This is about an event from DA:O I encountered only once. In my first play-through attempt. I started with a Dalish male rogue, who after Lothering went straight to Brecilian forest to recruit Dalish elves. I encountered the magic barrier, and tried to pass through it several times in an attempt to see all companion comments (Mahariel was with Alistair, Leliana and Morrigan). I was thinking that maybe one of them will say something useful about how to pass the barrier. After several attempts it was a cutscene INSIDE the barrier with some ancient elven spirits who explained Mahariel what to do. If I remember correctly, they said something about the Veil being thin in the Brecilian Forest, and that there are some spirits trapped inside living forms in the forest, and to get help from one. This happened in late November - early December 2009. I was playing a DVD version of DA:O, most likely version 1.00, since I don`t remember receiving any patch after installing it. Soon after this episode I cancelled that play (due to character development issues), started another Mahariel and finished the game. After a while I tried again to see that scene, but it never appeared again. Tried with Dalish first since I was thinking that maybe it was linked to Dalish only. Then I tried with characters from every origin. It`s possible that the first or second patch made that scene no longer available.
Does anyone encountered this scene? It baffled me then, and it was strange than I never encountered it again. I tried it two years ago after I bought a new Ultimate Edition linked to a different BW account, thinking that maybe it was a scene appearing only the first time you play the game - like the specialization manuals you need to buy only once, and the specializations are available for subsequent PT`s. So I expected that a new game without achievements will make that scene available at the first play-through. It didn`t happened.

This is why I opened the thread. I posted this question on the BW forum a long time ago, with no answers. I tried to pass through the barrier more than 3 times - around 6-7 I think. Then the next time the spirits appeared. They looked a bit like the spirits from the Elven Temple, but they were male (three if I remember correctly) and they were not insane. They talked with Mahariel about the barrier and how to disable it. It made sense back then - Mahariel was an elf, and the spirits tried to help him. Problem is, that scene never appeared again. I saw it only once 7 years ago. My guess is that a patch disabled the scene. I did not tried to trigger it with my second Mahariel, since I already learned how to pass the barrier. I tried for the scene again perhaps a year later. By that time the game was patched several times.

That's odd. You're suggesting that there were three characters fully voiced that nobody in the community has ever encountered? In order to verify that i had to search among the cut contents of DAO and there is nothing like that, are ou sure it wasn't a mod or simply they weren't just the Dalish of the forest turned ghostly because of a bug or an aura effect?

I bought the game soon after it was released, and it was my first attempt. It probably took me some two days to reach that point. I did not used any mods, and I don`t think there were any kind of mods available that early after launch. The game was unpatched. The encounter happened inside the fog barrier, with the elves looking very different than anybody from that Dalish clan. I don`t remember any Dalish tattoos on them either. They looked a bit "ghostly" like the spirits in the Elven Temple - I made the comparison later, since up to that point I didn`t encountered a spirit in DA:O yet. They behaved like some well experienced characters, and I vaguely remember they were dressed like Elven mages. My guess is that they were some Elven spirits. In that playthrough I passed fast through the first Brecilian area, encountered the werewolves and chased after them into the second area and run into the barrier. Since I did not explored the first area completely, I did not met the talking oak tree. I chased the werewolves trying to solve Athras`s quest about Danyla. So it wasn`t a typical game occurrence for me. Probably if I would have explored the first area completely and run into the talking oak this encounter would have never happened. And since I only triggered the scene once in all my experience with DA:O, I can only guess that something in this particular setup (Dalish main character, avoiding the talking oak) triggered the scene.

I have played the game since release and have never seen the scene you describe. Your theory about it being patched out of existence is quite likely. Before one of the patches, I found a reference to Wilhelm in Redcliffe's general store. After one of the patches (not sure which one), it vanished.
I no longer have the toolset running. Which is a pity, because that would be one way to find that scene. Perhaps someone else could hunt for it?

Back in 2009, when I stumbled upon this encounter I considered it a normal occurrence within the game. The next playthroughs I always went directly to the Elder tree, so the cutscene could`n be triggered. I realized that it was a rare occurrence only when I bought up the encounter online and with my friends, and nobody knew anything about this scene.
I was thinking about replaying my old DVD version DA:O in the original configuration - no patches, DLC`s, just as it was sold. I still have a functional old 12 inch Thinkpad notebook which came with Windows Vista. I will attempt to install the original configuration of the game on a Vista machine, then re-create the event of my first DA:O play.

