Nintendo does have a lot of good games geared towards younger players, doesn't it? My kids are too old for me to influence whether or not they can have video games, but when they were kids, probably when they were around 7-8 years old, is when they started playing them. Video games back then were things like Zelda, Fester's Quest, Star Tropics, Mario 3, etc. Now my granddaughter, she'll be 12 next month, plays games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Minecraft, and Pokemon. My daughter just picked up Rime, Fe and Yooka and Laylee for the Nintendo too. Puzzle games are really good for kids, they teach them thinking and problem-solving skills. Games like GTA and COD...those are things she can get into when she has a way to pay for them...if she's interested in them later on. I wouldn't want young kids to be on multi-player sites, anyway. My little Niece is 4 and she loves Smash Bros. Ultimate. She played that with me for nearly 3 hours the other day which is shocking as she usually gets bored after about 10 minutes on things like Mario Kart and Minecraft. I tried her with Starlink on Friday as she likes Starfox but it was a bit too complicated for her at the moment. The only other games sheāll play for more than half an hour are Rayman Legends and Pokemon Letās go but I wouldnāt exactly call it playing, she just likes to wander back and forth She's just young...4? When does she turn 5? Soon? I could've sworn she was 4 over a year ago.

Sheāll take an interest in games for instance but say with Minecraft she can basically move back and forth and jump but thatās really about it. Iāve never had kids myself so I donāt when it is that they become competent for lack of a better word. Iām just excited to introduce her to other stuff like Stardew Valley and Crash Bandicoot.

Let her watch you play every now and then, she'll slowly gain more interest. They're cute when they're that age though.

How old would you allow your kid(s) to play vidya and what would you allow them to play? It depends. Like my 3 years old niece already "plays" videogames with me; I let her watch some games I play, like Dragon Quest XI or Zelda Ocarina of Time (she loves the music of both games ). Of course, I wouldn't let her watch horror/violent videogames.

Forget games, I think that anything with a screen should be prohibited until age 3, and significantly limited between ages 3 and 5.
My aunt lives less than an hour away and her house is a nightmare: four boys, each one no more than two years away from the next. Those kids are glued to screens (2 TVs, 1 PC, quite a few different handhelds) and all have the attention-span of a gnat. I also had a little too much of that myself growing up and struggled with sustaining attention. Honestly I also feel like cartoons becomes a mindset. Monkey see, monkey do. You start to think in terms of TV frivolity, when independent thinking should be encouraged.
Once I feel like their brains/minds have developed properly, I'll be happy to let them have fun. 'Til then, I'm very much wary of all that.

I totally agree with you; "screen exposure" at younger age should be quite limited. Some kids shows or even videogames can "sharpen their minds". However, prolonged exposure to electronic devices, or media, may result in a delayed development.

Even no video game until age 14 rule wouldn't save me... so I say no video game until age 18 can be a much better law. We need a XCOM tier Advent tier police to enforce this law tho. The state will finally save the next generation. I say the sooner we start the better.

'Til then, I'm very much wary of all that. I agree, to a point. We're moving into the age of automation and soon everyone will have to know how to navigate the internet and be familiar with computers and tablets, so having early exposure to them can be beneficial. My granddaughter knows a lot about computers, it helps that her mother has taken a bit of animation, java script and coding classes and has taught her some things. My granddaughter can even produce artwork with a drawing pad and she's quite talented at it. It depends what kind of screen time you're allowing them, because things like paint programs and such isn't much different than giving them colouring books and crayons. My granddaughter has some pretty good artskills, both on the computer and with pencil and paper.

How old would you allow your kid(s) to play vidya and what would you allow them to play? One of the very first games I remember playing is... Mortal Kombat. I was 6 or 7 at the time. A boy I hung out with during the summer holidays had it, so we played together. I grew up alright, I think.. BUT... it's a different environment these days, with games being online and all the community stuff being a part of that. I don't know. Another reason for me not to have kids, I guess.

How old would you allow your kid(s) to play vidya and what would you allow them to play? Hm, I think i'd let them play a couple hours of games a week. But as for what exactly I'd let them play...that I'm not sure about. I don't think I'd let them play online games though. I'd probably go with local only multiplayer games, or simplistic games to start with (games like Minecraft, or Stardew Valley). I would vary those, depending on their development. When they started showing some basic maturity and responsibility, I'd be willing to revisit the issue. Eventually, I'd be willing to give them complete freedom in game choices.

Question: - what completely hopelessly outdated equipment/tech do you still use because you simply like too much to replace it with newer better stuff? And why do you like it?

Fountain pens...I love how they feel as the write and how they make my writing look; currently using a Parker 51 fountain pen from the 1950s.

I listen to FM radio in the car for music and if nothing good is on, go to my CDs. 'Just don't want to use data from my phone.

Would you respect your partner less if they were less ambitious than you are? You're a career focused, wanting to make it to the top. Your partner only wants a job that will pay the bills and has no interest in moving in their career if they have decent and modest lifestyle? Would you look down on them for this? Nope. I did try being "married to my job" when I was in Biomed research but in the end that wasn't a good life. Now I have my job. It's a good job. When I punch out I'm on my free time. My wife has a job, it pays less but she is very free to with her schedule and can decide to take a day off whenever really. Better live now with goodenough economy than work yourself to the bone and not really be able to enjoy the early retirement. How old would you allow your kid(s) to play vidya and what would you allow them to play? Well, my kids became gamers early on. I think my son was 10 when he got his first GTA. They have turned out alright so far. Question: - what completely hopelessly outdated equipment/tech do you still use because you simply like too much to replace it with newer better stuff? And why do you like it? I can't think of anything. Unless books count? For instance I haven't used a watch in years.

How could I forget... A pocket watch. Received my first pocket watch as a gift back in jr. high school, today I use a watch I've owned for several decades...it's a former railroad pocket watch 21 jewels. Why? I love the feel of the watch, the look of it, the sound of it and when I'm having a bad day I'll unscrew the back and watch the movement. Note: The image isn't from my watch.

Question: - what completely hopelessly outdated equipment/tech do you still use because you simply like too much to replace it with newer better stuff? And why do you like it? I'm counting this as equipment... Bow ties (real not clip-on). I haven't really worn them since my last movie theater, but I prefer them over normal ties. My preferred shape/style is diamond point...the more outrageous the pattern the better. Why?- I like the look. - On a practical level a bow tie is unlikely to get caught in the gears of a projector. - An untied bow tie still in your collar is a beautiful indicator that you're ready to relax/party. - I find the act of untying a bow tie extremely sexy.
