Hello,
I am planning to do a trilogy run in preparation for Andromeda (playing as male Shepard). Out of the six available classes, I have narrowed it down to Adept and Engineer but I don't know which one I should choose. I plan to have a lore friendly playthrough, so Adept can only have Biotic bonus powers and the Engineer can only have Tech bonus powers should I choose to have bonus powers (no Adepts with Energy Drain or Engineer with Barrier or Engineer with Warp Ammo).
From my experience, Adept is powerful throughout the trilogy if you add Stasis as your bonus power for Mass Effect 2 (to deal with Geth Primes, Tela Vasir and the like) and Reave for Mass Effect 3 (to deal with Stasis-immune fast moving projectile dodgy targets like Kai Leng, Clone and Armax Arena while offering some damage protection).
On the other hand, the Engineer requires no bonus powers whatsoever but starts off weak, especially in Mass Effect 1 before improving (but still unable to deal with Barriers in Mass Effect 2) and becoming powerful in Mass Effect 3. The Engineer also has an exclusive cutscene.
So as you can see, I am torn. I thought about going Sentinel but I disliked it since I like to play as a ranged caster, which is difficult to do in Mass Effect 2 on Insanity difficulty (Because the Tech Armor goes down almost instantly when you enter a firefight and without the Tech Armor, the Sentinel does not feel like a Sentinel). That and I want to play as a specialist instead of a generalist.
So between the Adept and the Engineer, which class should I go for ?
Cheers.

Yeah Engineer does have the disadvantage of no real defense power in ME1 to go along with light armor. But I find the class a little more interesting to play than Adept in that one. I like Adept more than Engineer in ME2 by a little bit. But Engineer is sort of the Swiss Army knife character there where you have a power for nearly everything. Although you don't have an outright barrier power, Incinerate or even fast cooldown Cryo Blast isn't bad for adding a little barrier damage in with your SMG. And of course the squaddies. Although Stasis is in fact the best bonus for Adept (and potentially every class really) in ME2, Heavy Singularity also provides decent CC on a lot of elites. For ME3 I like Engineer more than Adept, but in a way you are just choosing which combos you want to pull off. I would probably go Engineer if I were you, but really either can be fun. Mostly that is because of the difference in ME1 though.

Engineer is just brutally bad (in my opinion) in Mass Effect 1. But it gets good and fun in Mass Effect 2 and 3.
Adept is good and fun in Mass Effect 1 and 2, but is rather lame (in my opinion) in Mass Effect 3.
Engineer is really versatile in ME2 and ME3 and can be played in a variety of ways. I find the Adept lacks any sort of good build variety in ME2 and ME3.
I would lean towards Engineer, but cheat a bit and use the Infiltrator in ME1 and take AI Hacking or Medicine as a bonus power to make it play more like an Engineer.

Play both
Engineer wasn't bad. In ME3, the class is the most fun. You get two extra squadmates, combat drone and sentry turret.
Adept is good. Depending on how you play, you could go through the trilogy without using your weapon unless the game forces the issue. I did it for ME2/3.
Hmmm. I might do that. a trilogy run as an adept using no weapons.

Play the engineer. In ME1, you can always take on an assault rifle as a bonus talent to give him/her some ability to shoot things at a somewhat longer range and to switch out weapons if sabotaged. You just have to be a little more wary about allowing him/her to take damage (since you're in light armor). Then just select biotic heavy squad mates to fill in the gaps.

After much thought, I decided to go with Adept. Here are the reasons why:-
1) I decided to flesh out my canon male Shepard. He is someone who is excellent in what I like to call the "pure disciplines" instead of the "applied disciplines". That means he is someone who is good at the pure sciences but not good at applied sciences. Engineering is all about applied sciences.
2) I want my Shepard to start as a reluctant combatant, meaning he is only in the Alliance Military because he had to be there due to circumstances beyond his control. Given the lore, Human Adepts are far more likely to be recruited into the Alliance Military over Human Engineers because of the way Human Biotics are treated.
3) I have also planned for my Shepard to romance Tali. Adept Shepard and Tali is in my opinion, a far more interesting pairing than an Engineer Shepard and Tali. Two very different people
For Mass Effect 1, I will go with Assault Rifles as my bonus power, thereby negating the need to invest skill points in Shield Boost. For Mass Effect 2, I will go with Stasis as my bonus power with the occasional usage of Energy Drain. Stasis solves the Adept's difficulty of dealing with targets like YMIR Mechs and the like. For Mass Effect 3, I will go with Reave as my bonus power with the occasional usage of Energy Drain. Area Reave with a focus on damage protection solves many of the Adept's weaknesses in Mass Effect 3, namely the lack of protective power and the lack of a hitscan power. As for Energy Drain, it is quite believable to imagine a scenario where Tali teaches Shepard how to use it and helps Shepard get an Omni-Tool upgrade to use in its basic form - Lore wise, the standard Adept Omni-Tool is not sufficient to use for dedicated Tech Powers.
As for weapons and armor, in Mass Effect 1, I will go for either the Predator Light Armor or Colossus Light Armor with Spectre Assault Rifle. For Mass Effect 2, I will go for for the Blood Dragon Armor, Locust SMG, Phalanx Pistol and Mattock Rifle. For Mass Effect 3, I will stick with Blood Dragon Armor (I hate Cerberus colors on my Shepard's armor) and M-7 Lancer (Phaeston before that, purely because I like the aesthetics of the gun).
Lastly, for the Engineer, I will do a FemShep playthrough as one - Stuck on deciding between Garrus, Kaidan and Liara as love interest at the moment.

I've been considering both these classes for my next run also. I love both, but Engineer gets the slight edge for me. As much as I enjoy Adept play, I actually get somewhat tired of biotic explosions well before I'm done with ME 3. 2) I want my Shepard to start as a reluctant combatant, meaning he is only in the Alliance Military because he had to be there due to circumstances beyond his control. Given the lore, Human Adepts are far more likely to be recruited into the Alliance Military over Human Engineers because of the way Human Biotics are treated. Out of curiosity, what backgrounds are you choosing when you create Shep? Reave is a fantastic choice for Adepts. My last Adept game I focused on Reave, Throw and Cluster Grenades and emphasized power damage in my skill tree and armor choices. I like the N7 armor with full Serrice Council pieces, looks great and gives 40% power damage, 50% if you add the Umbra Visor. I don't care for Blood Dragon aesthetics much. Have fun with both your Shepards.
