I don't buy strategy guides. I play my first playthrough blind. After that I just look for a web walkthrough guide to do a complete 100% playthrough. The winning formula right hre

I'm kind of weird in that I actually enjoy just reading strategy guides I have a guide for Skyrim that I will occasionally flip through for entertainment. It's sort of the same with game manuals, which I really miss. As for buying guides for the OP's purpose, I would probably just save often, go at a nice, relaxed pace, and wait a few days to check online. That's usually all the time it takes for some people to start writing up guides and outlines.

Depends on how difficult I end up finding it. If I do though it'll only be for the puzzley things mostly like the Astrariums because I'm having difficulty getting past them but if there simple like the ME1 and ME2 ones then no I'll likely take care of them myself. I won't know that though until the game comes out.

You have a whole forum that will be more on point for strategy/min-maxing the game than the dev-created strategy guide will ever be, why spend more of your money?

Pretty sure I read somewhere that the physical book comes with a voucher code for some multiplayer XP boosts.
Anyway, it's a no from me.

Not a chance for the first run. It would take away from the immersion having to refer to it too often. I used the net during later play-throughs of the original trilogy, but only for achievements and such.

BioWare games are the only ones I buy strategy guides for (well, aside from Bethesda ones). Mostly, it's something I use as sort of a checklist, to be sure I haven't missed any miscellaneous quests. They're also just something I like to collect, I suppose, as I prefer to get the hardcover editions, which can be pricey. Totally agree with everything here with one exception: I will buy a hardcover stat guide for any kind of game I am into with some sort of secrets like FF games. So basically exactly this, I just buy them for a different variety of games.

No, much for fun to discover on your on. Use online guides from IGN and such, for the second playthrough, to make sure you didn't miss anything. Games are designed in such a way now that the designers want you to find all the content they made, so if you are a bit of an explorer, you should find all the content yourself. Also that's more fun

Yes, I'm going to buy it but with the amount of DLC and patches that most major games have now of days, also finding most info online and with sites like Youtube I can even find videos that show me what I need to know, it is becoming harder and harder for me to justify buying them.

Oh and my soft defense of Prima is that they have to do strat guides now for pretty much every AAA game on the market and games now are usually a lot bigger with more things in them than they used to be so that makes it hard to get to absolutely everything in them.

Are you guys going to be picking up the Prima Strategy Guide for Andromeda? I'm 50/50 on it. The last time I bought one was for Inquisition and I just found out that the strategy guide left out *three* minor quests that I never got until my fourth playthrough. (Kind of defeating the point of having a guide.) I'm kind of burned out. Thankfully there's the option to buy the book or just get it digital for approximately 10 bucks which isn't that bad. I normally rely on walkthroughs or wikis to help me make the best decision but since it's launch they won't be available. Just to put it in context, when I first played the Mass Effect trilogy (in one glorious run-through a few years ago), I managed to save everyone, get the best ending, etc, all because I had the ME Wiki to tell me that it's best to save the Rachni Queen or to tell Kelly to change her appearance. I *don't* want to make bad decisions in Andromeda so the Prima guide seems like a no-brainer but it just seems kind of....lacking in terms of coverage. What about you guys? I dunno, that to me seems to defeat the purpose of mass effect. The game is built on choices but we buy a guide telling us what to do so we might as well not have choices in the game. Part of the fun is trying to use your best judgement and seeing where it leads you. Some of the magic is taken away with a guide for something like mass effect. Its like being told Santa wasn't real when you're like 4 or something. The magic of Christmas is gone forever. Also a guide takes away the mystery of the story is mass effect.

I'm so glad to read everyone's perspectives about the Prima guide for Andromeda. Andromeda is the first game where I'm in on the run up to the release, have already purchased the pre-order and enjoying all the trailers and pre-game happenings.
My main concern with buying the Prima guide is that I'm still reading new Twitter comments from BW Devs who are still finding game play scenarios that they didn't know was in their own game! So how can a Prima guide be up to date and comprehensive?
I guess my real question is: What are these guides, what do they actually cover, and can it be out of date at its release because of last minute changes before the game is Gold approved? I have found mass effect.wikia.com invaluable and especially because it is updated and revised continuously. The printed guide is static so I fear that errors will cause confusion for me.

I pre-ordered the hard back version of the guide for MEA but it's not something I do for every game. I usually do it for games I'm a big fan of and for games where the size makes it easier to miss things.
My first play through will be blind, but after that I'll poke through the guide to see what I missed. The extra art is also a nice bonus and as someone else already said, I just like reading through the guide from time to time. :3

I do like having a guide for times when the course of action you take determines things later in the game, like siding with the mages or templars. Honestly, I have about 3-5 chars who have never even finished the game so knowing where I was in the story if I take a long break from the game is quite nice.

Most likely no, I tend to avoid guides when it comes to rpgs because I always find myself discovering new things I didn't find in last playthrough that excite me. Heck as much as I've played Mass Effect I just recently came across an interesting conversation that I completely missed after hundreds of hours of playing. Little things like that make me feel like it worth playing through again.

Guides are for Quarians with belly ache... Being serious i don't use guides, i prefer "going blind". Later when i finish i will look at the MassEffect wikia for anything i missed.

I don't buy strategy guides. I play my first playthrough blind. After that I just look for a web walkthrough guide to do a complete 100% playthrough. I'm the same way. I'd rather my first time through the game to be as "pure" as possible. It's on subsequent playthroughs that I go in with specific goals in mind -- romance X this time, let X die, etc... so I will often use guides for those to avoid missing anything. By that point, all of that info is available for free online.

I used to buy the guides at game stores when I was a little girl, but mostly for the artwork because I was an artist and would practice drawing the characters. I used to buy Game Fan books too and Nintendo Power. Man those were the days... Oh man I remember spending hours pouring over Nintendo Power when I was a kid. We didn't have much money when I was a kid so that was how I knew which games to beg for.

I don't think I've ever bought a strategy guide for any game. Ever. lol I prefer to find out what happens in the game on my own and let my choices be what they may (mistake or not). However, it's generally very hard to not get the best ending in bioware games, at least in my experience. Just pick the goody good options and you'll get the perfect ending (or near perfect). lol Same. That takes the fun and replay value out of it for me.

I remember the times when strategy guides were just a part of regular game edition. I fondly remember reading Age of Empires 2 one on my crapper to the point of having it memorized, just like spellbooks for Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale games.

Haven't bought a guide since middle school when Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask came out. It was needed. The internet became more accessible after that.

I would actually prefer if they made something like The World of Thedas for Mass Effect Universe. Never used the guides.

I have never in the past bought a strategy guide but I have with ME:A. I have pre-ordered the hard back special edition I can't put my finger on it but ME:A has me more hyped for a game than I have been in a long long time which has caused this pre-order lol
