Is the Witcher worth playing? Well, the answer to that question is subjective to every player. Personally, I like the concept behind the game and the story of the Witcher in the process. A mutant monster slayer who travels around the fantasy kingdom hunting supernatural creatures for coin while also exploring the seedy underbelly of society and politics. Pretty much a fantasy Private Detective. (there's a great Extra Credit video about it). This is also a game where the star is the world. From what I hear, this is one of the most realized open-worlds in gaming history, with spectacular landscapes and NPC's that feel alive with their own personal backstories (the sidequests, after all, are the best parts of the game, from what I hear.) Here's my problem with the game though. Even on it's easiest difficulty, it's not a very easy game to get into. Many of the gameplay parts, like the controls, combat, and RPG menus take a while to get used to. Even if you can get used to the controls and figure out the mechanics of the game, my other gripe is that this is a game heavily based on recourses and inventory management. I'm the kind of player who usually equips whatever new weapon I find that's stronger than my currently equipped. I never really bother with crafting or upgrade systems unless I'm lucky enough to have the ingredients necessary. In Witcher, your whole success in the game is practically dependent on you brewing almost every potion and upgrading armor frequently. Pretty much all of my gameplay is a continuing pattern of play for a bit, check the inventory and crafting menus, return to game, forget what you're looking for, double check again. I feel Witcher 3 is more of a management game than an RPG adventure, and I'm not a huge fan of management games. So maybe Witcher 3 is not my kind of game to play. I have to admit I've given up on W3 as well as W1 and W2 simply because the combat mechanics suck. Never got into them nor the hang of them as much as I liked the idea behind the games the combat was the killer.
For both W1 and 2, I installed mods to increase my health and stamina and open up more abilities in order to avoid what I'd heard was troublesome combat. On easy mode, I didn't have any issues (other than the stupid QTEs in W2 ). I dove into 3 with no mods and it was fine on easy mode.
There is potion crafting in all 3 games - and the potions really are pretty necessary - but I didn't find it onerous or difficult to do. Since I tend to pick every weed I come across anyway, I didn't feel like I was forced into doing something out of the ordinary. YMMV. There aren't many weapons/armors to craft in the first two games - for the most part, what you loot is good enough. In fact, by the time I was able to craft/upgrade my weapons in the first game, I got a better one via the main quest anyway, so it was wasted effort (and gold!). There is lots of crafting available in W3 for the Witcher gear sets but again, you can use what you loot and you should be fine. Some of the higher level loot/quest rewards are actually better stat-wise than the set gear, but there's just something about wearing actual Witcher gear that feels right.
I'm often first in line to dump a game for crappy or frustrating mechanics, so I can sympathize. For me, though, these games weren't bad at all.

I might try Witcher 3 again. Playing on the easiest difficulty, is it possible to beat the game as the good ol' fashioned "pick up gear as I go" kind of player instead of an avid shopper and upgrader?
Or how about this question, would it be possible to beat the game with just the default (starter) gear?

I'm baffled by all the negativity concerning combat. It's a very simple easy style of spamming quen and dodging. Dodge dodge dodge is the key to success. Same goes for fist fights. Even on default difficulty the game is much easier than W2 at the beginning (died 10 times in the W2 intro, wtf). I hardly ever bothered with potions because except for a few contracts, you don't need them on the lower difficulties. Always wanted to replay on higher difficulty so that I am actually forced to prepare for battle like in the books. Combat is all about reflexes and timing, not strategy. Maybe that's why I liked it so much. I sometimes tanked skull marked monsters several levels higher than Geralt just to see if I could pull it off. If it's a group, it's tough but doable when you lure one away from the group and dispatch them one after another carefully. (That was basically the "strategy" for W2 too. Divide and conquer.) There is no point in fighting high level monsters though because they don't drop better loot and XP are still low.
Upgrading gear is essential however, I'd say. Inventory management insanity is indeed an issue. Maintaining gear so it doesn't break is also stupid/annoying and never a good idea (looking at you FO3 and NV). Crafting witcher gear is ridiculously time consuming and very expensive. But you can probably get by without just fine. I did not use witcher gear for half of the game. That's the only thing I would criticize about gameplay. Didn't bother me all that much though.

