I tend to pick either Reave or Flare to complete a Vanguard's long distance damage with biotics. Close quarters is no problem, but having something for enemies out of reach that can't be charged is nice. There's something weirdly satisfying about being able to set up and detonate biotic explosions that was restricted in ME2.
Most shielded enemies in ME3 can be beaten to death anyway with biotics so I never felt compelled to compensate for the Vanguard's weakness with tech. Heck, Vanguard felt more invincible than Sentinel classes.

Carnage as a offensive ranged power like Warp or Flare for mine to deal damage from distance.

I used Reave, then AP ammo, then Stasis. It is surprisingly good!

Energy drain is my choice too. I simply love it and it covers my lack of tech powers.
Later in the game I change it to dominate (from Leviathan DLC) and watch how Brutes rip each other apart with my godly-like puppet master talents.

Flare has amazing synergy with Pull, letting you turn Cerberus Troopers into floating bombs, and it fits a Vanguards' "OVERWHELMING POWER" style.
Energy Drain is arguably the "smartest" choice, in that it completely fills the one weakness of the class.
Warp Ammo could be seen as redundant, but can have amazing squad synergy if you pick biotic squadmates, especially if you squad out Incendiary Ammo.
Fortification is an interesting choice, in that it has the most synergy with Vanguard out of the other defensive bonus powers, with the highest potential DR to boot, with at least 70% more melee damage for 30 seconds when purged.
For those interesting in picking a bonus power that's "logically consistent", Flare or Warp Ammo is the best fit that matches the class description and "matches" the ability types that the Vanguard already has access to.
