There isn't a special spot, you just have to shoot the head off, which I imagine is actually chance based (like head gib in ME3).

In Mass Effect 3 when you shoot a target in the head sometimes their head explodes. It is called head gib in the scripts. Different weapons had different chance to do that with a headshot kill, ranging from 0 to 100%. I assume ME2 did something similar with the YMIR, but I don't have a way to view all the scripts for it like I do for ME3.

It's not random, you just have to hit them in the head with the killing shot. No nuke as long as there's any health left.

Tried a controlled test at Eclipse Smuggling Depot where I deleted the squad, locked shields, and went with Tempest and it seemed to consistently knock the head off. OP, was there a specific weapon that wasn't working, or was this just a general question? Noticed a claim that the YMIR on Freedom's Progress never goes nuclear, and can't really remember. Might need to try to test that one.

I think I figure out how to make it explode everytime. You need to shoot on the head several times in a row.

I'm pretty sure I've had that YMIR nuke as any other every now and then. Not that it really matters in that particular case anyway - other than for the lulz, considering there are no more enemies there for the explosion to kill.

I just tried to test it a bit by loading up an old Soldier save. I could consistently knock the head off with the Predator, Avenger and Mantis but it didn't go nuclear any of the times.

Yeah, I just happened to start a new ME2 playthrough, and I had the same experience. I guess memory was fuzzy there.

So is it then simply chance based? The reason I ask is because Friday night I did the Warlord Dossier to get grunt with my Femshep Infiltrator, and during the fight with Jedore I shot the YMIR in the head with the Incisor while cloaked and when it hat not much health left. It went nuke after that ... and took out a Krogan. If it is indeed chance based then it would explain why this was the first and only time that I got a YMIR to go Nuke. Never got one to go Nuke with my Sentinel so far? ( And I am not far from the end game with him. )

I was thinking it was that the Freedom's Progress YMIR probably doesn't do it, since that is sort of the "advanced tutorial" mission.
All the YMIR's on Eclipse Smuggling Depot would go nuclear with the Tempest when I tested it with an Adept the other day... and that one was a very controlled test (squad deleted, shields locked).
During normal gameplay there is probably too much that can happen to rob the kill. The auto weapons in ME3 are pretty inaccurate at moderate range, at least out of cover, so easy for a stray bullet to land on a shoulder or something. Or a squadmate might get the killing blow. Shotguns don't render all the pellets on your screen, so hard to tell if one may have hit off the head. Stasis will sometimes bug and cause them to spontaneously explode as it times out, or cause them to drop through the ground. Also possible some oddities happen when they are ragdolled via biotics. Not sure if AI Hacking has an effect on this or not.
If we wanted to figure it out for sure we would probably need to go through all the YMIRs in the game and check them in controlled circumstances. But I think I am going to assume that killing headshot is supposed to make them go nuclear, with the exception of the one on Freedom's Progress.

Hopefully I will get another one because it was actually fun to see that happen.
