meet either criteria and are thus Adepts.