Interesting. If it's there someone should be able to find it with the toolset. I wonder why no one else has seen it.
Did you manage to take down the barrier? If so what happened? What was the reward?

Interesting. If it's there someone should be able to find it with the toolset. I wonder why no one else has seen it. Did you manage to take down the barrier? If so what happened? What was the reward? It was just a short encounter with those ancient elven spirits. They told Mahariel that in order to progress further he needs to disable the barrier, and they suggested to seek help from forest creature who merged with spirits. They said something about the Veil being thin because of some ancient battle. Then they departed. I don`t remember extremely well the scene - I saw it only once. So I explored both forest areas, found the mad hermit and then the Elder tree, and as a Dalish Mahariel decided to help the talking oak. Back then I considered this scene as an alternative way to find out about a way to disable the barrier. I passed fast through the first Brecilian area without noticing the Elder tree, and I encountered the fog barrier before meeting the mad hermit. So probably Bioware considered this encounter as a good idea initially, then they realized that the talking oak and mad hermit dialogues offered enough clues, and this encounter is redundant. I have no idea why nobody else saw this scene. It was probably an unlikely combination of events what triggered it. Back then my Mahariel hurried forward to rescue Danyla. It was my first playthrough and I have no idea that most DA:O quests have no time limit.

So far, I’ve been unable to find anything pertaining to this specific content but I’m not able to search the toolset itself so I’m afraid that is for someone else to do that otherwise replicating the circumstances may be the only other way.

I`ve found an ancient but functional hard drive for my X200 machine and successfully installed Vista Business SP2, then the old DVD version of DA:O. It works ... somehow. I have spent a lot of time trying to remember how to tweak a bit Windows Vista - I haven`t used this OS since Win 7 was launched. The problem is that this 12 inch Thinkpad is the only Vista machine I still have, and it has only an Intel GM45 video adapter. Good news: the unpatched DA:O is running on Vista SP2. Bad news: It`s a chore to play even on 800x600 res. I hope to be able to reach Brecilian forest before I give up... Joking a bit...

I finally reached the fog barrier, and the scene was not triggered . I tried to do everything as close to my first play as possible - chasing after Swiftrunner and his team, entering the Eastern Area by using the entrance near the felled ironbark tree, encountering Danyla and then the magical barrier. The problem is: while I did not use my Bioware account to log in (so no DLC was downloaded, not even Shale and the dragon armor), the game connected to Bioware servers and had Levi Dryden present at camp. And I don`t remember him being present before Warden`s Keep being launched. Maybe I should have disconnected the notebook after the game was activated. It`s too late now, and I don`t think I`ll repeat this search too soon. It was quite horrible to play DA:O on an 2009 small notebook machine with only an Intel 4500 MHD video adapter. I succeeded to make the game somehow playable in native resolution, but with framerates often around 10-12... So: I tried, but I`m not sure that the game was not altered after installing it. Although the daorigins.exe version was 1.09363.0 compared to my current DA:O UE version 1.5.13263.0

Couldn't you use the disk to install and play it on a modern computer with the internet blocked out using a firewall or something? It wouldn't have to be played on a old computer. I have tried. But my old DVD version of DA:O doesn`t even start on a Windows 10 machine. It can be installed all right, but it needs to be patched in order to run on Windows 7 or 10. And I use Windows 10 on my every computer, and my currently used ones are machines with Windows 7 and 8.1 licenses, upgraded to Win 10. Even the old but still working X200 has Win 10 installed normally. What I tried to do is to play the unpatched game, as I did in late 2009. It never started on anything newer than Vindows Vista. I will try once again later. I`ve activated the X200 notebook`s old Vista license, so I can swap again it`s internal SSD with the old hard drive. As far as I remember, DA:O needed an activation over Internet in order to play. But I`ll try to re-install it without Internet connection, and see what happens. But not right now. It was quite gruesome to play DA:O on such a machine ...

You could try running a Windows XP virtual machine. If you have the right BIOS settings enabled, and the right things installed, you can give the virtual machine full access to your CPU and GPU. Also with a firewall you can have your network open for it to activate then the moment it is activated block all internet traffic.

That sounds really cool and helpful to new players, I don't understand why they would patch it out intentionally. But I have also not seen the scene. *no help*