Or simply There isn't much mistery in mastery witcher's 3 combat. The main focus should be qen, aard, a little bit of axii and dodge, dodge, dodge. If you're seeing an enemy far away, cast qen before approaching. Stamina regenerates a lot faster outside of combat. If you're dealing with a big crowd, use aard sweep to knock everyone in the ground. If you're dealing with a heavy hitter, or an enemy with a shield, use axii to stun them and get a couple of free hits. Follow these rules and you will survive for the majority of the game. Early game should be the hardest, since certain skills won't be avaliable.

Quen is not as ridiculously OP as it was in W2 but still viable in 90% of all situations. The sign I used most aside from quen was igni because I like burning stuff. It's good for crowd control.
Man, now I feel like replaying on Death March... probably would get my ass handed to me, lol. I forget the controls of any game super fast... So W3 and HZD were the only games since ME3 that I felt like replaying for the sheer joy of the simply fast paced combat.

Or how about this question, would it be possible to beat the game with just the default (starter) gear? Well, I'm up to the find Dandelion portion and I'm not sure what level I am... around 14 or 15 and I just switched my starter chest piece out for a full set of griffin school gear so, at least for a good portion of the game you can use the starter armor. (I'm playing on normal) I did switch out my gloves, pants, and boots though for better armor stats, but kept the chest piece cause most chest armor looks like hot garbage in this game. It does let you upgrade the starter chest piece once and I recommend that since it ups it's armor value to 30.

I don't really see the issue tbh. I'd hardly describe TW3's combat as "difficult". Personally I used a mod that allowed me to cast signs with the number keys rather than whatever the default casting key is. Meaning, instead of switching a sign with one key and then casting with another, merely pushing say - 3 - allowed me to cast Quen. This basically changed combat for me from only spamming one Sign the majority of the time - to actually using all of them for their intended purposes. It made the combat a lot more fun. If I have one criticism of TW3, then it is that this function wasn't part of the base game. This wasn't even a proper "mod", it was just a bit of editing of one of the .ini documents. Yep. and I find it truly bizarre they never patched this in. Honestly, I can't play TW3 without mods because for me there are so many that make substantial improvements.

So is the radial menu a controller only thing?
Selecting signs works the same way as selecting powers in Mass Effect on console. Have no issues whatsoever with this.

Selecting signs works the same way as selecting powers in Mass Effect on console. Have no issues whatsoever with this. A radial menu is fine, but tends to break the flow of combat. I found it much easier to just press 2 to lay down a Yrden trap, 3 for Quen, etc. One key-press for effect is a lot simpler then two or more. It does, yes. Guess growing up on consoles and still using a controller on PC has made me quite tolerant of less than ideal button mapping.

I'll definitely be getting Thronebreaker for the Gwent-like battles! And more of that delicious music! The dialogue feels more like a stage play. Will take some getting used to but should be interesting. Meve is not my favorite character but I trust the writers. At that price I hope the story isn't too short. I'm quite surprised at how much they've evolved the singleplayer campaign into its own game. I didn't know! This is great! I hope it's even more fun than the original Gwent.

I'm pretty damn impressed with the animation in the conversation scenes. It's obviously the same technique used for the opening of Witcher 3 (before the main menu), but I can't tell what it is. 2D animation? 3D animation? A combination of both?

CDPR is really doing some special animation work in this game, both in the cards and the story boards. There's this cool dither between 2d and 3d. Despite never getting into Gwent, I might actually get this since they're clearly blending genres and card playing is only part of the game. Voice acting is top notch too. Here's commentary with the lead writer.

Nope, still overrated.
Mind you, not overrated because it's not good, but overrated because the fans put it up on a pedestal like it's the Jesus of videogames, which it is not.
It's a pretty neat RPG when you think about it, but... eh? I dunno, I failed to enjoy the characters for the most part. The only reason I remember anything is because I have a very good memory to start with.
