Let me pose this question. Since there is only so much time and money to develop a game and you had to make a trade-off what would you pick, more customization armor for squad members at the cost of only having Humans and Asari or having "Iconic" set armor so you can have a Krogan and Turian squad member. I know what I would pick. I would argue that's an invalid question. Why were they able to include shooty shooty, story, and customization for you and your various squadmates in ME1 but somehow can't in the sequels? Not to mention, but Wrex and Garrus' armors in ME1 could be swapped for any other armor and it morphed to fit them, just as the "iconic" armors that they peddle these days do. To actually answer your question though, I will choose customization or a "set" something any day. Freedom > Restriction.

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually didn't have a problem with companions having their own look like in DA2. At least I wasn't forced to make them wear anything derpy looking just because it has better stats. I always try to keep companions close to their original appearance in games like ME1 or DAO, but there are exceptions of course.

This thread reminds me how much pain I had to endure while retexturing squadmate armour in ME2 so I could have a squad in matching colours. Bioware's approach post ME1 seems to have been to replace most flawed but interesting mechanics with solid but flavourless ones. All you could in ME2 to change your squadmates appearance was swap do single colour swap. In ME1 you could equip every armour that NPC could wear wheras in ME2 Shepard was by default restricted to N7 parts that were appearantly tailor made for him. What was the flaw in the ME1 armor system, as it pertains to the squadmates? Just curious. I thought it was pretty good. It kept characters like Kaidan to light armor since he was a biotic. Ash could use medium or heavy as she was a soldier. So, it fit the classes and character's training. And you could customize. I suppose maybe it was flawed in that you couldn't craft? I think in the case the flaw wasn't so much as with the armour system but rather that the inventory system as a whole in ME1 was viewed as one of the worst in gaming. And BioWare's approach in ME2 was to entirely obliterate ideas from ME1 that were decent in theory but flawed in implementation so just like how they just outright removed planetary exploration and put in planet scanning instead, the inventory system got scrapped for what we've gotten ever since.

I don't have a big problem with that, so long as we can have everyone in actual combat armor when bullets start flying. Unique appearances are fine so long as they make sense; Drack going around in custom armor I can't modify is fine. Being forced to let Peebee prance around with her navel-baring outfit would be silly.

So it boils down to the basic fact that if a companion has an awful outfit* that gives me a hard time to take him or her seriously there is absolutely nothing I can do about it? Well, besides changing colors?
This does not strike me as an intelligent design choice, to put it lightly.
(* big chance of this happening since, well look at ME2 & 3)

As long as we get 2+ alternative outfits, I guess this is not too bad of a compromise. I mean I'd like to assume companions have their own preferences; it's just sometimes difficult to take e.g., Miranda seriously when she's walking around in vacuum unarmored and exposed. Because, you know, she'd die. Horribly. If not from the bullets then ok you get the idea.

I don't mind not being able to craft outfits for companions. I'd just like them to actually be wearing the outfit I put them in on the ship like Mass Effect 2 and not just when they're in combat like Mass Effect 3. It looks like they get out of their armor and wear 'casual' clothes while on the tempest. I liked how Vega and Kaidan for example did this in ME3, unfortunately not all of them did, some like Liara and Garrus had no casual clothes and switched to their default armour instead which was a bit dumb.

In Mass Effect 1 the only difference I remember is that the armors had a different paint job, but in Mass Effect 2 and 3 they started to make the armor have different physical characteristics which would require all the custom armor for Shepard to be reanimated and redesigned for each race instead of just giving it to a person to add a different color.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it would be more like the DAI setup, which I felt was a happy medium between ME1 & 2. Not sure it's actually been confirmed one way or the other.

I always try to keep companions close to their original appearance in games like ME1 or DAO, but there are exceptions of course. Inquisition did it best. The same armors had different looks for each squad member pertaining to their own unique style. And then you could further add on layers to make characters actually look well defended. Inquisitions setup would be the best middle ground in keeping characters with unique looks while also making them look as if they're dressed for heavy combat and/or hazardous environments.

I really liked how Inquisition handled companion's armor. I liked Liara a lot, but she wore clothes as a default outfit. But much to my surprise I could choose give her armor, when I selected her as a squadmate. If I end up taking Peebee along with me, I'd like the option to give her something more protective than her stylish purple jacket!

Bleh. That's such a cop out. To use an example from another thread, what if I don't want Cora to have "boob plates" on her armor? (I don't mind boob plates, just using as an example) What if I want her in something similar to what Ryder wears? What if I want the team to look like an actual team and match? But don't worry, I can change Garrus' armor from blue to blue and tan! Much cool! Such customization! Agreed. For example I wanted to change PeeBee's attire to something that matches the lore, meaning she wears a fully sealed suit and helmet, and yet with this choice she will always just wear the pointless breather mask and possibly not even a fully sealed suit. Oh my God, when Miranda was wearing the breather in ME2 I actually got really upset for awhile, lmao. I had played the entirety of ME1 and most of ME2 thinking it was supposed to follow the rules of the real world, and make you believe in the fantasy through well explained tech and lore. That's what Sci-Fi IS. But nope. They're not really humans. They're basically aliens that look like humans and have the ability to survive in space with a stupid face mask. Okay Bioware. Because the believable and integrity of the series takes a backseat to pandering space catsuits.
