I reinstalled JE from that free DL on Origins because why not?
The game actually looks rather pretty to me. I am shocked... the avatars are a little dated (Dawn Star's noodle arms) but to be honest they did not get much better since then. Actually, they are prettier than DAI.
The setting is as it always was... amazing. Going back to the silent protagonist was strange, but suddenly I had to scroll to see all the options again... take that, the dialogue wheel! But I wish my guy had a great voice!
I did make a guy, because, well, it is a game from early 2000's, so a guy gets the best. I went with Furious Ming, whom I renamed into Bright Zheng, and tried to remember how do we actually fight in JE...
The good thing is that it gets the inputs from my Razer no problems, the bad thing is that it does not understand the wheel scroll in the keybinds. The block and dodges were very easy to pick up, because, duh, easy, but the attacks themselves, I could not for the life of mine remember how you played it on lmb/rmb.
I hope it comes back to me, because to be honest, the combat system actually looks... better to me than the Dragon Age games, and the first ME, that are contemporary or near contemporary.
So far, my not quite brilliant Senior Pupil did manage to fend off the inevitable bandits attacking the inevitable peaceful village, got himself a spiffy staff... then exchanged it for a spiffy sword... and learned about unrest among the ghosts. He'd met a mysterious Assassin (shortly before the Sin's demise at the hands of explosive Master Lee). Oh, and of course, he was told in cryptic terms that he is destined for greatness. So is Dawn Star, the lovely cherry blossom, though of course she was self-effacing about it.
I might be in love with a very old game... flame...

I have finally had a chance to read the net and figure out how the pc controls work. I could not see the AoE attack on my Heavenly Wave with lmb/rmb, maybe because I invested no points in it, and I cannot see how I can rebind each of the attacks to a different slot (I prefer 1-2 rather than 2-1 for Wave, then Cut when I can finally do my combos) but otherwise, it's actually incredibly cool and intuitive system.
I am going for a focus based character, wielding swords a lot, rather then using chi for magic power ups and shapeshifting I did back when I first played it. Just something out of the comfort zone for added zest.
Bright Zheng beat up Gao the Lesser, as I was sighing over all those wonderful memories of Mal Reynolds, and Master Li did his big reveal. Ah, Zheng, you are the last one of your proud people. The costuming, the music and the pace of the cutscene was grand. The Death Hand still has the same ominous presence as he did when I first saw the game. The only thing that is a touch irritating is Dawn Star scratching her head. She has really awkward shoulders, so it looks very unnatural. I am probably going to play with another companion if her animations are off like that.
Then Zheng ventured into a Spirit Cave conveniently located in Master Li's leaving room. Then he received an amulet... oh, gods, I forgot the amulet altogether! Soulstones... of course, the soulstones... I still need to explore the rest of the cave, but so far I am managing to survive, and enjoying how the character attacks and moves.
And, finally, a duh moment. I have just remembered I wanted to call him Crimson Zhou. My OCD in naming characters pushes me to restart, but I am used to him being Zheng too...

I love this game.
I always played as Radiant Jen and Scholar Ling. Their looks and outfits are absolutely stunning. Not a big fan of the other PCs.

My BnS character looked very similar to him, and that's in a game that is a decade younger and unabashedly dedicated to the characters that look cool. To be honest, I like the look of all 6 protagonists in JE, they all look exotic and wonderful. I did play Scholar Ling the first time. To illustrate my point, BnS character for comparison, basically the same as Ming:

Well, i have been through the whole Dragon Age franchise, Mass Effect Andromeda and Tyranny since February, but I am returning to this Jade Empire PT. So... loaded the game and found myself in the Spirit Cave were Master Li sent me to mediate and do the sort of things the Last Monk gotta do. Figure 1. Ah, hello again, Bright Zheng, missed ya! I load the game, break the seal on the door, a kindly looking old man in ghostly form shows up, and... the kindly looking old man kicks my butt! Not before revealing all the problems the spirits face, but ouchie! I did a crush course in my abilities in JE, gave it a few tries, kicked the old man to the curb, and did what all good monks do... sat down to meditate. Whic action swapped the old goat for a pretty damsel in a very obvious distress. Why, she was almost vaporized! She reinforced the need for me to save the world along with implying she is in trouble too... Then, being a lady and seeing she is talking to a teenage boy, she offered Zheng to pick a blue shirt or a red shirt (ice or fire combat style). Seeing how the old man just re-soundly kicked my behind with ice, ice it was. Figure 2. Zheng and the Mysterious Damsel needing saving. Well, as I magically returned back to Master Li. He was not pleased that Zheng went talking to damsels when all he had to do is to put stones in a darn amulet. Teenage males, eh? Also, turns out another damsel needs saving. Seriously, Dawn Star, seriously? You chose this particular morning to run into the swamp? What if I have not returned from the caves early? Interestingly enough, the cutscenes in the Monastery look far crisper than the ones in the Spirit Cave. Figure 3. Onward, to look for Dawn Star. Crisply.

Omg, I think I am starting to remember. I ran into Hin who is begging me to free Fen, the Gentle Flower of the Fields... and I just am so sure the lady is build like a tank and have a foul mouth... right, right? Omg, can't wait to see if I am getting a total recall here. ...apparently not! I forgot that Sagacious Zu came to join the team that early! Well, well, welcome Zu! You are still the coolest character in the game. I think the cinematic sequences were not redone in high res, so they do look blurry on new machine, but the cutscens that simply show characters talking are crisp, that's why. Figure 1. Zu in cinematics vs... Figure 2. Zu in a cutscene:

And, yes, yes, the Flower of the Fields is saved! Go us! I guess, I did not quite remember it but Figure 1. The Flower of the Fields Other than that, Zheng and Zu killed a Toad demon and Gao the Lesser as well, freed Dawn Star... gotta love Gao - I've saved you, and you still hate me? Typical. ...and the peaceful little village finally bought it due to the assault of the coolest flyers ever combined with Lotus Assassins and the Death Hand himself, and Zu said the Glorious Strategist Li should have been dead many years. The plot picked up so fast, darn, I miss that so much in the modern games. And, of course, Zheng's own flyer crush lands as they arrive to the Tien's Landing:

gotta love Gao - I've saved you, and you still hate me? Typical. Gao Reynolds is not a great man. He's only a good man. Well...he's okay... When they first said that NF is gonna voice I assumed he was a companion voice. I would have loved that. I was sort disappointed that his role was so minor and that his character died so early on. I am done for the day, so here are the last impressions: Ah, the very first campsite, and this chit-chat with Zu makes me wonder just how much they edited those cutscenes. Lol, if I did not know there is no Zu's romance, I would have been misled... I ran around Tien's Landing a little trying very hard to be a Closed Fist person, but really, whoever can possibly deny Old Mother Kwan her Teahouse? Then I went into the ruins and enjoyed that blend of macabre and hilarious that makes JE so special. The rat demon, the scary little orphan ghosts... now, that's my chance to get more close-fisted! I've killed the demon and I am gonna take Kindly Y's head and bring it to the baby-girl no matter what excuses he has. Figure 1. Ruins Decor. Is it you, Divine Justinia? Well, it ain't a BioWARE game if you don't do a lot of fighting in caves. This cave however comes with one of those mini-stories. The prison guard that tries to free up prisoners as the flood waters rise, but gets strangled for his efforts by a murderer he releases first... they all drown. Chilly. Figure 2. Fighting in Caves. What else is new... but Zheng looks good!

I finished my whirlwind surprise play of the Assassin's Creed, so I am back on the scheduled run of the Jade Empire. With a sad RIP to Master Li's VA. My first impression after logging in was: OMG, graphics... ouch, so terrible after the AC's slick artwork. But then I got my own Demon!!! I tried really hard to stay on the Closed Fist path, and broke the Dam! But immediately got those points back once I was in the village. See, I really wanted to play a matchmaker ro Ai Ling, because I that quest, and I had no interest in seeing her fight and kill Lan over the Baker. So, I found her a better husband, like an Open Palm boy. Other than that, I ran into a few gems I forgot in the village, like the Beggar saying that "All I am today I owe to the Emperor!", banters with an insane Optimist Lushaing, and, of course, Minister Sheng Finally got a few more (hopefully) points for Closed Fist by killing the Kindly guy who could not save the orphans during the flood. Just need to deliver the head. And, speaking of cool encounters and beautiful Ladies, I suppose I impressed that one. She thinks Zheng has spirit!

Nice! Zheng went to investigate the Southern Forest, and I seem to recall the story a little bit. My eyes/mind reset to the graphics, so i was able to see the forest as beautiful with the mysterious ruins. Zheng did not go far until he had to fight. I actually was thinking the game was growing too easy and I should up the difficulty, but, well, no, not really. I suck in styles too much and drain my pool too fast and if it is not restored, ouch. But I coped through this segment by putting Wild Flower/pet demon in the healing mode. And, as I said I started remembering the story, so when the Shadow Fox, the Spirit of the Forest attacked the poor villager that just wanted to go get help, I knew something was iffy. So, Zheng have investigated the temple, and the Pilgrim's Rest Inn to discover that it was not as it seemed. What I did not remember was that it was that point in the game that I was getting two funniest join-able characters, Black Whirlwind (they do not make this type of character any longer, Orghen was the last, I suppose), and, of course, Henpecked Hu. OMG, the Drunken Master STYLE! And, yes, I had the memory, but I still feel delighted at how funny and tongue in cheek the dialogue in JE is: I ended up with going to heaven to find Shadow Fox... and that's it for now. But, wow, the cast is assembling!

Have been biding my time letting the nostalgia mature from my last playthrough before I start the game up again.
One thing I love about it is the opportunity to dive into traditional Chinese naming conventions to find a combination that invokes a suitable concept. My old Open Palm character using the Wu the Lotus Blossom avatar ended up as "Chun Huang", which as I understand it means something akin to "Phoenix of Spring" when using the feminine radical for Huang.
I'm planning on going through the game again as a classic arrogant kung fu genius guy subscribing to the Closed Fist philosophy - as I understand it rather than the way the game interprets it. Essentially the little bully in the Karate Kid films, only grown up without any humiliating defeats at the hands of some New York punk. Starting out with White Demon and later relying on Tempest and Storm Dragon as magic and support.
The only catch is that it will kind of raise some doubt as to why in the world Dawn Star would enjoy my company rather than Gao's. Simple fraternal favoritism, maybe? Gao just arrived at the school too late to get a foot in the door of the Bad Boy slot in her heart because I had already stolen it.

I passed up Jade Empire at the game store in favour of renting or buying something else quite a few times. Unfortunately, by the time I had any idea that it was considered a classic, it was notoriously difficult to get a working copy of.
I did try it for steam years ago, which turned out to be about 6 hours of troubleshooting to get it to work. I only made it as far as rescuing Dawnstar before the computer died (and save file along with it.) I never could bring myself to try reinstalling it again after how long it took to get it working the first time.
And then it turned out it was available as a download on XBL. I have no idea how long that's been true, but I saw it on sale for about $4 and that seemed like a pretty good opportunity to try it again.
I have to say, the graphics and gameplay hold up surprisingly well. Better than most of Bioware's other games, even from more recent eras.

Jade Empire was the reason Bioware nearly went bankrupt and the reason they sold their soul to the devil (EA)
